コメント: I experimented with AI created example sentences for my cards, and while more useful than no example sentence, I think there’s a lot to be said for examples that are drawn from actual input. So now I’m defaulting to preferring the original sentence. It feels as though there is some strong connection between recollection of meaning and lived experience, where the input is the lived experience.

Using Migaku, it’s easy to lift these sentences from input for languages it contains, but for Latin this will post a problem: either manually enter the sentence, sacrificing time for effect, or allow the AI to generate a less impactful sentence. For now, I’m toying with the idea of letting AI cover basic Latin vocabulary but moving over to actual input sources for less common words.

I’m not sure if this actually fits your use case, but it sounds like it might: I’ve been using Vocabsieve for Russian and Swedish mining, and it theoretically supports basically any language for which you can provide a dictionary file (I use wiktionary dumps).

It works similarly to Migaku. In it’s reader, when you click a word, it automatically pulls the full sentence, the word, and the definition, and you can send it to Anki. Outside of its reader, you have to copy the whole sentence, but it pulls it directly from the clipboard, and then you just have to click on the word you want the definition for and it does everything else automatically like normal.

It also technically keeps track of known words and can analyze ebooks based on that list, but it doesn’t do highlighting, and it’s a strict binary of known/unknown (but pretty customizable about when a word crosses that line). It’s a lot less polished in general, but it works well enough for languages Migaku doesn’t support. Once it’s set up, mining from an ebook or the web with the original sentence is pretty easy.

The one thing I haven’t gotten to work well is pulling sound from forvo and other sources, though it theoretically supports it. Although, I’m not sure how relevant that is for Latin, anyway.

That’s a solid recommendation. I appreciate it. I just downloaded it to give it a shot, and it works with Latin. I’m amazed how well integrated it is with Anki, though I’ll definitely be changing the default note type lol. For some reason, I can’t get its reader to work yet, but I haven’t spent much time as it’s already late here. I don’t think I’ll need the reader though, at least for the texts I’m working with at the moment, because I can just type in the target sentence pretty quickly. I do wish it had an option to translate the entire sentence in the answer though - maybe it does and I just haven’t seen that yet.

コメント: With how effective Vocabsieve looks to be, I might scrap my current Anki deck and restart fresh. Or, I might keep my current progress and add to the current deck. Though I’m tempted to start fresh and have an internally consistent deck, I’m also conscious of my history of restarting decks, language, and projects, and thus losing progress and, ultimately, time. So I’m leaning toward just picking up where I left the deck a few weeks ago and adding future words using the new tool.

I can also continue to take advantage of AI by manually pasting in notes on word use, but perhaps only for certain specific words rather than every word.

The tool will help solidly with Latin, though so far there seems to be no tool able to handle Ancient Greek.

コメント: I’ve got a fairly nice cadence for daily reviewing now, and motivation is firmly back. My daily French cards have eased off and Spanish is stable. Ditching Japanese audio, video, and writing was definitely a good move for now while I stay focused on finishing WK. I’m eager to get back to it but want to stay the course with my method. Similarly, I want to get back into reading Latin but I need to complete my vocab deck from Familia Romana first. So general reading in French is a pleasant alternative (if I want to learn something now, I just read the French Wikipedia, for instance) and I’m trying my hand at stumbling through Spanish reading for language exposure. Again, my specific goal at present is only reading fluency for these languages. That said, I do miss watching the French creators I was following. When I dip my toes back into French listening, I can definitely tell that my proficiency has fallen in the past three months compared with last summer and fall. Maybe at some point I’ll take French to the next level, but for now it would detract from my desire to learn to read other languages so I’ll remain focused.

In terms of the next step, I’ll probably attain reading comfort in Spanish within the next few months. I’ll be firmly in the reading stage for Latin again by that point. WK should wrap up around September. So the question is: which language next? There are three options: Italian, German, and Ancient Greek. Italian has obvious connection to Latin, French, and Spanish, so should be relatively easy. German would be a step up in difficulty. Greek is like Latin: I was comfortable with it years ago but would need to begin by focusing on transcribing vocabulary. I’m not sure which way to go when the time comes and each has something to be said for it.

This is a good video. I think it’s the right way to think about language learning. Not to say that a person has to learn several languages, but rather to think of learning a language as part of the broader project of second language acquisition in general.
