Maybe something that explains to children how railways work, or about the history of railways in Japan?
I browsed through the children’s literature shelves of a Jukudo store, but couldn’t find anything appealing.
I’m not ready to read big chunks of text yet, but illustrations and infographics make text more fun and easier to read.
Have you tried Googling something like “鉄道 絵本”?
Or even “Japanese children’s train books” or “children’s train books in Japanese”. Either of those seemed to return info on a lot such books. Of the few results I looked at they seemed to be aimed at very young children (i.e. of the “Baby’s first picture book” sort) which may not be what you are looking for.
Another good search prompt is
一冊でわかる
The books with titles like this vary in difficulty level, but there seem to be some pretty good ones about trains and railways.
There’s also わかりやすい, and in particular the series いちばんわかりやすい, but I’m not sure if there are any good books about railways there.
I used this prompt and this book looks great:
These are all great suggestions, and they gave me inspiration to try another prompt: 鉄道図解, which yielded very nice results, mostly for grown-ups, but that’s also okay.
