A new native Android app

I released a new update today – version 1.19.797.

What’s New

  • Adaptive UI layout for settings
  • Themed icon is now used when set
  • Subjects in lessons queue are now clickable
  • Access token can now be edited in account settings
  • Other fixes and enhancements

Themed icon

If you have enabled “Themed icons” on your device, the app’s icon should match the theme colour like other apps.

You can now update your access token in Account Settings which previously you had to logout to change it.
The settings screen should now look more like other parts of the app in the sense that the top app bar is now shown allowing you to search, go to profile or browse.
The subjects in your lessons queue are now clickable allowing you to jump to a particular subject’s slide content.

I see a little bug. When practicing extra study items from the wanikani website. Lets say you have 300 burned items in there, if you study 5 and then go back to home, you can continue with the remaining 295, but on this app it reverts back to 300 in that same order when you hit home in there. Quite inconvenient as I just lost a progress of around ~60 that I did.

Also lets say if you did 5 extra study for burned items on wanikani website, it will say like “295 of 300 Burned Items left”. But if you refresh in the app, it still says 300. Maybe it doesn’t sync properly with wanikani?

Is this a known issue?

It is not a bug and it wasn’t implemented to track what you do on the website. It doesn’t keep track of the subjects you have done so you lose progress on returning to the dashboard.

Is there any way to make it track progress like wanikani website? could be nice if something like that is possible

Tracking the website does not seem like it’s doable, but the behaviour can be mimicked in the app. However, it’s not a priority of mine at this time.

Nah not tracking the website, but more like not losing progress when going back home? Completely understand if thats not a priority right now as well.

@gokuKaioKen the kanji stroke drawing you requested is implemented and will be available in the next update (hopefully). Here is recording of it:

It is clickable such that doing that restarts the animation if it was not already animating.

I released a quick fix update earlier today version 1.20.813.

This update contains the following changes:

  • Quick peek widget can now be clicked to open app
  • Clicking the subject meaning in the Word of the day widget now opens the app
  • Bug fixes and enhancements

There is a high chance this update will break the quick peek widget because of a breaking change in a dependency. If you experience this, the best course of action is uninstalling and reinstalling the app.
The quick peek widget is broken unfortunately and should be fixed in the next update. Sorry for any inconvenience.

2 things that I wish were currently possible:

  1. While doing the reviews, I wish I could go back to home menu and then be able to resume the session and continue where I left.
  2. while doing reviews, would be nice to still have a search functionality on top like how we have in smouldering durtles, to look something up quickly without having to go back home.

Another thing I noticed, and pardon me if this is just me saying dumb stuff. But it says that I am done with today’s lessons, I don’t care about that, I want to keep going if I can. Like how in smouldering durtles, you can keep doing new lessons as much as you want. I know it has an advanced option in there where you can cook up a batch, not sure if thats the same thing?

The Wrap Up feature should help with this a bit.

This is not available in the web app so was not implemented. Besides having the ability to search would just be a way of cheating.

The number of lessons you are allowed to do in a day is determined by your maximum lessons set by you. This can be changed in settings.

This app has been built with the website in mind. It is not trying to be or copy another existing app but the website.

I mean sure, but what difference does that make? if someone wants to cheat, they can just go back home and look it up?

Thats fine, but whats the harm in having features that make it better or easier? thats the whole point of this app? else everyone would just use the website, I actually want to see this app become more better and usable so I can use it every day. The reason I keep bringing up smouldering durtles is not to throw a jab at you but because some features in there are actually good. Another example would be having that dashboard to see your progress in terms of Joyo kanji or JLPT. I always keep an eye on it and would love it in the app.

How does that work? I don’t see an option for anything for it.

It makes a difference in the sense that you have to go back home to do the search which means you leave doing your reviews. That inconvenience of going back and forth acts as a deterrent (of course there are other ways to cheat.)

I am not sure what you meant by “usable” – have you been unable to use any of the features the app provides without a hitch?

I am not sure how to reply to this but let me say more features will be added eventually.

You can use it during your reviews. It can be activated using first button with the clock – it lets you take up to 10 reviews you have partially answered.
