Still doing WaniKani. I haven’t done as many lessons this week as I’ve been having a bit of trouble with reviews lately. I think I’ll spend a few more days on them before doing any more new items.

BunPro is also going (very) slow, but steady.
And… That’s it. Not much else going on in my life. Work is exhausting, but acceptable. My social life is ok.
Oh. And I’m saving to get myself a Steam Deck for my birthday this April. Hope I can do it

Something amazing happened!
I mean, for some people, it won’t be that amazing, but for me it was!
I was just minding my own business in class, doing my job (I work in a school). Then suddenly another teacher opens the door and says, “Hey miss, is it ok if we can come in? We’ve got some visitors from Japan.”
And at first, not everything really got in my brain. I just heard, “[…] we can come in?” and I automatically nodded and was like, “Yeah! ‘Course!”
Then my brain processed the rest of the sentence. And in my mind I was like, ‘hold up, whaaaaat’
So in the 3 seconds it took for the entire group to enter the room, I was surprised, frozen, but also really excited?
The city I am in is not very ‘multicultural’. Like, yeah, we have foreigners, but nothing like, say, London, or Newcastle, or Leeds, or Manchester. I honestly struggle to find other Italians and continental Europeans, let alone people from Japan.
So anyways, I was excited and marvelling at the strike of fate. I thought to myself, “Brave, you HAVE to take this opportunity to get some practice in!!”
I was… Holy heck, I was nervous. And honestly scared to embarrass myself. But anyways, I mustered up some courage and tried my hand at saying something.
This is not one of those situations where we ended up talking about deep philosophical topics, or analysed ancient literature like The Tale of Genji. I simply do not have the ability.
But I managed to confidently say things like, “日本語ですか？”, “こんにちは!”, “少しだけ…”, “ありがとうございます！”
I know. These are, like, the basics of all basics. It’s not that impressive. But, again, I’ve never practiced talking in Japanese before (all these 5 years I’ve just been doing reading/writing and a little listening). So, I was actually pretty damn proud of myself to even manage that…
One of the students also was like, “Miss, what?? You know Japanese?? That’s so impressive!” And I had to laugh it off half-embarrassingly because, no my child, knowing only this much after 5 years is NOT impressive 
But obviously I didn’t say that out loud.
Anyways. Been feeling giddy since then, and it’s now been 3 hours. Hahaha, I know it probably sounds lame to some of the users here which have such a high level of the language, but I’m gonna bask in this little slice of glory 
PS: aaaaaaaand also, it’s happened again. I said “日本語ですか？” when instead I meant to ask, “日本人ですか？”
I don’t know why this keeps happening to me. It’s the second time I’ve now done this. First time being at a Japanese restaurant. But thankfully it still worked out because I asked that after I heard two people from the visitor group speaking to each other, so at least it still matched the situation…
Wow, what an unexpected but amazing surprise!
It’s really neat that you got the opportunity to practice speaking Japanese in the wild, and you should be proud of taking it! Especially as unprepared and caught of guard as you were. I wouldn’t worry about that little hiccup, considering. 
I’m also outside any of the major cities in the UK so I’d be pretty baffled if I bumped into Japanese people around me lol.

It is, there’s a LOT more foreigners there from what I’ve seen in my visits. Especially more east asians than what we have here

I also love how folklore have such big things happening very quickly and with no run-up to the occasion. It’s just, “Oh, hello stranger! You are now my son-in-law! You’re gonna live with us from now on!”
