[Android] Smouldering Durtles (v1.2.0) - native app with offline lessons and reviews, plus themes and script-like features!

I decided to resume WK, and rather than using a bunch of userscripts like I did heretofore, I decided to try out Smouldering Durtles. After going through the settings, doing some reviews, more settings tweaking, and some more reviews, I’m really liking it. Planning to take it slow and just chip away at the 800 reviews for a while

I got sick over new years and got dug in for about 1000. It was brutal, and don’t be discouraged by the aftershocks as the glut of same-time higher stage items hits months later. You’ll see some churn but you’ll get back on track.

Yeah, it shouldn’t take too long; I’m expecting about 2-3 weeks at this pace, given that I’m on pace to go through the original 800+ in about a week, and adding a week or two on for getting things through apprentice. My pacing system was to never add lessons unless I had zeroed my reviews at some point that day, and I think it worked well. No doubt a bit less efficient than the more deliberate methods which seem to be the norm, but then again, I’m not aiming for anything near max pace

UPDATE: Zeroed the reviews for the first time just now

This has probably been answered, but I didn’t see it with a quick search, what are the green up arrows above some bars in the upcoming new reviews table on the dashboard? the number of new lessons possible to unlock from those new reviews?

The reviews that will come up that are toward passing off the level

Ah, so kanji (and radicals? I forget) from the current level? at all stages, only Apprentice, or only Apprentice IV?

all apprentice stages of what you haven’t passed off. Ones that go to Guru and go back down won’t be in that count.

Ah, interesting. Cool to see

Hi all.
I’ve recently bought a new phone (Google Pixel 10) and for the first time I’m failing to add the token in the app.
When I copy paste the token in the input field and clic on save, a navigation seem to begin and one second later I’m back on the same page, the token input field is reset and… nothing.
However I can see “8 background tasks… :hourglass_not_done:” on top of the screen, I don’t get if it means an update process is stuck somehow.
Of course I’ve tried deleting and installing the apk again.
Does it ring a bell to someone ?

For what it’s worth, I just set the app on my pixel 10 pro with no issues.

First time trying an app, couldn’t deal with wanikani being unable to add a redo button… though it mean I’ll have to do all my reviews on the phone…

And being able to pause session is a nice bonus.

So after I a few days.

What a life changer that is. I can relax knowing I won’t be punished for typo because of redo and learn better.

No more accidental refresh of the web page either.

I never ever review on the main site. My typing is bad and early on I got punished a lot for typos. Now I get to be comfortable with a Japanese IME and if I slip a finger without catching it, I can chastise myself for it instead of letting the software beat me with a stick for it.

First of all: thanks so much for Smouldering Durtles. This app is single-handedly responsible for pulling me out of some very long WK struggles (I started in 2016!) because it enabled me to build a routine where I do my reviews on my phone before getting out of bed in the morning.

Okay, now for the bug report. I just found the Action for “close enough” answer option and set it to show a toast. I also have lightning mode enable. The combination of the two is awesome and makes for very efficient reviewing. But sadly the toast overlaps the next question:

(Maybe this also has to do with the fact that I increased the main question font size in the settings?)

Uh oh is this dashboard update going to break everything? ;_;

I had something similar happen: As I migrated to a new pixel device I had the same error.
It believe it was due to the backup function of SD to be failing: some apps allow Google to backup their state as they are reinstalled on a new device)
I got out of the loop by doing something along the lines of: Long press on the app icon > app info > Storage and cache > clear storage.

Continuing after a long break (a month or two, guilty again…) the app refused to sync (“can’t talk to Wanikani servers” error) until I went to the web version and performed “thawing”, whatever that may mean. Maybe they put to sleep accounts that weren’t active for a while now.

After that the app seems to be syncing normally. Could be a coincidence, but I tried syncing a few of times before using the web version. Just sharing my experience in case it’s useful.

Using the newest version 1.2.1, I noticed that the review screen looks different on landscape vs portrait mode, and it feels broken to me.

I LOVE your app. So much more convenient than using my laptop all the time.

I was using the self-study quiz feature and found that the number of reviews does not cross 100 even if the settings are set to unlimited. I realised this while I was trying to self-study vocabulary. (If a level had 122 vocab words, only 100 showed up in the quiz). Was hoping someone here could help me so I could review all the vocabulary, even if the number of reviews cross 100 =)

Under Lesson/review settings, the max number of review items and max number of self-study items can be set separately. Also, if you have advanced settings enabled, check if you have any limits under Self-study advanced settings.

THANK YOU!! (I was only looking under the advanced settings, not the lesson/ review settings.) Back to vocabulary learning I go!
