Dathmach's Study Log

Here I am, trying to study. Mostly going to be keeping this so that I have an extra thing to remind me to do WaniKani everyday, as well as reminder of what I’ve done so far when I eventually start stressing about the path ahead.

Have done:

Hiragana

Katakana

Genki (kinda)

Working on:

Reading (Help)

WaniKani

The occasionally Koki flashcard set

You got this! I think Genki is great starting point and it’s how I initially started as well! If you get through Genki I, I’d recommend looking into Bunpro as well!

I’ll consider it, although all I have in mind for now is Genki. After that I hope to struggle my way through reading, so that may give me all the grammar practice I need lol

Best of luck to you! If you ever need reading recommendations for different Japanese levels, Natively is a really good way to go :slightly_smiling_face:

Finished with most of my studying today.

That is I did both the hiragana and katakana quiz, which I plan to keep up with until I begin reading.

I also did my reviews and lessons today, which were around 50 in total I think.

Later, once I get home I’ll watch Andy’s Genki video for chapter 2.

Had some more down time at work than I thought, went ahead and read chapter 2 of Genki, still plan to watch the video later.

Finally back home and went through Andy’s video. It was late and I wanted to go to bed, but I’ve finished it. Now it’s finally time for sleep.

Day 7 of WaniKani completed, as well as my daily kana tests.

Workday has been pretty slow so far, so this may be another day where I do both the video and book of Genki.

Genki is all ready up, the Andy video is waiting for me once I get home. Hopefully it doesn’t take as long this time…

Took a long time again…

Finally managed to get home and watch the video though. Honestly, I’m learning so much more from the videos as compared to the book that I’m thinking of just dropping the book completely and just going off of Andy’s videos.

Lots of new words today! Or rather, lots of words that I’ve already learned but with different spellings and ways to say them. I was thinking about it before, but now I know for sure that I’m going to need to try talking to Japanese people at some point as part of my studies. I was going to do it just to make sure that I understand Japanese when people are talking and to develop the skill to reply quickly, but now I’ll have to add learning to make sure I’m talking with the correct way of saying it too.

Also I’ve fully decided to just watch Andy’s videos. My main goal with Genki is to learn enough grammar to plunge into reading anyhow.

Day 10 of WaniKani finished. I’ve still got an Andy video to watch when I get home and I have the feeling that it’s going to take me awhile to get there.

On another note, I heard that dreaming about the language you’re studying is supposed to be a sign that you’re comprehending it, but I’m not sure if the dream I had last night counts. In it, I was walking down a street when my tooth came out. I picked it up and noticed that there was a hiragana on it, か I believe. I tried to put the tooth back in my mouth, but wasn’t able to until I said the hiragana. More of my teeth fell out and the pattern continued until I had said all the hiragana and katakana. Then my teeth had the symbols of kanji on them. I could say a few of them, but most of them I didn’t know. Likely, they didn’t even exist outside the dream. Whenever I got one wrong it would turn black and then disintegrate in my hand. After I got enough wrong my teeth were all gone. Someone on the street said something to me, in English mind you and I tried to reply. When I was unable to they took a video of my attempts before uploading it to the internet, upon which I was made fun of world wide. Tbh, I think this dream is more of a ‘studying worries’ dream than any kind of sign that I’m learning a new language.

Took me so long to get home, but the Andy video is finally watched. Halfway through book 1 now… probably only retaining about half at best. Hopefully that’ll be enough.

Wanikani is done for the day, I had a whole bunch of new words, which I’m sure I’ve already forgotten most of them. Also, it’s getting confusing knowing which spelling I’m supposed to be using with my previous words.

On the bright side, I leveled up! I’m now level 2.

Andy is once again waiting for me once I get home.

Finished with Andy’s video. Would have watched it right away when I got home, but I had a kitty that needed to be pet first. I regret nothing.

Finished the Genki video, to be honest, I don’t think I understood most of it. I’ll keep going though because I want to have at least some understanding of grammar before I try to read.

Finished Wankani for the day! I’ve of course got more Andy once I get home. How much I’m actually learning at this point is debatable, but I think that the only way to make it stick at this point is through reading. I still plan to finish out his videos on both books before that though. Also it seems I got a trust level up thing?
