Absolute Beginners Book Club // Reading Next: Doraemon

Yay! Doraemon finally made it :blue_heart: I think this will be such a perfect and fun read for the ABBC! When I nominated it last year I was really surprised it hadn’t already had a club.

I guess the first question from soggy will be if I can lead this club. I am feeling overwhelmed atm so I just wanted to ask first - is there anyone who also loves Doraemon and/or would like to lead the club? Speak up by Sunday! Otherwise I will take it on, I just thought I’d ask if anyone else would like to, as it is really fun to lead a club and a different experience on the forums.

And welcome to the club @garnavis !!

Hooray! Doraemon wins!

Note that it’s the collection for first grade readers, and the cover should look like this:

Bookwalker
Amazon
Rakuten/kobo

Also, I seem to have lost my regular status so if someone could edit the title to Reading next: Doraemon that would be appreciated! I’ll get the home post updated today too.

I checked both links, and it looks like I have the level 22 version of the Doraemon book. Is it the same as the nominated book, so I can use to to read along with the club, or should I get the nominated level 17 book?

Actually just read this one a few weeks ago - I personally found it to be a bit of a frustrating read (and I imagine other WK users will too) as there are so many words that you likely know in Kanji form already that you’ll encounter in hiragana in this version. Makes it very hard to parse initially, but it’s probably good practice! As such I’ll probably be joining the BBC instead this time around, but hope you all enjoy and I’ll probably pop my head in now and then for some of the chapters I struggled more with

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but I believe they are entirely different. The 一年生 book is a collection of easier excerpts from the ドラえもん manga

This is correct. I own both, and they definitely contain different chapters. The graded one that we’ll be reading is, unsurprisingly, a much easier read.

Excellent! I already own this one but haven’t finished it so it will be a nice read along

Hello, never used the jp site of bookwalker, can i use EU currencies to buy it and read it online normally?

Yes, as long as your bank allows the transaction that is (I’ve had a few issues with my Portuguese card in the past).

Hello.

I want to join on December 14th with the Doraemon manga. How much it is 825 yen on US dollars? Is it accurate the information on Google which says that it’s about 5-6 dollars?

Thanks in advance.

Uh, yeah. There’s no particular reason for Google to lie, in this instance at least.

You’ll likely also have to pay shipping, though.

I’ll stick with the digital version.

Thank you for your reply!
