Does anyone else have any personal mnemonics that got them through a kanji they struggled to brain store?
Yes!! I used to play this tower defense game called Kingdom Rush on Kindle Fire (lol) way back when and one of the voice lines for sending your units off to attack is “FOR HONOUR AND GLORY!!!”. So for the vocab items 光栄 (honour) and 栄光 (glory), to remember them I always say “FOR KOUEI AND EIKOU!!!” to myself. I have not mixed them up since I started doing this
I make purrsonal mnemonics quite often. For example,
i immediately thought of hoobastank as i read this thread title
was not disappointed when i opened it up
the hoobastank mnemonic is actually so good. even though i can remember this one, i think i’m gonna have this in my head every time i review it anyways lol
one example for me is 図 – in my head the “diagram that marks the treasure” leads you to a ペンギン🐧 enclosure guarded by an emperor penguin. except the emperor penguin isn’t able to guard today, he’s in a food coma. you ask him if he’s ok, and he explains 今日一日中**ずっと**食べちまった “i’ve done nothing but eat the whole day” while making a bit of a queasy face —> 図. this gives me both the ず and と readings
i notice that my mnemonics can be terribly specific though – i remember the planets specifically because i know the days of the week in both japanese and french
then the other four planets are
it works for me but … it’s not great in text ![]()
