Am I going too crazy?

My experience so far with WaniKani:

  • Really clean, polished product, works like a charm
  • The mnemonics really are working, as well as using vocab as an extra way to reinforce kanjis and introduce real words in Japanese

But. It’s so slow. It’s slooooow. And sometimes I feel like I have no control over how slow it is. My experience is I can handle maybe 150/200 items in apprentice, but frequently I’m at <80, which means I get maybe 50 reviews a day. It’s especially aggravating since I’m at 97% accuracy (and like half of my mistakes are typos when I use it on mobile), so I’m confident I know all of the Kanji that need to be gurud.

What do I do about this?

I think the way that WaniKani makes the language feel like a complete system has been hard to replicate with Anki and I do want to keep at it, but the slowness drives me crazy.

From your post I see you are going very fast, I think your time is best spend to do WaniKani and also do something else besides it, such as reading, watching series etc. This will make your Kanji’s also visible in context and be very rewarding :slightly_smiling_face:

WaniKani might be very unforgiving when you make mistakes. That is exactly why you need that handful of reviews to learn things properly. Trust me, once you truly learn and make no mistakes it goes fast. Try to use other stuff in addition to wanikani. Wanikani will never be enough by it own when you truly wanna speak japanese fluently.

You can feel free to increase your lessons per day aswell. But this will make you feel suffocated once the Apprentice stack up where you might end up doing the lessons multiple times a day

Those low numbers of reviews are a precious item that few people actually recognize until they are crushed under 300 reviews. Take the win and invest the spare energies into reading.

You’re able to pick more lessons per day if you choose the “Advanced” option on the lessons tile. You can also go into settings and change how many lessons it gives you per day.

Wanikani is a great tool but you won’t learn japanese by itself, grammar is important too, but reading or trying to follow a show are important too. The best though is to try to talk to someone in japanese. The thing is that it’s not just about vocabulary, but how to use it. Grammar is important to construct sentences, yes, but it’s more important to learn about topics that japanese care about, how they talk about it and even what they don’t say! Also, you’ll soon have more than enough reviews per day, so enjoy it while it lasts

Thank you so much for the replies everyone!
Got it, sounds like there will be many more reviews in the future and I should focus on grammar/picking some nice media to follow along!
