Advanced Japanese Book Club // Now voting! // Now Reading: 六人の嘘つきな大学生

Thanks! I had just taken the direct link from Natively. Need to have a look at what’s the difference

Yours is not an ebook, it’s the 単行本 (hardcover) paper version. The second (cheaper) link has ebook and 文庫本 (paperback).

Thanks! So 硝子の塔の殺人 is definitely an outlier

That’s because that also is a hardcover: its price isn’t out of line with hardcover prices. Since it was published in mid 2021 it’s probably due for a bunkobon release soon. (We’ve had one or two of this kind of nomination before: I have only started voting for 香君 in the last round or two because before that it was hardcover only. And この本を盗むものは was hardcover when we read it.)

This is an unfortunate side effect of Natively not having good support for multiple editions of the same book - the links itself are to whatever version of the book was first submitted, which can often be the hardcover because that gets published first. Amazon is usually good about having one page that lets you select the “format” for the book, but other sellers are often not, and will give no indication that there’s a cheaper in-stock version of the book their page lists as expensive and unavailable.

Sorry for the delayed notice - I am currently traveling without computer
Just to let you know that we have a winner! Our next pick is

六人の嘘つきな大学生

@Malinkal congratulations! Would you like to run the club for it?

:exploding_head: I will probably need some advice on getting stuff set up, but yes I’d be happy to run it!

Great!

Don’t worry, it is not nearly as much work as it may sound. First of all, it would be good if you could set up a home thread for the club at some point, and then we can have a discussion about the schedule over there. You can either have a look at existing clubs and copy what you like, or you can have a look at the extensive collection of tips and tricks: Tips for Running a WaniKani Book Club
Once the club starts, you should post weekly threads, which you can also mix and match from existing clubs or by following some advice in the “Tips” thread.

And that’s basically it! The book club should start on March 29th, so there is still quite some time to figure things out.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask here! :+1:

Thank you! I’ll get the thread set up in the next few days then

Had enough time to get the thread up today! Please let me know if anything’s wrong or broken, and your thoughts etc.
Also I think there is currently coin-back promotions going on for Bookwalker and Amazon making the e-book about half-price for the next few days.

I just realized that I should get the poll for our next pick up real soon now  The current book will be done faster than I had expected :woman_shrugging:

Which means I will accept new nominations for the next 24 hours or so, and then I will start the poll! Sorry for the short notice - if you can’t get your nomination in this time around, you can prepare it for the poll after that one already

It’s Poll Time!!!

Have a look at the List of Proposed Books section in the first post for details on each book. If you are interested, you can have a look at the books’ Natively levels through this list. The Natively level is also annotated in the poll in square brackets after each book’s name.

Do not rely solely on the levels when making a choice. Please have a look at the nomination posts and text samples if you haven’t already.

Expected reading pace: The proposals fall into two categories, Fast and Hard. We aim to read fast books at 30-50 pages per week and hard books at ~15 pages per week (that number might vary a bit throughout, depending on the book’s breaks and chapters). For manga, depending on difficulty and chapter length, we will probably read one to several chapters per week. The pick’s exact reading schedule will be negotiated before the book club kicks off.

Start of Book Club: We will start the next book on May 31st (after a one-week break).

Poll duration: The poll will be closed on 2025-04-19T11:00:00Z. You can choose up to 5 options.

Oh, and if somebody could update the thread title to “Now voting!” that would be great. Thanks!

Already ?? It feels like we’ve only just started with 六人の嘘つきな大学生 !

We usually want to finish a poll 6 weeks before the book club for its winner starts (so the participants have enough time to acquire a physical copy if they so desire), so for short books the next-book-poll comes really early

I plan to read 金閣寺 | L48 at some point, but not sure if someone tried. I acquired the book some time ago.

Oh, there was back in 2021. Discourse search is funny today.

I was thinking of nominating まちカドまぞく | L35 as another hard manga choice. It’s an extremely text heavy 4-koma that includes archaic text in places. I figure it would be read at a similar pace as Nausicaa, so probably two volumes over 6-8 weeks. I didn’t actually keep up with Nausicaa though, so if anyone can share how that went at that pace given this is the advanced book club, that would help me decide how to nominate it.

Incidentally, 香君 is two volumes in hardback and four volumes as bunko – how much of it would we read as a club? (Not sure about ebook – it looks like bookwalker have switched from “ebook of the hardback” to “ebook of the bunko” so also 4 volumes now.)

I originally nominated it as the hardcover, so probably that. Really weird that they changed the ebook through. It means that my kindle version no longer exists. I wonder how that works (not gonna delete my copies to find out).

Obviously if it’s easier to read just one of the shorter volumes that’s fine too. From the TOC, the first two bunko volumes cover the same chapters as the original 上 volume. So either approach should be fine.

(Side note: the new four volume set showing all four seasons is really cool)

Three-way tie :woman_juggling:

It looks like we still have a tie. At least it’s not three-way any more, I guess

Are we going to do a tiebreak vote, then?
