There’s a recurring phrase used a lot in the Revue Starlight media franchise that’s as follows:
「お待ちなさいあなたの望んだその星を」
The anime adaptation provides a translation of “And it shall be bestowed upon you, the star you have longed for—”
I’m having trouble understanding this translation; I thought なさい was a structure used for polite commands and the overall structure is a little confusing; how does this sentence come together? Any clarification is appreciated.
In my opinion it does mean: “Please wait for (お待ちなさい) that star (その星を) that is your wish (あなたの望んだ)” and the official translation just took the liberty to localize it slightly differently. But I may be wrong.
Is there any particular significance of the humble お- prepended to 待ち? I haven’t seen it paired with a verb before, but that might just be a lack of reading experience.
Just noticed a meaningful mistake in my transcription — お待ちなさい should be お持ちなさい — i imagine this would render it more as “Please grasp the star you desired?” This seems to make more sense, but I’m not certain.
It makes the verb (and request) more polite.
