Anybody watching the Youtube vlog Pennie in Japan?

It’s in English. An older woman from New Zealand has been studying at Japanese language schools. She got a student visa. I only found it recently after she already broken her ankle while getting. The vlog is heavy on monetization, but she sometimes films her actual homework and inside her schools.

oops getting plastic surgery in Thailand.

Me! Although less interested since the plastic surgery. But I like that she’s open about how hard she finds things.

I am also less interested since the plastic surgery.:slightly_smiling_face: I was mainly interested in her experiences at Japanese language schools.

I miss the old study content. I know it was only a part of her videos but things like when she was preparing for a test.

I used to, but I started losing interest once talk of the plastic surgery started. And I’m just getting a weird vibe from the whole crowd funding thing. Quite a few people have advised she could likely get some reimbursement through her Japan national health insurance for the leg, but it’s like she’s reluctant to even pursue it, or will pretend no one has mentioned it before… I don’t understand why someone who apparently is in financial trouble wouldn’t be jumping at the chance of getting some money back. So yeah… something feels a bit off

Like you, the original content drew me in. Studying Japanese, living in Japan, going to real estate agents to rent apartments. She is not in financial “trouble” and is not really saying she is. She is saying she has unexpected expenses related to her injury while getting plastic surgery. And for some people, especially older people and kiwis, who like the fantasy of throwing away your old life and starting a new one in Japan, it is a vicarious adventure. She has admitted to having NSH insurance, but that of course does not cover everything 100%. I find it a little hard to completely turn away. It’s like a car accident on the freeway.

That it is, like watching an accident happening in slow motion…

I would say someone who says all their savings are gone and they are not actually working, qualifies as being in a financial pickle though. But is all the savings really gone though… that’s the question

And I’m talking about the fact that she’s not at least trying to get her emergency leg surgery partially reimbursed by her Japanese NHI, not whether she is enrolled. The NHI also covers overseas medical emergencies.

She’s already explained a few times - her old school cancelled the insurance without her knowing. She tried to get them to cover the costs but they won’t.

She had explained this - her old school cancelled her NHI without her knowing. She thought she was covered. She tried to get them to reimburse her but they won’t.

The school cannot actually cancel a student’s NHI coverage, they do not have the authority to do that, since it is mandated by the Japanese government for all residents to be enrolled. It is not tied to the school, only a resident can cancel it themselves once they choose to leave Japan.

They did though. All sorts of things happen in Japan that shouldn’t.

I doubt that. They probably cancelled the supplementary insurance that many schools offer on top of NHI to bridge the 30% gap, which would make more sense in that situation.

They didn’t cancel her insurance. I am embarrassed to admit I have watched enough of these videos to have seen where she says she has NHI insurance and did not lose it. It might have been something she said in the comments. I believe Kitsune38 was correct in saying that she was referring to some kind of supplemental insurance that some language schools provide because NHI only pays 70%. I am not interested in her current content. But, I am mildly interested in seeing if she finds a way to stay in Japan long term. This is a person with a pretty strong will.

Oh really? Well that sounds about right then. Something is not quite adding up…
