Beyond Sleepy’s (pillow fort?) study log

I hope that your studies are going well, Sleepy-san!! Good luck on exams

Thank you for checking in Shannon-8さん  I feel like my exams went well enough, grade-wise so far I’ve gotten an A, a B, and a C, in that order so I guess the remaing grade should be a D?

My jp studies are going well as well, I’m studying hard and I’m working hard so at the end of the day I haven’t been finding the time to really write any updates to my study log even though I’ve been meaning to:p In fact I was aiming to write an update yesterday, then I postponed it to today, but I still have a lot to do (gardening and housework at my mom’s ) so instead I’ll see if I can find the time tomorrow :upside_down_face:

I guess I’ll write up a small status update while I’m here tho:)

Currently I am and will be working full time until the start of the autumn semester, so on workdays between work and three SRSs (WK, anki, and Bunpro), + listening and a small bit of reading, I don’t really have time for any other projects. So anything else is relegated to days off from work, after I’ve studied jp for a few hours. But my work isn’t mentally draining so it feels sort of sustainable even though I’m not finding as much time for a lot of things as I would like (jp related and not).

I restarted Bunpro a couple weeks ago after my last exam, so now I’m almost halfway through N5 again. I’ll probably level up here on WK on monday for a 8 day level which is a fun pace but probably won’t be as fun when the enlightened and burn reviews start showing up during the school year

ah, and I got my first :fire: burns :fire: a couple days ago :confetti_ball: :cake: :confetti_ball:

Honestly, I can’t do anything more than work and Wanikani SRS (I can barely do my work LoL)… So you’re absolutely forgiven for slacking on posting! XD

I’m very impressed with everything you are accomplishing! Congratulations on your “burns”!

Oh! and congratulations on your grades. Your last one will NOT be a D!!

Heheh- so I thought I would have more time for the forums during summer. I honestly thought I’d be updating my study log on a close to daily basis starting June 10th but here I am in July with my first real update of the summer.

I wanted to at least finish volume 1 of よつはと! before the Summer read every day challenge, but I didn’t get around to it until today:

よつばと!vol1, cha6-7, pp181-224 🍀

It cleared up!!

The transcription process takes a decent amount of time and energy, so beginning with vol. 2 I’m planning to start off by transcribing a bunch of pages without translating anything so that my reading/translation attempt aren’t continually interrupted by having to transcribe the text. And I’ll be doing the transcription/translation directly in a post here and just quote the most recent translations in my updates.

Ah- I don’t actually have any more time to write this update (I was suddenly asked to take a night shift and somehow ended up saying yes, so I gotta get some sleep)- just gonna shoot off a quick question while I’m here: What’s a good approach to learn the distinction between る-verbs and う-verbs ending in る? This has been causing me some trouble in Bunpro lately.

Bear with the romaji, I’m on a phone and lazy about keyboard swapping.

If you don’t already know this, all ichidan (ru) verbs end specifically in iru or eru, so that narrows it down a lot. There are godans (u) ending in those sounds occasionally though. Here is a seemingly thorough list of those “exceptions”.

Thank you  I have definitely known this but when I suddenly started struggling a couple days ago the knowledge was gone :upside_down_face:

Btw, I think you mentioned a Japanese re-stream of SGDQ? Do you know if/where they release the VODs? For the first time in quite a few years I didn’t dedicate my free time this week to GDQ, instead prioritizing Japanese, so being able to combine the two while catching up in all the runs I missed would be amazing

Went out looking, and I got you covered

Over time, you’ll intuitively recognize many verbs as being one or the other. This is another thing I file under the category of pattern recognition, where you unconsciously recognize patterns you’ve seen over and over again.

Even the いる/える tip is something that you would likely intuitively notice eventually if you were unaware of it in advance. (But having shortcuts never hurts, so long as you disregard the ones that aren’t helping you out yet.)

