Oh! Seems I miscalculated the start date for the next club
If the participants of the Nausicaä club agree, we can move the start date forward one week, but I don’t know how this will work out as everybody needs to order physically? Any opinion on that one @Belthazar ?
The Halloween/Spooky Summer Book Club is currently voting for its first official pick. We’ll start reading in July or August, and the schedule will probably be informal if it exists at all. If you’re interested in a spooky read, come vote here:
Is the plan to start マリアビートル at the end of July? I’m very excited for that pick. Who doesn’t love trains?
Although I’m probably very quick to overload myself between this and Spooky Summer and still not being finished with 1Q84… (and I’m sure I’ll end up delaying all of it to read the volumes of Shadow House that came out while I was away)
I took the liberty of making the list of previous books more prominent in the top post. I always thought it was a pity that it was hidden under “Archive > Book Polls and Winners”, and this seems more in line with other books clubs. But if you all think it takes too much space, we can hide it under a details tag.
Edit: I tried to make the table more compact so that the titles don’t wrap on mobile, but I don’t know if it’s better. We could put the extra info in another table but then it’s more work to edit…
Quick shout out that the Natively Mystery Book Club is now voting!
The poll runs for 7 days and we have 18 books to choose from! Most of them fall in the ABC level and our speed tends to be around 30-50 pages a week*; a few are on the easier side (mid 20s Natively level).
*we tend to start slower and ramp up as people get impatient to know the solution to the mystery
Thanks for rearranging the OP! (I wanted to say this for a long time but I was so busy I just kept forgetting it all the time sorry!)
I must say for me the list of current nominations is way more important than the list of books read, (and I dislike this in the other book club OPs as well) but if it’s just me, then I’m happy to have it the way it is now.
I think the biggest hindrance is the long title of “Tatami Galaxy” - I wonder whether we should remove the English title altogether? (as the Master List now also removed the English titles afaik) and then it would wrap better, I guess.
One thing that irks me though, is that now the polls are no longer enumerated. As I’m referring to the poll numbers in the “books with low interest” table, I’d like to actually be able to see the numbers somewhere… Would y’all mind if I put a short (#1) etc. before the poll date? (with or without brackets). If we shorten the Tatami Galaxy title, it should still take up less space than before.
I see no reason to keep the English title, especially since it’s the only one that features it. I had it in the club for easy recognition purposes fat good it did but we certainly don’t need it in the table.
I really like the previous picks being prominently displayed. However, I do agree that the current nominations are also important, and at the time of voting even more so. Maybe we could move them up, just before Previous Books (just the list, not the whole section)? Or at least make their title larger? I keep missing them when I scroll down.
If it’s useful, I say let’s include it regardless of space. Not that it takes up much.
OK I moved just the list of nominations above the list of previous books, and I made the titles the same size, so now that bit should be better, I hope.
It looks a little bit funny that now the list of proposals and the explanation for nominating are detached, but that probably just needs some getting used to, and it makes sense to have the lesser used information (i.e. how to nominate stuff) further down than the more frequently used information (i.e. what do I want to vote on).
I added it to the list (and turned it into its own column for the sake of proper alignment). Looks good to me!
