So wanikani teaches you that the reading is たい / だい, meaning substitution (as well as a few alternate meanings). However according to jisho this particular reading doesn’t mean substitution. I realized this when this kanji and reading came up on my bunpro reviews and I got it wrong when I guessed substitution. Is it correct that the reading たい / だい does not mean substitution in regards to this kanji? I’m trying to figure out the discrepancy so I’m not learning the wrong thing.
Learning the kanji as substitution is fine. You’re gonna have to learn other meanings no matter what you learn as the main one.
The first meaning on jisho is “substitute”. Considering how it’s used in so many words in Japanese, the English part of speech is not that important.
