Absolute Beginners Book Club // Reading Now: Yotsubato!

I wasn’t planning on joining, but I went ahead and bought it since it’s free. It shouldn’t be too much mental load for me to join though

I’ll probably “join”
by which I mean that I’ll start out reading according to the schedule
and then get impatient, read the whole thing in 2 days and never post again in the club, sorry :sob:

I’ll join too. It’s going to hurt for sure (I’m level 6), but the list of what to do before starting looks helpful.

Thanks for letting us know the book is temporarily available for free!

I bought physical copies of Yotsuba before the vote ended… and now I bought the soup book* on bookwalker because it is free… So I guess overall I will read a lot?!

*Whoever started talking about soups will have a hard time convicing others to use the real name of the manga xD

And I agree with whoever suggested Thai cuisine for good soups. Pho can also be considered a soup, no? Vietnamese cuisine is delicious.

I’d recommend reading at least a few pages of the book as soon as possible so you can figure out what you need to study more. When I first started reading, I picked up Yotsuba and realized I was seeing words I already knew but didn’t recognize because they were in a different tense or something like the polite form or -te form. That made me understand that I needed to study grammar on top of vocabulary, and now I feel better prepared to read something new.

Thats great advice!

Thanks Steven. I didn’t want to “pre-read” the book, it felt like cheating. Your suggestion makes sense, though. So several pages. :+1:

If you want to, you can try reading a different manga for now, just so you get an idea of what reading is like. It doesn’t have to be this one, exactly. But I think it does help to know what to expect going into it.

This is a good idea! You can always try choosing a previous pick that this book club read, so the club threads will be available as a resource.

Still counts.

Aside from giving some focus to grammar, you may also want to expose yourself to (pre-learn) some of the highest-frequency vocabulary from the volume.

You may even find you already know a handful of the most-used words!

You can’t cheat at book club, it’s not a test or a competition

(Also, if anything, “pre-reading” it is harder since you’re doing it without the help of the book club!)

HMMMMMMMMMMMMM :eyes:

JK, I would expect soup to be in there the most lol!

You are pretty helpful bunch here, you know that? Thanks for all the advice, I’m glad I decided to share my decision to join the club (was my first post on Wanikani forum - the hardest one).

Hoping to join in for the upcoming book! I grabbed it on Bookwalker, along with a couple of the past suggestions so I can try reading those while I’m waiting for the next one to start. (great suggestion from soggyboy!)

Wait, the winning manga sounds way more interesting that what I voted for! I haven’t attempted to join a book club in a while (Life, man…) but since it’s free and all… :pot_of_food:

Welcome to the book club! Also re: reading older club books, feel free to post in the old threads if you have more questions. Usually someone is watching them and will be able to answer any questions.

More soup converts! :steaming_bowl: (we really need some more variety in soup emojis)

こんにちはみんなさん!I’m back in my studying era and reading is one of the things I want to focus on this year, so I’d like to join the (soup) book club.

May I ask how it all actually… works? :eyes:

Keep an eye on the home thread of the book club. Each week, a thread will be created, specifying how much of the book the club will read that week (usually one chapter a week). Read the specified passage during the week (or prior to, if you like), and post comments or questions in that week’s thread.

You’re free to read the whole book up-front if you’d like - many do - but if you do, hold onto comments or questions for upcoming chapters until the relevant thread gets posted.

Who’s ready for soup :eyes:

I’ve never been more ready for soup in my life
