Update 8/7 - Alchemizer

New Feature: Alchemizer (combined lists)
The alchemizer is about turning garbage (frequency 1 words) into something useful. For those who don’t know, frequency 1 words make up about 50-60% of the unique words in a book. There’s so many of them and they’re mostly not worth learning because they don’t show up again. The alchemizer exists to help you pick out the few that will come up in other books you plan on reading.

Article describing exactly how you’d use it. Also I rewrote section three to be better.

Features:

Match books against books
Four different match criteria:
- Primary list (standard)
- Recurring Frequency 1 Words
- - Primary use: seeing how much words between books intersect
- Primary List + Recurring Frequency 1 Words
- - Primary use: for thorough learners who don’t want to waste time; cuts out like 80% of frequency 1 words
- Overlapping Words Only
- - Primary use: for binge-readers (people who want to spend the least amount of time on an SRS)

On https://floflo.moe/alchemizer/, I have a message “Sorry! This content is for our Patrons who pledge $5 and over!”, which is my case, so I clicked on the “Unlock with Patreon” button, and got this error :

Just to clarify, you guys are clicking the ‘log in with patreon’ button and then it’s immediately throwing you an error? It’s not like taking you to the patreon login page and then giving you an error after you log in?

First thoughts:

when the names are long enough that they get cut off, you can’t see which volume you’re selecting in multi-volume series
it’s a bit confusing that the ‘frequency’ tag still appears above the vocabulary table - the alchemizer overrides it and it can’t be changed anyway, so it’s not necessarily correct (like I’m looking at ‘frequency 1 words only’ but the little tag still says ‘frequency 3’)
I really like that the book pictures appear when you select them
I also really like that you show frequency of each word in source and target text - some frequency 1 words appears loads in the other text! Could you do this for the ‘overlapping only’ option as well?

I just released a patch that’ll show the type of list you searched up instead of just saying ‘vocabulary’ so hopefully that’ll clear up some of the confusion in the mean time.

I’ll try to get that fixed.

Yeah, a lot of frequency 1 words are trash but not all of them. There are a ton of them though so one of the goals with the alchemizer was to clarify which ones might be useless now but not useless in the future. Glad that’s succeeding.

I’ll try to. The overlapping option is something that I need to research some more. Like, I’ve had overlapping lists come with a query time of .5 seconds and other come out at 14 seconds lol

You’ve ruined my day… I’m gonna be sitting here for hours trying out different combinations of books and list types… It’s really interesting seeing how some books seems to pair better together in terms of one being good learning preparation for the next.

Yeah, I think having this would sort of let you see the opposite of the frequency 1 thing - some overlapping words probably only appear once in each book, so maybe wouldn’t actually be as helpful to learn as a frequency 1 word which appears 15 times in the target book. Also it would let me waste more of my life clicking on things.

I was gonna say, I noticed the warning about the overlapping list but so far all of mine have worked within a second or two. I’ve only been looking at fairly short books though, so maybe it’s more of an issue for the monster books.

Try the first and second items, Akai Akumu + Biblia volume I, on overlapping. 30 seconds. Y I K E S. On the other hand Akai Akumu + vol 2 only took 8 seconds. Somehow.

Oh come now, that only took… 13 seconds for me?! Yeah okay that’s quite painful. Warning justified

Edit: actually, having the frequencies for both books in ‘primary list’ and/or ‘primary list + frequency 1’ would be very helpful as well/instead. I could then essentially use the primary list at frequency 1 to make vocab lookup nice and easy, but be able to see which frequency 1 words I can safely ignore rather than learn.
