I just noticed in the Extra Study section, there is a “Burned Items” link, and looks like it allows you to practice just specifically burned items. I don’t see anything about if there is spaced repetition for these and if so how often they reappear for practice. Does anyone know about this?
Since I had never noticed this before I have over 2,000 burned items in here that it will let me practice and I am finding that there are a LOT that I don’t fully remember - which means the burned items aren’t really burned into my memory the way WaniKani thinks they should be. I’m also wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Seems like the “spaced repetition” is actually a little TOO spaced for me and I’m not remembering a lot of these months later - maybe I’m just dumb though. Curious if there might be something in the api allowing me to review these burned items more often without having to un-burn them and add them all back into my regular reviews. I think it would be great if I could just go in and retest on burned items whenever I feel like it to keep them fresh instead of relying on WaniKani’s SRS since they seem to think I’ll remember stuff better than I actually do. Thanks!
Thanks for the suggestion - I’ve learned a few other Germanic/latin-based languages and found with those that doing a TON of reading was the way to go, and it was easy to sound things out and figure it out as you go. But so far I’ve found it is MUCH more difficult to make any progress in reading Japanese, and very difficult to find sufficient volume of reading material at just the right level. I’ll keep going at it, but was just hoping there might be a way to review the burned kanji a bit more without un-burning it, which I don’t want to do.
If you really worry about these you can add the ones you forget to an anki deck and that doesn’t cut off at 4 months. WaniKani chose that as a compromise so there’s not another dozen levels of srs for each item, but 4 months is just long enough that some items will burn and then be forgotten because you don’t see them that often. Reading native stuff is its own kind of reinforcement learning because some words and kanji will show up more than others. It’s worth reading some but it can be hard to get started. Don’t wait until level 60 to do it though.
But there’s not a good option within WaniKani for what you’re looking for.
Thanks for the info, but I still have the question, do you or anyone else know - it looks like it is letting me review my burned items so is there some interval that it revives these burned items to review them again? I wasn’t able to find anything about this.
It’s an interesting question and I’ve not seen it answered. I’m guessing they are just in a pile in the order burned and the optional review just pulls them out in that order (ie, no interval since it’s not scheduled). Maybe reach out to WK’s support email and let us know what they say!
I recently finished reviewing my burned items from the extra study widget, as far as I understand it just shows them randomly and when you complete them all it just starts again. So there is no SRS, hope this answers your question!
I am in pretty much the same situation. I have many burned items which i should review. Also its hard to find level 25 reading material thats kanji, engaging and easy enough. At least easier than the weird example phrases that go along with the vocab.
Anyway. My feature request would be. Separate SRS for burned items and the option to downgrad individual items to ‘enlighted’
