Been a while since my last post as I have been hard at work giving the app a facelift. You might probably be wondering why that is needed, well I wouldn’t if I my hands were not forced. The short version is that I got an email from WaniKani requesting that I take down the app because it is a copy of the website.
That email couldn’t have come at the worst of times as the iOS version was in the works. Suffice to say I put that on hold and went to work starting with creating the designs in Figma for what I envisioned the UI should look like (took a while to get everything right). Then I proceeded to bringing the designs to life in code. I am nearing the finish line for this hence, my making this post.
Seeing that this app is no longer what I originally intended, I will be making it a new app thereby killing the old one as a result.
In this new form of the app, I have added self-study quiz which now replaces the old extra study. This allows for customisation or selecting from a list of presets. Additionally, @Shelley’s request for hiding English sentences and clicking it to unhide. Also, the vocabulary is now highlighted in the Japanese sentences.
In the coming weeks, the new app should be available to the original testers – you will need to join testing before you can download it.
Great work! Sad to hear about having to scrap the previous version but looking forward to testing the new app! 
An aside; if you are a developer or hobbyist using VS Code you might want to try my theme – Crow. It is a high contrast theme that supports fancy fonts like Cascadia, Operator, Fira etc. Concerned about your eyesight and screen brightness then Crow is the theme for you as it eliminates bright lights making coding much more fun. Additionally, I am exploring another style of presenting the pitch accent like you find on 和独辞書.
I’d like to test more vocabulary, so I’d appreciate leaving a reply with the kana and the pitch number/type.
would it be possible to have specific items as a preset to do extra quizzes in the new app?
What are the items you would want as a preset?
I’d love a preset where I can make my own list of kanji or vocab that I’m having trouble with — or maybe ones I keep mixing up with each other — so I can focus on drilling those.
I do not think I can make it that specific but as it is implemented now there are filters you can toggle say by level, SRS stage and subject type. Do you think this captures your set?
Sorry if this has been asked before, but any plans to add an “Anki Mode” where you can click to display the answer and then choose if you answered it correctly? Sometimes it can be annoying to type out answers on a small device so this would be a huge QOL improvement.
I have been thinking about this in recent times and even gone as far as creating a proof of concept where you can swipe left to say no and right to say yes in addition to being able to tap a card to view the answer. However, IMO I think this mode can lead to gaining the system (cheating) more often than anyone would like to admit. In that line, if this feature were to be a thing in the app, I’d probably use it on the self-study side of things.
Additionally, typing out the answers helps reinforce the learning.
The new app (Mina 皆) has been sent in (to Play Store) for review. On approval it should immediately become available to every tester that once signed up to test the now defunct Wani (we will miss it).
In that light I want to present some of what is new in Mina. A lot of the UI has changed but not everything is entirely brand new. Here are a couple new additions and changes:
Updated Search Result Rows
With this change, you should immediately see if a vocab is a common word indicated with green box with “C”. It also shows more meanings as opposed to just the primary meaning.
New Settings
Settings adds two new options, Subject and Font settings. Subject settings allow for changing context sentence translation visibility, highlighting word, toggle JLPT level and pitch accent. Font settings allow switching fonts for lessons and reviews. There are about 10 different fonts to choose from. Additionally, Dashboard settings have moved out of General and now on its own.
Pitch Accent Indicator
When you enable pitch accent in subject settings, the pitch lines for that subject will be drawn beside the pronunciation.
Restyled Lessons screen
The Lessons screen has been streamlined; the content area is tinted based on the current subject being viewed. Additionally, you swipe instead of clicking on buttons to go forward or backward.
Restyled Reviews screen
The Reviews screen also got streamlined.
Notice the fonts are different in the last two images; that is because I selected different fonts while testing and this you can do in font settings.

The Subject screen was restyled too coupled with new additions like collocations (where available), and other changes based on settings.
Redesigned Dashboard
The new dashboard has been decluttered showing only what most would consider “useful” as the default. Other dashboard content can be enabled in dashboard settings.
A couple more changes I left out particularly the profile screen which also got a redesign.

This looks awesome and I’m so excited to try it out, but it seems I’m way too late to the party? It doesn’t look like there’s any way to join the beta since the old version got removed from the Play Store. Will it eventually be available to the general public? Could I bribe you into letting me borrow the APK?

Since you are keen on trying it and don’t want to wait for open-testing you can add your email here and I will add you to the special list of first testers so you get it as soon as it is available.

Give it a spin and let me know of any issues you encounter. The current version is still being worked on and you may notice some differences when comparing it with some of the screenshots above. The new changes will come in the next update. Try the new fonts and let me know the ones you like and dislike and if you have a font you’d like to see let me know as well.

At the moment the app is currently in closed testing phase and only available to the original testers of the old app. You are welcome to become a tester by dropping your email in the spreadsheet I linked above and I can add you which will then allow you to download the app as it is hidden from non-testers.
