Can't recognize the second kanji

Hello everyone,

It shouldn’t bother me that much, but it actually is, does anyone can tell me what the second kanji (if it one) is ? I’ve tried looking by radicals, by redrawing it on multiple websites… and I can’t figure it out.

Merci !

Could it be Chinese? I can’t find that kanji by radical in my Japanese dictionary.

Looks like 蕉 to me, the kanji for “banana”

As it is a banana pencil case, that might be the case… indeed

The thing in the middle is just 隹. It just happens to be written differently in some fonts.

Wh… why do both of the kanji in the given name of famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho (松尾芭蕉) mean “banana”? Wait, the whole name means “banana”. Why’s a famous haiku poet named Banana?

I’ve been meaning to ask Yoshimoto Banana the same question.

His students planted a banana tree outside his house and he enjoyed it a lot and changed his name to Basho.