I feel I’m in a bit of a slump now:/ 3 SRSs proved too much so I dropped Anki a week or so ago, at the same time I’ve allowed myself to indulge in bingereading a couple pieces of fanfiction (something I haven’t done in over a year) at the expence of reading and listening to Japanese. That felt good and like I needed it, so now I’m wondering what this ought to mean for my studying going forward. I’m determined to keep up my pace at WK and Bunpro but my intensive reading/translation ambitions might have to be put on ice. If I’m to read at all it should probably be a more relaxed form of reading for a while… That unfortunately probably means I won’t be attempting to participate in the VN reading club :infinity: or updating this log as often as I’ve been meaning to for a while:/

Well, apart from WK and Bunpro I think I’m just going to dedicate the rest of my free time this week to playing some video games and watching some youtube, then I’ll reevaluate my approach to Japanese on Sunday/Monday. My current feelings might be tied to me getting a surprise night shift at work last Sunday, as well as getting a painful, bleeing inflamation in part of my gums around a molar on the same day. The constant ache from that the last four days is probably contributing to my lower levels of motivation and otherwise just coloring my outlook on things. Mad respect for @Daisoujou’s ability to keep up intensive studying in spite of health problems, btw. Hopefully I have an approach to studying I can feel good about next week, I’ll update my log again then:)

Yeah I feel you, I’ve had those moments. 3 SRS sounding unreasonable to me was exactly why I didn’t use bunpro even though I liked the idea. As long as you don’t ever totally drop maintenance of stuff if you can help it, I think you’ll be fine. I’d encourage maybe using it as much as you need then thinking about rotating back to Anki if you don’t despise SRS in general by then? At this point I force a little grammar as I come across it in Anki anyway, but my experience was you begin with grammar as a monster, but over time you just need to learn 10s of thousands of words and you can’t help but know the grammar at a stage that’s still early enough. Anyway, seeing how you seem to still be moving forward even, no worries. Though we’ll miss you in the club. Can always pick it up later, if you feel the desire.

Taking some time for videogames did wonders for me, so I hope chilling for a bit is good for you too. Though some days now my hand (which I think is pain radiating from the shoulder) hurts too bad to use the mouse much for PC games… I’m hoping it’s some stubborn tendonitis that’ll go away? :person_shrugging: I hope you recover soon too, sounds awful :crossed_fingers:. Honestly the trick to my success here while constantly managing my body is that I’m lucky enough to be able to largely retreat from a lot of other responsibilities, and people still remaining properly real-world functional is what amazes me at this point, heh.

I’ve decided to at least get started on N3 stuff on Bunpro before considering returning to Anki. I can probably make that happen in a matter of months so I’ll reconsider then. As for reading I think I’ll benefit the most from seeing basic grammar a bunch of times hence I’ll be going for quantity of input over quality of understanding from now on. The close reading/translation served the purpose of introducing me to a lot of grammar in a way that my brain could hold on to much better than when trying to memorize grammar concepts in the context of the typical boring, forgettable example sentences most textbooks operate with, but now that my brain has more context to work from I feel that textbook grammar-explanations have become easier to grasp by themselves; hence “study grammar and read a lot” seems like the way to go at the moment.

Right now I don’t feel motivated by the thought of tracking anything in particular so I might not have anything to post for a while. I think I’ll read the next couple volumes of Yotsuba far faster than the first and I’ll probably want to say something about the experience in the log in order to have something to look back on and measure my growth against:)

How my break played out

My dental health problem went away after a week, and I had a good time playing Transistor

on Sunday without worrying about productivity at all. I meant to play for a couple of hours at first and when I noticed the time it had been like 7 hours:p My guesstimate is I’m 85-95% done after two sessions and I really enjoyed the gameplay, soundtrack, and visual aesthetics but I’m getting back into the Japanese grind again so I’m having trouble finding the motivation to finish the game now  I guess that’s a good problem all things considered, but if I wait too long to play the rest of the game then I’ll be facing the hardest parts having forgotten the skill sets the rest of the game spent hours drilling me on:/

I think I’ll at least buy the game and see how it goes over the first week:)

I still find your progress impressive, you’re a source of motivation to me :muscle: Maintaining real-world functionality is a top-level priority for me and definitely isn’t as easy as it’s often portrayed. Living in Norway definitely helps though, I think the US would break me with debt and healthcare bills :person_shrugging:

