A modern, zero-setup alternative to Yomichan (audio on all entries, pitch Info, study stats, 1-click add to flashcards, modern UI)

Hi WaniKani Community!

I’ve been working on my extension, Clyda, for the past 6 months. It’s a Yomichan-style scanner, but my goal was to make it a beautiful, seamless experience that requires no manual set-up.

Features:

  • :sparkles: Zero Setup

  • :speaker_high_volume: Audio for Everything

  • :computer_mouse: 1-Click Save, 1-Click Start Study

  • :open_book: Clear conjugation explanation

  • :artist_palette: Modern & Clean UI

I’m really excited to share something I built as a Japanese learner myself. You can grab it on the Chrome store (works on most browsers):

Would absolutely love to hear what you all think. All feedback (good or bad) is welcome.

Thanks!

Thanks for sharing :durtle_hello: Looks modern, indeed!

What dictionary is this based on? I use yomitan with quite a few dictionaries installed. I get the impression Clyda doesn’t have entries from Jitendex.

For example it doesn't recognize any of these words. One of my vocab decks on jpdb.

Edit: Oh? Actually, it’s having trouble scanning those words in the first place. It could be the furigana on jpdb interfering.

Any plans on having JP monolingual definitions?

Yes! Japanese Monolingual dictionary is definitely in the plan but it requires much more effort to compile one because there is no good option that would allow me to bundle it with the extension(would require license), so it would probably take a while.

Currently the English to Japanese dictionary is JMDict with many modifications I added like pitch accent information and audio.

Also, for the question on recognizing those words it is most likely the furigana interfering, for example, here is the extension scanning 清栄:

Anyways, thanks for the feedback! really appreciate it.

Looks great! The conjugation explanation seems to be a big upgrade over Yomitan, defenitely switching over to using this. thx for sharing

I have a question, is the algorithm of the study session in Clyda the same as Anki’s?

We use a very similar algorithm but modified to maximize the cards learned, the ordering the cards you already reviewed is also different

Your tool looks nice but sorry it looks hilarious to see two accounts level 1 who joined almost the same day with no other messages talk to each other like it’s not the same person

I think having easier to setup Yomitan alternative is long overdue, curious how this will progress overtime

Thanks for the feedback! I’ve always thought that was long overdue too hence me making this, let me know if you have any questions! (also I don’t have a second account but I can see how that makes a lot of sense lol)
