Oh, indeed a differen edition
It has furigana on most kanji, but stuff like 日本人, 町, 目, doesn’t come with it. So like 2nd or 3rd grade kanji maybe?
In any case, if this gets chosen we should make sure to mention the different editions.

Thanks @Chimmsen @yukitanuki for looking into it. I have a printed copy and when I checked it seemed to be pretty furigana’d. I didn’t even think to check the ebook editions (assumed they’d be the same).
Nominations are about halfway filled, so if anyone who’s already nominated something wants to add another I think it’d be a good time!
Is there a deadline? I have one more book in mind if we don’t get more nominations.
No hard deadlines, but I want to have a vote within the next couple of weeks, then we can start the new book in mid october (after the last book in the Natively club finishes)
Go ahead and nominate your other book! I have a couple more I can add too.

帰命寺はお参りすると死んだ人が帰ってこられるふしぎなお寺。小学5年生のカズは、帰命寺のなぞや昔の町や自分の家のことをいろいろ調べていきます。主人公の少年とよみがえった同級生の女の子がどうなっていくのか気になり、本の中で別の物語が展開されていたりするので、読み応えのある本だと思いました。

From a review:
Kimei-ji Temple is a mysterious temple where dead people can come back to life when they visit. Kazu, a fifth grader, investigates the mysteries of the temple, the old town, and his own home. I was curious about what would happen to the main character, a boy, and his revived classmate, a girl, and thought the book was worth reading because there are other stories unfolding in the book.
Death?
Reason(s) for nominating:
Hi hi. Soggy what sort of pace do you think we’d be reading at for this club? I might experiment a bit before it starts to see how comfortable it would be for me to keep up.
Hey! We would probably start around 10 pages per week. If you want to start getting comfortable, you could try 1 page per day (7/week) for a couple of weeks.

Reason(s) for nominating: Another spooky nomination! I liked the art style of the cover and illustrations on this one… What can I say, I’m shallow ![]()
Ok, based on the schedule for the book being read in the Natively club, I’ve set the start date for the first book in this club as October 11th.
It’s about time to get voting, so get any remaining nominations in by 2025-09-06T05:00:00Z ! After that I will set up the poll.
Calling all voters, children’s book enthusiasts, and poll-clickers! ![]()
It’s time to vote for the inaugural Children’s Novel Club pick! You will have
unlimited
votes, so please vote for everything you want to read, and we’ll see what happens.
Voting will be open until 2025-09-15T05:00:00Z
My nomination isn’t quite a front runner but it is getting more votes than I expected. It’s probably lvl 22-24 on natively if/when it gets more input. I picked 20 when I first added it because it seemed easier than some others I’d tried but that may be underselling it. The book is willing to use kanji for words so it’s aimed at 5th and 6th graders I think. the big hidden difficulty is Chinatsu being 2才 uses baby talk. For example, すごい becomes ちゅごい. I think s and t sounds are hard for her from what I remember. The older kids usually translate what she’s trying to say but I just wanted to put out a fair warning in case this was getting voted for being easier. It’s not too hard but it’s a little above what’s listed.
There’s a lot on this list I hadn’t heard of before. I voted for 5/12 of them.
UNLIMITED VOTES:high_voltage: means I could vote for everything, but where’s the fun in that? Something’s got to win.
I blame @TobiasW for the unlimited votes idea
If we don’t like it we can do limited votes in the future, but it’s kind of fun to see what people do!
I stopped reading the current book on natively because of some private problems, but I hope I will be able to read the next book.
We would love to have you back whenever you’re ready! ![]()
I have no problem being blamed for good ideas ![]()
People should be able to vote for everything that they would happily participate in, and it creates zero problems for those that want to use less votes.
(And even if you vote for everything, something will win!)
Please be careful with those Back to the Future spoilers!