I feel it…
I only do WaniKani and reading and looking up grammar, and don’t do Anki or bunpro (or other) these days with DuoLingo… it’s already too much to do…

Good luck with it…

you gotta have fun, no matter what

So … it’s been over a month since I last updated my study log. I’ve been taking it easy when it comes to Japanese, I haven’t been doing WK lessons for the past 4-5 weeks but I’ve progressed a bit on Bunpro

There’s an explanation for that

Basically I had three days between my last exam and starting my full time job for the summer, and then three days between my last shift and the start of the new semester (the 15th of August) so I pretty much haven’t had a break at all. I’ve also been visiting my parents all summer, mostly my mom though. She’s living with and taking care of my sister whose mental illness makes life really challenging for the both of them to the point where mom says it’s ruining her mental health as well and she hasn’t had the energy to keep her house in order for years (my sister spends all day at home, doing whatever, doesn’t clean up after herself and either ignores you or starts to cry if you demand that she does even small things like putting her dirty dishes in the dishwasher or cleaning crumbs off the table where she’s eaten…). In any case, the house was and is a mess and I decided to spend the summer cleaning the house and doing some gardening for her (I estimate I did about a third of everything that should be done in the end). Between work, housework, and going at a ~8day pace at WK while doing other forms of JP studying I didn’t have any time for anything else. I didn’t even see my dad for more than like a couple of days in a 5 week period, which is how long I kept that up before I “crashed” although it was more like a bodily sensation that something was about to give if I didn’t change things up, followed by a gradual paring down of my Japanese studies until all I was doing was my reviews on WK and Bunpro for a few weeks.

I feel pretty bad @ekg for how flaky I’ve been with the SamCham watching club, I did mean to/think I would keep up with that every time I said I would but I’ve also been strict with myself about not forcing myself to do anything in or related to JP (besides reviews) so as not to burn out and that’s ended up with me not doing anything at all lately :person_shrugging:

Anyway, I came home from summer “break” and started the new semester at uni a week ago and I’ve been getting back into more actively studying Japanese again. I’ve been doing new lessons on Bunpro for a week already, and I did 10 WK lessons today:) I’ll be participating in the Absolute Beginner Book Club’s reading of Hunter x Hunter and received my copy yesterday:

along with all of 火の鳥 to fix the shipping costs to product cost ratio:p It’s on my to-read list but doesn’t have enough furigana for me to attempt reading at my current level. HxH is one of my favorite anime though so I think the book club will be fun

I also hope to get back into actively participating on the forums (I’ve been lurking) but I’m just feeling things out now so we’ll see :upside_down_face:

Don’t feel bad. Putting your own mental health first is more important! I’m not finished either!

Oh that all sounds exhausting. Don’t have much to add but we sure do all have our own circumstances to balance learning with. Just don’t leave us entirely if your life permits it and I’m sure you’ll learn it well in the end.

:heart_eyes_cat: :heart_eyes_cat: :heart_eyes_cat: this is an amazing choice. obviously, I am pointing out the obvious… but still…^^

I’d like to second that. There is a time and place for everything. And taking care of the people who you love and that need your support is absolutely amazing.

Sometimes it needs you to take a step back. And sometimes this may feel like you have missed out onto something. But at the same time (and this is only my humble observation) you gave something to someone else in the very right moment. Which is irreplaceable. Something that is impossible to give at any other moment (in time or place).

I made a translation attempt of the week’s reading over at the ABBC. I struggled a bit with some parts :upside_down_face:

Going to try watching Komi Can’t Communicate now, I’ve been aware of the title for a long time but I only thought to watch it after they mentioned it on the latest episode of Drawfee. Somthing like “if other 30-year-olds enjoyed it then maybe I should give it a go…”

I’m running out to time, gotta go grab food, but just throwing out a couple quick things for easy ones I noticed in the minutes I had:

Seems right to me!

がかり is indeed like “taking a quantity of.” The でも functions kind of like “even if” (there are 5 large adults), they can’t lift them or whatever, I’m operating on no context. So your first translation seems correct!

Might want to recheck, seems highly like to be ずっと

I’ll try to remember to look more when I have time later if other people don’t cover it :slightly_smiling_face:
