Deeper Review Analytics

Hello hello!

I’m currently at burn down stage after hitting Level 60, and I’ve been tracking my progress bi-weekly on Mastodon. While originally I was burning remaining items at the same rate as I learned them (roughly 10 items/day), lately I’ve slowed down to 3-4 items/day which threw all my original projections off the figurative review hill.

The hypothesis that I have is that I’ve a bunch of tougher items (for me) that are in an SRS loop: I review them to Master/Enlightened, and after some time make a mistake and they drop back to Apprentice. However, I’m unable to fully validate this since this information is not exposed in the UI.

Is “review loop” something that is known to happen to a lot of Level 60 learners? Would there be any chance we could get a widget that would highlight the size/items of this loop?

Thanks a lot for the amazing app!

Hello!

You can validate this information by checking the items section of wkstats.

Any item in levels lower than the one you are currently burning that is not gold (burned) probably falls in the category you described

Sounds very relatable, I’ve had this happen both on Wanikani and Bunpro. (Btw, I haven’t used Wanikani since before the dashboard overhaul)

You can tell by number if you keep an eye on the number in each category using the “item spread” widget. I was used to this view:

The more you progress, the more the load shifts to the right. The more items stuck in the review loop, the more it shifts to the left compared to your overall progress.

I can only speak for myself who went full pace, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s common with such a review loop. Learning is not linear, after all. Some words and kanji don’t stick as easily and end up as leeches caught in the loop. These need special attention (there are several strategies for this).

As for which items exactly, maybe you are already, but you could use the “recent mistakes” and “item list → critical items”. The list of items in those widgets might not be exhaustive, but it’s better than nothing.

Edit: There used to be scripts for noticing your leeches. I don’t think they’re functional anymore with the new dashboard updates. Leech table script

Edit2: Now that you mention it, wkstats has an overview of items by SRS stage.

I’ve been using wkstats for a long time, but never checked the “Config” button! This is pretty nice, thank you!

Update:

Oof, I’m looking at 「叱」and it doesn’t look great, haha:
