First update @Warrie :
I have just downloaded smouldering Durtles, and every time I try to open it I get a Google account request screen. I don’t have one and no plans to have one. Is there no possible way to open and use the app without a Google account? Sorry for any disturbances and thank you in advance!
Ok, now you’re making me shy No worries, I can imagine comments like those can get into your head. Thankfully 99% of the people here are superhelpfull
If you need free apps then definately check out the Yomitan/Anki/Texthooker setup. It took me half an hour or so to setup, but the result is awesome. With that you can read a text (website, epub, visual novel and whatnot), if you don’t know a word you hover over it and a dictionary pops up, and even better - with one click you add that word to your anki deck if you want to memorize it.
Migaku does the same but is simply more userfriendly. Personally I just can’t get along with Anki, despite the amount of tutorials I read. Simply too many options for my liking and every guide advices different SRS settings. Migaku has it’s own SRS built in so I don’t use Anki at all.
About the Tae Kim app - I took another look and noticed I do have it installed on my Android phone. But apparently it’s removed from the Play store. This is the site of the dev, at the bottom you see the links for both the Apple and Android app but the links don’t work anymore.
The Obenkyo app which jhgoforth mentions offers the same material though.
I actually still use Flaming Durtles. For what I understood that one is not maintained anymore so Smouldering Turtles is better, but since I only use the app to look up Kanji I never bothered in replacing it with Smouldering. For FD I only had to enter an API key from WK, no login.
So I’m not sure if you can use SD without a Google account if it’s asking for one… hopefully someone else here can help you with that.
Warrie… (You aren’t obliged to say yeah) Do you happen to be interested to be a friend of mine? I have never cared about having friends, but… Your traits are rare to find in life. In addition, we seemingly share a couple of interests and hobbies. I mean, we both love anime, japanese and Japan. There could be more and I don’t know. You are wise and intelligent, too. Again, you aren’t obliged to say yeah. Actually I have been wanting to ask about that since the very beginning, which is tooooooooo rare or rather it even never happened that I felt this interested (or any interested) in making friends with someone. I honestly still find it weird, though… Anyway, feel free to answer the way you want and find comfortable…
“yeah” That’s supercool to hear. And I think it’s really motivating to study with someone else. If you install HelloTalk we could chat in private there. You’re still anonymous then so you don’t have to worry about that. At the bottom you see ‘HelloTalk’ on the left, which opens the chat window. There, topright click on the ‘person with + sign’ icon. ‘Add partner’ , click ‘search’ at the top and there you can enter my username
I’ll, but I have to wait until the 4th of this month so that I can get a new mobile data bundle. I live in GERMANY, and I still have to rely on limited mobile data plans as there are no unlimited ones in GERMANY . I also have Signal. If you have it or can easily get it without worrying about your mobile data like me, it will make the mission much much easier. I can give you my username then we can talk and study freely in private. I have just checked Hellotalk out, and it’s almost 300MB. I only have around 1GB remaining.
Oh my, that’s not handy, being so limited by bandwidth! You don’t have wifi at home?
I don’t know the signal app. I can install it but I’d prefer Hellotalk or whatsapp, trying to avoid too many messenger apps on my phone Would whatsapp work for you?
I don’t have WiFi at home, unfortunately. Of course WhatsApp works for me.
Great! Expect I just realized you need my phone number to add me and obviously I don’t post that on a forum I’ll install Signal then
That’s exactly what came on my mind… No sane person (including us) would post their phone number on any forums or communities.
However, if you aren’t comfortable with installing Signal, then please wait for me until I get the new bundle on the 4th so that I can I install Hellotalk. Feel free to go with what suits your interests and preferences. I surely don’t want to start our communication with a disturbance.
That app looks really cool! I didn’t know about this one so just checked some reviews on Reddit and they’re really positive. It only has a couple of free lessons though, then you have to pay to unlock the rest.
Give Renshuu.org a shot. They are the swiss army knife of Japanese learning and I can’t recommend it enough.
