Absolute Beginners Book Club // Now reading: Horimiya // Reading Next: Miss Shikimori is not just cute!

I had been side-loading books for a while until I realized I strongly prefer reading japanese stuff on my phone anyways. It’s a lot snappier and for manga it’s easy to zoom in and out. It might be worth keeping the desktop or mobile app signed in to your jp account and actual kindle on eng.

Thanks for letting me know about this work around and the heads up on the quality! I’ll probably just use my JP amazon points to buy the physical ABBC books then!

And thanks for this review also! Was seriously considering signing into my JP account on Kindle until you and Gorbit’s reply.

I plan on joining the challenge with the next manga, Ruri Dragon, and I’m searching for it now. I see on amazon that there is only one volume. Does this include all the 6 chapters which have been released so far?
Also can you download the manga from bookwalker to use them on a kindle? I had to use a vpn with mine to download the ruri dragon sample from the built-in amazon store and i would really like to avoid locking myself into depending on a vpn subscription, so bookwalker sounds like a good choice if i can download those and use them on whatever device.

Bookwalker is locked to you reading on your desktop or phone through their website or their own app. So no, you can’t transfer them to kindle, unfortunately.

That’s a shame… Do you (or does anyone) know any service that allows me to download the manga?

You should be able to use Japanese Amazon without any VPN, as long as your address is set to a Japanese address. That’s at least my personal experience, buying some ebooks from there not too long ago

this comment thread on reddit says that amazon does something (?) if it detects you’re not in japan. i see honto.jp being recommended for digital manga, posting 2 comments below to save you a click

After something like five ebooks you have to start using a VPN or juggle new accounts

They detect after a while if you’re not buying from within Japan. Supposedly some folks haven’t had issues with this, but I’m guessing purchasing printed books and having them sent overseas is a big flag. Same thing happened to me, so I only use Amazon.jp for printed stuff now. Instead, I use honto.jp for digital. Haven’t had any complaints about their app.

does anyone have any opinion/advice about that?

We talked about this a tad bit earlier. Once in a while Amazon will check if you’re still in Japan and lock your purchases until you are. This can easily be circumvented by using a crappy free vpn. It’s also very random, when this happens. I haven’t had one for at least the last 20 books I’ve bought.

Really makes you wonder … What on earth does amazon have to gain by preventing people outside Japan from buying Japanese e-books??

They don’t gain, they lose less. When amazon starts selling a product, the author gives them a license to do that. However, this license is only for Japan. A worldwide license would cost more, but for for example English speaking books, amazon is willing to shill that out, because it’s probable that someone from other countries might read that book. Not so for Japanese.

When is Ruri Dragon actually starting? I might jump in on this one.

Usually clubs start 2 weeks after the previous one finished, so the 18th most likely

I looked at the date, saw that it’s the 18th, and I decided that mentioning the month is most likely pointless, since it’s not today.

There’s definitely a point. Maybe someone forgot they were supposed to start the thread this month. Maybe it’s March. :slightly_smiling_face:

Out of curiosity, is there anything that makes it clear when a new book club’s home thread should be created by? Offhand I don’t see anything in the first post of this thread, nor in the tips thread.

No, there isn’t a rule for it or anything, strictly speaking.

Personally, I like to have it up as early as possible to try and drum up interest in it for those who might not frequent this particular thread, but it’s really up to the host.

I would say within two weeks or so should be the absolute latest, though, imo.
