Beginner Japanese Book Club // Now Reading: シャドーハウス

Aha, that was it!

Sock puppets.

Provided “something I want to read” is Yuru Camp. If not, ignore this post. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d probably add the fact that there’s a light amount of dialect to the cons list. Her cousin has a slight accent if I remember rightly. There’s a part where she speaks to her totally unintelligible uncle, but given that Makoto doesn’t understand a word he says it probably doesn’t matter if we don’t either :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t remember it being particularly easier than other things we’ve read  but it was the first manga I ever read and I don’t have it hand to compare right now.

I’d definitely be up for reading it again with the group - give me a slightly easier ride for once

I’m thinking about nominating my all-time favorite series: Skip Beat!
I don’t think it’ll stand any chance but I really want to read it in Japanese one day and it might be rather sooner than later if it’s a beginner’s club pick, so I can at least try and nominate it :slightly_smiling_face:

Also, I picked up the free volumes of ふらいんぐうぃっち because it was mentioned and nominated (well and if it wins, I don’t have to pay money then  )

I would definitely be down to read Skip Beat since it’s my favourite shoujo and I’ve been planning to read it in Japanese one day too

スキップ・ビート! (Skip Beat!)

Kyoko Mogami is a 16-year-old girl who discovers that her childhood friend and romantic goal, Sho Fuwa, only keeps her around to act as a maid and to earn his living expenses, while he works his way to become the top pop idol in Japan. Furious and heartbroken, she vows revenge by beating him in show business.

Amazon (Book & Kindle):

Personal Opinion

It’s one of the first mangas I’ve ever read and it’s only one of three series that I still follow up to this day. Needless to say, it’s one of my favorite managas and the best shoujo series for me (because it actually isn’t a typical shoujo story imo). It has many comedic elements but has its serious moments, too. The story and all characters are well developed.

Pros and Cons for the Book Club

  • Kanji with Furigana
  • Real-life story with comedic elements
  • Well written characters and character development (not particularly in the first volume, though )

  • It’s still ongoing and a long series with 43 volumes so far.
  • Started in 2002, so the art style is a bit old-fashioned in the beginning.

Fun fact that no one is interested in: I’ve been reading and following this series for way more than half of my lifetime :joy:

Whatever the pick turns out to be, am I correct in thinking that it would start October 19th (or later)? I ask for the purposes of planning an Amazon JP order.

For anyone located in the United States who’s interested, Amazon JP is currently running a promotion “Get a 1,000-yen coupon when you buy 3 books or more (until September 5, 2019)”

*During the promotion period, make a purchase that meets the minimum purchase requirement (3 books or more in a single order with the shipping address in the United States), apply the coupon code “US3BOOKS”, and receive a 1,000-yen coupon to your account automatically after one day of your order has been delivered.

Probably not “or later”. Usually there’s only a one week break between books.

@Radish8 The deal (even if only available to those in the U.S.) might be reason enough to make sure the polling is closed a couple days before September 5th.

I just thought I’d mention that there’s another coupon right now from Amazon Japan for free shipping to Hong Kong, Taiwan or South Korea if you buy 5 books for more than 2,300 yen. It’s listed on the same page as the one for the U.S.

Promotion Code: 5BOOKS
Minimum purchase requirement : 5 books or more, totaling over 2,300 JPY
Please note: To become eligible for this promotion, You must choose AmazonGlobal Standard Shipping as the shipping method and ship destination must be Hong Kong, Taiwan or South Korea. This offer does not apply if you choose Amazon Global Priority Shipping

First time I saw that one I didn’t see the fine print mentioning the location. Imagine my disappointment. :disappointed:

Oooh, okay. In that case I might bring the nomination deadline forward. Don’t think anyone else has mentioned desperately wanting to nominate something anyway.

Edit: looks like we will instead be opening voting on the 31st, and aiming to close the vote by the 3rd of September (the 4th at the latest).

And just to clarify, we will likely be starting the next pick on the 19th of October - @Mokumokuren

That coupon annoyed me because it said “free global shipping” but it applied to a whopping THREE countries.

I’m glad they finally gave the US something and hopefully they’ll eventually extend it to other regions. I would pay for Amazon Japan Prime in a heartbeat if it applied to orders shipped via Global Priority.

Back to the next pick… is Scary Stories considered nominated?

thank you for including so many purchase links :purple_heart:

Will this work for kindle books too?

Ohhhh Nominations time! Flying Witch and 聲の形 are nominated :OO thanks @morpheme and @seanblue.

I intended on reading those eventually, so I might be participating on the next book/manga chosen too :eyes: :eyes:

Please rate the nomination samples!

Voting will be opening on the 31st of August (the deadline for nominations has now passed), and usually stays open for 3 - 4 days.

Before the vote opens we need you to rate the difficulty of the sample pages included with each nomination (links in the OP).

As I said before, it’s most helpful if you can vote on a range of the nominations (if not all). If you just vote on the couple you’re most interested in, it won’t give us such a useful comparison of the difficulty with the other nominations.

Please also give me a ping if I’ve missed adding your nomination to the OP!

Having now read the first three volumes, I wouldn’t really even recommend it for book club. The first volume is too depressing to be read on its own.

Oh yeah, I forgot about this - I’m thinking we should remove it now? There have been a reasonable number of new nominations and they seem quite popular…

Does something go in the ‘removed’ list if it never even appears in a poll?

I’d probably remove it. I’m worried people will vote for it because of name recognition and then be disappointed/upset. I don’t really care what you do with it, but if you choose to move it to the removed list you can say that it was done at my request. Sorry @jprspereira.
