Beginner Japanese Book Club // Now Reading: ひらやすみ // Next: 骨ドラゴンの愛娘

I’m one of the dropouts for a combination of these two reasons.

I’m signed up for a ton of book clubs right now (enough that I’m having a hard time even keeping up with the ones I’m super excited about), and I just found that Frieren wasn’t that compelling for me. I tried watching the first anime episode to see if that inspired me to keep reading, but it did not.

I’m also not in the target group, so my reasons for dropping out probably aren’t that important anyway.

So I started reading this one ahead of time because I thought it looked amazing (and it does). The vocabulary is not the simplest but it is very low density indeed so far (I only finished the first chapter).

Frankly my main issue reading so far has been the weird fonts used outside of speech bubbles. This one, in particular:

(This isn’t meaningfully a spoiler but I still prefer to hide it if you don’t want to see anything before the club begins)

It took me about one minute to decode that but it is 汚染率 反応有 結晶体 and there’s more of that stuff elsewhere in the chapter. I wonder if the OCR program some of you use can deal with this?

I personally just ignored those. It’s very unlikely that any give you any useful information.

You’re correct, but you can’t know that before you translate!

I think this is hylian

Or maybe Klingon

When I first encountered this font I genuinely thought it was made up alien characters you weren’t meant to understand and then I recognized a couple kanji and went “oh no”.

Summary

Japanese from Amazon (not very detailed)

ゲーム好きな男の子、薫はネットゲームで知り合った男性と駅で待ち合わせ。女性キャラを使っていたせいで女の子だと勘違いされていることを心配する薫だが、待ち合わせ場所にやってきたのはかわいい女の子で……?

English from AniList (more detailed)

Kaoru Terasaki is a gamer who’s into MMORPGs, and he’s finally meeting up with someone he’s been friends with in-game for a long while—this time, offline and in person. He’s worried that his friend will be disappointed to see Kaoru is a guy, unlike his female character in the game. But he’s the one who’s in for a surprise when, instead of another guy, his friend turns out to be a cute girl, Nanami Ousaka. On top of that, Nanami told her parents that she would be bringing a friend over—a female friend. Even worse, Nanami’s dad is the super overprotective type who won’t allow any guys near his daughter. There’s only one solution to this dilemma: Kaoru has to cross-dress as a girl!

Personal Opinion

I started reading the series back in April and it quickly became one of my favorite manga series. I started reading it because at the time I was reading a lot of manga with crossdressing as an element. The series definitely has that aspect, but it’s also so much more than that. I really like the chemistry between the two main characters, and the full color art is a bonus.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Funny and cute romantic comedy
  • Full color art
  • Short chapters makes it easy to break into a schedule

Cons

  • Minimal furigana
  • Short chapters may encourage binge reading, which isn’t great for a book club

The week 1 of ウスズミの果て has begun:

Could someone change the title of this thread to reflect that?

We also need to update the table at the top of the first post (or just delete the table if we don’t plan to maintain it).

I’ll update it when on my desktop PC.

I’ve updated the top post. As well as reflecting the new current book, I’ve added links to offshoot clubs where they exist. It’s about a 60/40 split for the offshoot being in the same thread vs a different thread, so a lot of the time the offshoot links to the same place as the main thread, but I put it as an offshoot link for consistency.

I’ve also added seanblue’s latest nomination, which puts us at 17/20 nominations. I set the date for the next poll at August 10th, and so will probably post another reminder about open nomination slots August 1st if they’re not filled before then.

I really like the overall organisation and especially the table you’re keeping at the top, it makes it so easy to check in with the club, thank you!

Personal Opinion

I’m reading this one in English and I really like it. This isn’t quite like our resident “non-human in a human school” Ruri Dragon, but I’m catching lots of similar vibes from it - for example, different fantasy races and humans peacefully coexisting, and the whole atmosphere of the manga being mostly rather wholesome.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Slice-of-life + school setting…
  • …with a cool & cute werewolf girl!
  • Lots of other cool fantasy creature people.
  • It’s an ongoing series that’s just starting with two volumes out - so there’ll be more if you like it, but for now it won’t keep you busy for ages.

Cons

  • One chapter is a fair bit weaker than the others, and it’s the main reason why I felt the need to put a “mostly” before the “wholesome” in the Personal Opinion section.
