I’m aware that the Ghibli adaption involves airplanes, but Ghibli is known to deviate from the source material significantly, so I actually have no idea if that is relevant.

Yeah, Miyazaki is definitely known to deviate from source material, but it’s even more deviated in this instance because this book isn’t actually the source material for the movie. 
The film is a biography of sorts of the guy who was involved in developing the Zero fighter plane, hence the involvement of airplanes. The book is not.
The common factor between the book and the film is that there’s a woman with tuberculosis living in a sanatorium.

From what I read in Natively and Amazon so far, it seems that the story does revolve around this theme, so I think something like could work.
