東野圭吾 fans unite~

I’m really happy to see so many fans of 東野圭吾 here.

Seeing as I haven’t read it myself yet, I’m going to have to pass! :joy: If we live reasonably close that postage isn’t an issue, I don’t mind swapping some of the books I’ve read though - or books I’d get back, for that.

Roger that~ :sparkles:

I like that series! I saw you didn’t mention 容疑者X, which is the first book in that series that isn’t a (connected) short story collection. If you find you don’t care overmuch for the short stories, I’d still recommend giving 容疑者X a try if you can get your hands on it. 東野圭吾 shines in long form.

Me too. :eyes: I own the full set, (10 volumes I believe) but have been waiting until I finish the Galileo series. Or what’s published so far at least. I’ve seen ナミヤ雑貨店の奇跡 around but don’t own it - isn’t that one of the few that’s available as an ebook even?

Weeelllllll… we can always just set up our own club if it’s not picked by an ‘official’ club like the ABC.

I own that one as well, but have not read it yet. Would love to eventually read it, too.

Shouting out that Natively’s Mystery Book Club is voting again :female_detective: We tend to read at about the same pace and level of books as the Advanced Book Club, but naturally with a focus on mystery books. We love new readers, so don’t be shy to join!

I can see 変な家 in the nomination list, does it make sense to keep now that it got a Club here?

There isn’t complete overlap between the two forums for book club readers, so I think it would be unfair to remove it on that basis. If it gets no votes, or if our nominations become full and it falls to the bottom for votes though it will be eliminated.

Edit: I did shout out that club starting up in the Mystery Club home thread though, so probably any interested readers went over here. It may end up vote less and take care of itself.

Well of course when I wrote this comment I also immediately placed an order for the three books haha.
Only to get an email that they actually didn’t have them in stock at the moment, and will get them maybe one day in 2 to 6 weeks.

You will never guess what happened next

Someone’s big brother has arrived
(Actually this is the 4th book so I hope that book 2 and 3 will come too :smiling_face_with_tear:)

… And the family is complete! I’m so happy

Even the thickest of books eventually comes to an end… And so it is time for another poll! :tada:

The Poll

Have a look at the List of Proposed Books section in the first post for details on each book. If you are interested, you can have a look at the books’ Natively levels through this list. The Natively level is also annotated in the poll in square brackets after each book’s name.

Do not rely solely on the levels when making a choice. Please have a look at the nomination posts and text samples if you haven’t already.

Expected reading pace: The proposals fall into two categories, Fast and Hard. We aim to read fast books at 30-50 pages per week and hard books at ~15 pages per week (that number might vary a bit throughout, depending on the book’s breaks and chapters). For manga, depending on difficulty and chapter length, we will probably read one to several chapters per week. The pick’s exact reading schedule will be negotiated before the book club kicks off.

Start of Book Club: We will start the next book on Nov 9th (after a one-week break).

Poll duration: The poll will be closed on 2024-09-30T16:00:00Z. You can choose up to 5 options.

Oh, and if somebody could update the thread title to “Now voting!” that would be great. Thanks!

I almost missed voting on this one – luckily I saw the reminder posted in another thread…

I just noticed that the paperback version of 香君 came out a few weeks ago (half the price of the hardback and a nicer format to read imho), which is timely for this vote.

Just curious what you mean? Just that it is easier to hold open? For my first book club I bought a hardback on purpose (used so price didn’t matter) in the hopes of a larger font…

I find hardbacks are heavier and more awkward to hold up to read, and they’re bulkier so less easy to carry around.

Without any actual drama  we found our next pick! It is

Interesting how the club leans towards nonfiction recently :upside_down_face:

@pm215 would you be willing to host the club for the book?

Sure, I can do that. Are there some instructions somewhere?

There is an extensive list in this thread:

but if you feel that this is too heavy for this small club, you can always copy the thread format of some previous book club if you like. There are no formal requirements, so please feel free to find an appropriate format.

I created the home thread for 本の読み方 スロー・リーディングの実践 :

Opinions on the schedule welcome – I’m not sure what pace we want to take this at. (I’ll have a look through at the table of contents etc at some point and put up some info about how long each section is.)

PS: let me know if I messed anything up setting up the thread
