Sea bunny I have no idea what they’re called in Japanese
I really like the Japanese legend about orcas or killer whales. Majestic creatures and quite intelligent! In Japanese they’re called 鯱 しゃち or シャチ
(just hanging out with one’s friends )*
*In reality, I think they are looking for penguins=food=nom nom )
You don’t need to be vicious to be deadly.
“Thus we see the parts of the plan fall into place: the water receiving from earth and air the simple materials, storing them up until the gathering energy of the spring sun wakens the sleeping plants to a burst of dynamic activity, hungry swarms of plank-tonic animals growing and multiplying upon the abundant plants, and themselves falling prey to the shoals of fish; all, in the end, to be redissolved into their component substances when the inexorable laws of the sea demand it. Individual elements are lost to view, only to reappear again and again in different incarnations in a kind of material immortality. Kindred forces to those which, in some period inconceivably remote, gave birth to that primeval bit of protoplasm tossing on the ancient seas continue their mighty and incomprehensible work. Against this cosmic background the life span of a particular plant or animal appears, not as a drama complete in itself, but only as a brief interlude in a panorama of endless change.”
– Rachel Carson, from the book “Lost Woods: The Discovered Writing of Rachel Carson”
Welcome to the thread! ^>^
More sea slugs 海牛 うみうし or ウミウシ, because they’re dangerously beautiful!
(I only recognize this last one from having played Endless Ocean 2 (Wii) If only I remembered the name, white-striped something something (?)… )
Some googling later…It appears this rather popular sea slug does have a Japanese name “gomafu biroodo umiushi, which loosely translates to black speckled velvet sea slug” according to some unverified source.* At least the last part should be right, it is a 海牛.

WaniKani actually has Clownfish as a vocab item: 熊之実 (くまのみ), level 57.
Well, good to know I’m learning useful things in this thread! More tasty, I mean, interesting sea creatures: crustaceans!
Ornate Spiny Lobster 伊勢海老 いせえび or イセエビ
Porcelain crabs 蟹瞞 かにだまし or カニダマシ
Swimming crab 蝤蛑 がざみ or ガザミ
Red crabs migration (!)
Hermit crabs using anemones for protection 宿借り やどかり or ヤドカリ (lodge renting! )
Goth hermit crab! (a bit morbid though >_> )
I’m also in love with these guys, Moray eels. Comes in many forms, colors, and markings! 鱓 うつぼ or ウツボ (as in container?! I guess, that makes sense). I can’t name the different types of moray eel, but the videos I posted from Bubble Vision about the Andeman Sea and Lambeth Straight have several morays named and filmed.
Moray eel vs sea snake
Me after running to the bus… >_>
White Mouth Moray ワカウツボ
Make out session (?)
器 うつわ indeed!
When an eel bites your knee as you swim in the sea, that’s a moray…
Never had real crab before
Here’s my favorite fish, salmon during their migration to their spawning areas upstream. Salmon: 鮭 さけ or しゃけ (jisho have a lot of words for salmon and salmon dishes).
Very delicious fish (what would Swedish Christmas be without gravlax or smoked salmon). Besides being very edible, it’s pretty amazing how they insist on traveling upstream for spawning.
Salmon migration fail XD
Rainbow Trout 虹鱒 にじます or ニジマス
(this one’s more subtle in flavor, but super tasty as well. But, it’s also a beautiful fish)
Once when I was in Suriname, my uncle had a trunk full of live crabs and we had a crab feast.
Let’s hope you get the chance in the future! ^>^ It’s delicious (well all crustaceans are nom nom ).
More sea slugs, because I can’t get over how alien-looking and beautiful they are.
This one can’t be real?! It’s literally a cartoon cow face and giant leaves for a body.
I would die for this sea slug.
I’ll go do some research, looking it up again! ^^;
Turns out that it’s real enough!
It’s a sheep sea slug. The Telegraph posted the first image on their Telegraph Pictures account.
I want to cry, I love it so much
