I just realized that the planets are also named after the “elements”: Mercury 水星, Venus 金星, Mars 火星, Jupiter 木星 and Saturn 土星. Guess because these are the ones visible with the naked eye… Uranus and Neptune are a bit off, 天王星 and 海王星 (heavenly-king star and sea-king star, that’s obviously just adopted Greco-Roman mythology).
BTW, Jupiter as the wooden star, aaawww that’s just cute. But why not, it kind of looks like it is made of wood.

What do you mean “element”. Chemical Elements? Bcz those are based on Greek and Roman God, so Planets are actually named after Greek and Roman Gods.

Not the chemical elements from the Periodic Table, but more of the Chinese folk-lore stuff: Water, Metal, Fire, Earth and Wood. Whatever, it was a cool realization for me to discover that I suddenly knew the names of the main planets in the Solar System in Japanese. And could write them in Kanji too!

I just started watching My Hero Academia, and lancer-rival-bomberman’s name is
Bakugo (爆豪)
whose kanji literally translate into “flashy explosion”

火花 (ひばな) Spark. fire flower: Plants use flowers to reproduce and spread. Sparks from fires make the fire spread.
It’s a cool analogy.
電話 (でんわ) Phone. electricity talk. Brilliant. Does what it says on the tin.
The way 必 (ひつ) certain is 心 (しん) heart with a line through it. We can do a lot of things we’re certain about without feeling anything.
北海道 (ほっかいどう) North sea way/road. Pretty succint explanation of Hokkaido.
I just love the inherent logic of it all. Simple and profound at the same time.

I get what you’re saying, but as a teacher, unfortunately, the times when you try to shake a student and tell him, “Look at this! This is amazing!” is often the times when they’re whatevs. Sometimes you gotta discover the little amazing moments yourself to really appreciate them.

As a German speaker I can confirm that alter means ‘an old person’
i remember watching Naruto and there was this guy named gekko who in one way or another was related to reptiles. Anyway i remember thinking “Is there really a Japanese name called gekko.” Anyway i didn’t realize that a couple of levels ago i remember taking a kanji that i never thought would ever come up, now after reading how the guy’s name was written it was 月光。
This blew my mind because not only dis i think there was no way there could be a kanji for gekko, but because i never thought i’d ever come across this kanji. (I haven’t encountered it at all since that day tho 
)
