I’m halfway through volume 4 (past the big reveal regarding a certain character), and while going through volume 1 for those screenshots, I saw a scene I’d forgotten about that ties in with the big reveal. Very much glad I saw it, and now I probably need to flip through the first couple of volumes in case I forgot about any other foreshadowing.

I see what you’re saying! I went back and checked the previous ties. The first 2 ties had a drop in participation for the second club. However, the second two ties actually had an increase in participation for the second club. There was a large drop for the hunter x hunter/ cells at work tie, but that I believe is probably due to Hunter x Hunter being too difficult for the club, which caused more people to stop reading. So, we can’t say across the board that two picks in a row is good or bad.

There’s a fairly large group that’s voting on these picks, as well, so I think the situation you outlined with your book club (75% of the members left) is a little less likely, since we’re not working with 8 people but 100-200.

I think for now we will keep the tie as it is, but I’ll check the participation numbers for both clubs when they happen, and if there’s a sharp dropoff in participation then that might warrant changing the tie rules. But if they have roughly equivalent participation then I think it should be fine.

Thanks for raising this issue though, I’ll keep it in mind if we have another tie.

So I was scrolling through the top post on this thread, and misread The Wolf Of The Small Forest, which put this image in my mind, so now I have to inflict it on you:

What happened in “the incident” ?

This club, which is for absolute beginner readers, voted for Hunter × Hunter, a manga that is considered L29 on Natively (a website that compares the difficulty of media for language learners). Usually we read L15 to L22 here; L29 is wildly above the usual difficulty. It didn’t go particularly well.

What’s worse, that vote was tied with an L28 manga of all things, so after that L29 was done, an L28 was read.

edit: I removed a sentence that I think I might be misremembering, and I wanted to add what @mitrac remarked in the answer: Natively wasn’t much used at the time, so it wasn’t immediately clear to everyone what kind of trip they were embarking on.

Hunter x Hunter / Cells at work lore

this was early days for me here, but I vaguely remember that Natively was pretty new at that time and I don’t think these were rated on Natively yet right? (there is no mention in the nominations or the polls, we were relying on the WK difficulty poll at the time which wasn’t really useful as newbies almost never voted). So I don’t think everyone realised how much harder these were at all. There was just a big discussion about needing to get more nominations for the next vote, but I think the fallout happened in the first few weeks of both clubs when everyone was like, ooops (and then again ooops). Edit: I didn’t join the clubs, though, and perhaps closer to the time approaching the club, is when the discussion happened about trying to stick with it and see how it goes? Next edit: yep, Tobias found it below, the issue was highlighted on the HunterXHunter club page (before the club started)

Luckily ChristopherFritz delivered on this promise

And we got the 小さな森のオオカミちゃん club, phew.

Maybe Manga Kotoba will reach a day when it can be useful as a second opinion:

I wasn’t too involved with the club during that time, so I admit that everything I’m writing is from a retrospective lens.

From what I can see, Natively gradings were there (you can sort them by recency and check the earliest), just the belief in them was pretty weak at the time. E.g.:

And Natively gradings weren’t used for the polls yet. I’m really glad they are now; it’s so much better this way.

I edited my original post to be a bit clearer.

Thank you for the explanation.
Nice avatar btw.

oh good find, I didn’t know that was possible, neat! I’m so surprised that didn’t come up during the polling (but I guess we were all still getting used to what x Natively level even meant…) so I assumed since the issue was discussed more after it was chosen maybe the rating hadn’t even been available. I edited my post too for lore accuracy

That’s so funny that the same club read HUNTER×HUNTER and ちいさな森のオオカミちゃん :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

I created the thread for A Sign of Affection. According to the poll results we’ll read it after Scary Stories, so it’s a ways out still.

Also, I’ve set up a schedule poll. Please vote on the schedule, even if you’re skipping this book, because the length of the schedule affects when we start A Sign of Affection.

Edit: Can’t post again but please vote in the second schedule poll if you’re planning on reading with us:
