BBC book club member & pace POLLs: Frieren
edition
Calling all members - Please participate in both polls if you joined Frieren for at least 1 week - whether or not you are still reading along with the club and whether or not you feel like you are the target audience for the club. We want to hear what you think about the pace of the club so far.
There have been discussions about the pace of the BBC club and whether we even know if it’s the right pace for the target audience. To unravel this, we need to have a better understanding of who is joining the clubs and what they think about the pace.
Why now
I’ve decided to start this at the halfway point because clubs tend to have a steep drop-off in the first several weeks, and it would be nice to capture as many people as possible who started the club. As the pace generally increases in the second half of the club, we can do a poll at the end as well if people think that is useful.
Other relevant polls I know of
気になってる人が男じゃなかった pace poll
Polled on the book club home thread 1 month after the club ended:
I used that poll as my template and made some changes to make it less wordy and more focused on approximate level of people joining, and how the target and edge of target audience finds the pace.
If enough people respond, then maybe we’ll learn something interesting about who typically joins this club. If that is obvious enough, then future polls could be simplified even more.
These polls are anonymous.
I split this into two polls even though that isn’t totally necessary. It’s just less cognitively demanding to make one choice at a time.
First - choose your club level
Description of levels
NOTE: these descriptions aren’t hard written “rules”, it’s just based on what I’ve read around the clubs and looking at recent picks. If you disagree let me know.
I added a non-club category called pre-intermediate as it has come up before - but since then the IMC has been created so it will be interesting if that is still relevant.
- ABBC (Absolute Beginner Club) - basic grammar (N5 / end of Genki 1), approx. Natively 14-22, typically a page a day pace or so (mostly manga)
- BBC (Beginner Book club) - Grammar - solid N5, at least some of N4, typically Natively 22-26, typically 1–>3 pages a day (mostly manga)
- Pre-Intermediate - only choose if you feel strongly that BBC is too easy and IMC is too hard for you.
- IMC (Intermediate Manga club) - new club targeting manga at Natively 27+ or “too hard for BBC”, likely 1-2 chapters a week
- IBC (Intermediate Book club) - typically Natively 27-31, targeting ~15 pages/week (prose) or 1-2+ chapters/week (manga)
- ABC (Advanced Book club) - typically Natively 32-40+, 30-50 pages/week for modern books, ~15 pages/week for literary/older books
This poll is anonymous
- ABBC
- BBC
- pre-intermediate - select ONLY if you strongly feel BBC is too slow for you and IMC/IBC is too fast/difficult

Second - Your thoughts on pace
This poll is anonymous
- (ABBC - absolute beginner) - too hard or too fast
- (ABBC - absolute beginner) - pace is ok for me
- (BBC target audience) - I dropped this manga - too hard or too fast
- (BBC target audience) I dropped this manga - personal reasons or no longer interested
- (BBC target audience) - I wish the pacing was slower
- (BBC target audience) - pace is perfect so far
- (BBC target audience) - I wish the pacing was faster
- (pre-intermediate reader) - pace feels too slow yet IMC or IBC pace is too fast
- (experienced reader IMC/IBC/ABC) - I joined at least one week so far
- None of the above
Thanks to all the experienced readers who join the club and read at a slower pace than they can - your presence is a big help to new club members!
Thanks
