Well, lo and behold, there really is a species called blue porcupinefish! :eyes:

It seems to be very rare. And the coloration is most vivid when young like in the picture. BUT as for being huge…hardly! :joy:

Ehehehe :blue_heart:
I did see that beautiful fellow whilst browsing, the blue is so intense!

if this fish would like to believe it’s the largest living thing on this planet, who are we to crush its dream? :disappointed_relieved:

More like @koichi 's fugu dream. :eyes: But, not sure anything can touch him now that he’s ascended/descended!

I posted this in the poll thread but in case anyone else is interested:

These tiny little sluggos eat algae, digest it, but leave the chloroplasts intact and store them in their little dangly appendages. Then later they use those chloroplasts to convert those to energy. Seems like they can survive for months on the energy converted during the photosynthesis alone! (Not super sure about that source though). They also live in Japan (near the southern islands).

Costasiella kuroshimae , also known as “leaf slug”[1] or “leaf sheep”[2], is a species of sacoglossan sea slug, a shell-less marine opisthobranch gastropod mollusk in the family Costasiellidae. They can grow up to 1 cm in length.

It performs kleptoplasty, which is the process of retaining the chloroplasts from the algae it feeds on so that it can use them to perform photosynthesis.

The type locality is Kuroshima, Taketomi, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands

Here’s some more “True Facts” from Ze Frank. Minor language warning.

These guys get a cute mention too

This is the 兜蟹 - かぶとがに - Horseshoe crab.
Apart from being living fossils, they play an incredible role in medical applications that I did not know about. These creatures are so valuable, hopefully soon we won’t need to rely on their precious blood anymore.

(Section 4 of the Wiki article)

Harvest for blood

Horseshoe crabs use hemocyanin to carry oxygen through their blood. Because of the copper present in hemocyanin, their blood is blue.[37] Their blood contains amebocytes, which play a similar role to the white blood cells of vertebrates in defending the organism against pathogens. Amebocytes from the blood of L. polyphemus are used to make Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL), which is used for the detection of bacterial endotoxins in medical applications

I think this one is self explanatory! ^^

So that’s why noble’s blood is blue as well? :eyes: :joy:

Super interesting. I knew about these guys from Endless Ocean, but not that we used their blood for medical science. Poor guys! I’m sure they didn’t expect to be used like that!

As for eating them…I’m still not convinced. (even if I like crabs, shrimp and crayfish…but living fossils…>_> )

Fun fact: the Arctic is named after the bears - “arktos” is Ancient Greek for “bear”.

And Antarctica is literally “Place where there are no bears”. That translation sounds much smoother if translated to Japanese imo:
