Created an App to Review Specific Burned Items I'm Worried About Forgetting

:warning: This is a third-party app and is not created by the WaniKani team. By using this, you understand that it can stop working at any time or be discontinued indefinitely.

Burning an item doesn’t mean I’ll remember it forever. I kept running into burned vocab I’d half forgotten, but resurrecting felt like overkill since it throws the item back into WaniKani’s full SRS. As WaniKani’s Extra Study feature randomly shuffles through all burned items, I built a small app that enables lightweight review of only the burned items you want to spend extra time on.

Here it is → WaniKani Burned Items Review

How it works

You pick the burned items you want to keep practicing by adding a tag (by default 復習, but it can be customized) anywhere in the item’s reading note on WaniKani. The app finds every burned kanji and vocab item with that tag and quizzes you on them.

  • Reading and meaning prompts, with romaji turning into kana as you type, like WaniKani
  • Answer checking modelled on WaniKani: accepted and blocked answers, your synonyms, typo tolerance, and a shake instead of a wrong mark when you type the reading on a meaning prompt
  • Backspace wipes an answer so you can retry, like the DoubleCheck script
  • Items you miss come back more often; pass an item on 5 different days and it “graduates” (the number of days is configurable)
  • Graduated items can have the tag removed from your reading note for you, so they drop out of the list
  • Vocab shows WaniKani’s context sentences and explanations after you answer

User Interface

The dashboard shows how many of your items sit at each streak, so you can see your progress toward graduation at a glance. Below you’ll find everything you’ve tagged, sortable by streak, level, meaning and more:

Item pages are laid out like WaniKani’s:

When reviewing, a correct answer only shows the related reading or meaning information, while a wrong answer shows everything about the item:

There’s also a short guide built in for first-time users:

Trying it out

Open WaniKani Burned Items Review and paste in your WaniKani personal access token. A read-only token is enough for reviewing. Tick study_materials:update if you want the app to remove tags for you.

Privacy

There’s no server. The app runs in your browser and talks directly to the WaniKani API. Your token and review history stay in your browser’s local storage, and you can export your history to a file from Settings.

Things to know

  • Radicals aren’t included, only kanji and vocabulary
  • It’s an early version, built for desktop browsers
  • Your review history lives in the browser you use, so export it now and then

Feedback I’m after

  • Anything you’d want it to do that it doesn’t?
  • Is there interest in having me host the app on a server so that review history is maintained across browsers? (ex. so you can login across different computers)

Bugs and ideas are welcome here or as issues on GitHub. Thanks for taking a look!
