I’m one of the dropouts for a combination of these two reasons.
I’m signed up for a ton of book clubs right now (enough that I’m having a hard time even keeping up with the ones I’m super excited about), and I just found that Frieren wasn’t that compelling for me. I tried watching the first anime episode to see if that inspired me to keep reading, but it did not.
I’m also not in the target group, so my reasons for dropping out probably aren’t that important anyway.
So I started reading this one ahead of time because I thought it looked amazing (and it does). The vocabulary is not the simplest but it is very low density indeed so far (I only finished the first chapter).
Frankly my main issue reading so far has been the weird fonts used outside of speech bubbles. This one, in particular:
(This isn’t meaningfully a spoiler but I still prefer to hide it if you don’t want to see anything before the club begins)
It took me about one minute to decode that but it is 汚染率 反応有 結晶体 and there’s more of that stuff elsewhere in the chapter. I wonder if the OCR program some of you use can deal with this?
When I first encountered this font I genuinely thought it was made up alien characters you weren’t meant to understand and then I recognized a couple kanji and went “oh no”.
Kaoru Terasaki is a gamer who’s into MMORPGs, and he’s finally meeting up with someone he’s been friends with in-game for a long while—this time, offline and in person. He’s worried that his friend will be disappointed to see Kaoru is a guy, unlike his female character in the game. But he’s the one who’s in for a surprise when, instead of another guy, his friend turns out to be a cute girl, Nanami Ousaka. On top of that, Nanami told her parents that she would be bringing a friend over—a female friend. Even worse, Nanami’s dad is the super overprotective type who won’t allow any guys near his daughter. There’s only one solution to this dilemma: Kaoru has to cross-dress as a girl!
I started reading the series back in April and it quickly became one of my favorite manga series. I started reading it because at the time I was reading a lot of manga with crossdressing as an element. The series definitely has that aspect, but it’s also so much more than that. I really like the chemistry between the two main characters, and the full color art is a bonus.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Funny and cute romantic comedy
Full color art
Short chapters makes it easy to break into a schedule
Cons
Minimal furigana
Short chapters may encourage binge reading, which isn’t great for a book club
I’ve updated the top post. As well as reflecting the new current book, I’ve added links to offshoot clubs where they exist. It’s about a 60/40 split for the offshoot being in the same thread vs a different thread, so a lot of the time the offshoot links to the same place as the main thread, but I put it as an offshoot link for consistency.
I’ve also added seanblue’s latest nomination, which puts us at 17/20 nominations. I set the date for the next poll at August 10th, and so will probably post another reminder about open nomination slots August 1st if they’re not filled before then.
It’s august 1st - the next poll starts on the 10th, and there are three nomination slots open so of you have anything you want to nominate, now is the time.
I’m reading this one in English and I really like it. This isn’t quite like our resident “non-human in a human school” Ruri Dragon, but I’m catching lots of similar vibes from it - for example, different fantasy races and humans peacefully coexisting, and the whole atmosphere of the manga being mostly rather wholesome.
Pros and Cons
Pros
Slice-of-life + school setting…
…with a cool & cute werewolf girl!
Lots of other cool fantasy creature people.
It’s an ongoing series that’s just starting with two volumes out - so there’ll be more if you like it, but for now it won’t keep you busy for ages.
Cons
One chapter is a fair bit weaker than the others, and it’s the main reason why I felt the need to put a “mostly” before the “wholesome” in the Personal Opinion section.
