Advice from a level 120 veteran

Hey friends,

I just hit level 60 for the second time, am a JLPT N1 passer, and work for a Japanese company in the US conducting business in Japanese frequently. I wanted to share some resources I’ve used that could be helpful for others.

Wanikani: a given, but I still use it as a dictionary sometimes. Also, I really recommend this fan site that allows you to look up kanji by their wanikani radical names Multi-Radical Kanji Search (WTK-Search)

Rocket japanese: my day 1 app for learning the language, it helped form a baseline.

Japanese pod 101: good listening and grammar practice up to the N2 level.

Imabi: extremely detailed and dense free lessons from basic hiragana to ancient Okinawan dialects.

Shin Kanzen Master N1: the sloggiest of slogs that put me at the N1 level to pass the test and then forget a ton of obscure things that never come up again. But in seriousness, I don’t think there is a better textbook for JLPT prep.

Italki: hands down the best resource for learning japanese is speaking to native speakers. I have over 500 hours on Italki with my tutor and on my frequent business trips to Japan, I meet up with my tutor and his family for weekend trips to cultural sites and restaurants. Results vary, but if you can find a teacher like Gaku Sensei, you’ll be speaking in no time and make lifelong friends.

Internal motivation: I picked up rocket japanese and WK in 2021 during the pandemic and never let myself quit. Now I work with Japanese companies and have carved a niche out for myself in the American business world. All because I wanted to play Dragon Quest X

Feel free to reach out anytime. Thanks WK, Koichi, and the WK community.
