Well no, top left is a reference to her being hopelessly outmatched by the guinea pig, the hamster only appears in the bottom right, but I imagine that’s more an issue with those animals looking very similar than with Japanese!
It is indeed a reference also, yes, well-spotted. Specifically to Street Fighter 2. (looking for pixiv dictionary results when searching for a phrase like this virtually always pays dividends. It is extremely handy for this kind of a situation.) It’s a famous quote from Guile’s win screen, saying like roughly (my localization) “You’d best head home. Think of your family…” like said in a really cool way where he’s casually hugely disrespecting his opponent as a fighter while also coming across as coldly sincere in looking out for them.
(I don’t think it’s at all famous in English; it’s just an incidental bit of dialogue. Just one of those cases where that little bit of extra evocativeness in the original phrasing that made people reference it couldn’t survive translation)
(incidentally, only mentioning just since it’s a tough to look up or even really notice grammar point that’s super useful so in case it’s handy to you or someone else reading this, note that with this かえるんだ he’s telling his opponent to 帰る as in “んだ For Commands” here)

That the person she’s talking to is in this case the 巨大な生き物 is presumably why it’s phrased with that specific level of vagueness…

Yes, based on the memorial items at the spot and his turning himself in to the police at the end, I would say that person definitely died. The protagonist probably didn’t know that himself until seeing the flowers and tributes there.
I don’t… really want to research about whether it’s a thing that really happens, but I guess anything is possible when it comes to accidents involving human heads and pavement! I assume it was a crash and a clunk and the protagonist probably ran away while the victim was clearly hurt and groaning but could otherwise be fine, and then felt guilty about it enough to lay low and for the events for the story to take place.
… I suppose come to think of it if he had known he killed someone at the time he probably wouldn’t have been in the mood to try to casually order a visit from a call girl… So I suppose the story needs an accident violent enough to be a major point of guilt regardless but ambiguous enough to have a delayed reveal in just how serious it is. So maybe hit and run with a bike that ends up fatal in a freak accident sort of way threads that needle?

Even when they started talking about hamsters and from what they were saying it was clear that the hamster was something else I just glossed over it like … Yeah, hamster / guinea pig, potato potahto. So thanks for straightening me out on that one.

Yeah, I was hesitant to even pose the question honestly, but you’re right and also the illustration of the accident clearly shows the jogger clutching his head …
This observation makes the story make a lot more sense to me. I think unfortunately the creator didn’t do a great job showing that this was the case. The protagonist’s reaction to seeing the flowers didn’t seem strong enough to denote that he had suddenly realized he had killed someone. And the general tone was so light, with very little (if anything?) letting you know that the stakes had changed once he saw the flowers and tributes. Thus leading to just a general sense of confusion upon finishing the story.

Yap I think so. They use it a lot in Keep Your Hands off Eizouken but I take it there as illustrative of those characters’ specific personalities (a deferential creative and the canny capitalist she’s sort of joined at the hip to). Since this is a background character, I assume it’s more keying off of Kunijima’s vibe here. He can be a bit えらそう…

鬼ヶ島ニュージェネレーション (issue 96)
He’s complaining about like, his conservative oni values being supplanted. “I always looked up to that (野蛮) kind of oni (and it made me who I am)… it’s you lot who have been pampered and yet (look how the culture’s been upended)”
is how I interpret it anyway. Not 100% sure because of the してた instead of something passive…
You know it could maybe be like, “And we pampered the hell out of you too and yet (look how you appreciate it)” as in like, the warfaring oni were really nice to the ones lower on the totem pole. That interpretation probably has legs actually since it plays into the joke of the panel (that what he saw as being nice wasn’t so nice to them).
I assume from the sense of like - 8 in turns of phrase like this is the standard number for like, all directions (like for one example that made its way all the way into English, in the game name “Octopath Traveler” - sounds bizarre in English but from a Japanese perspective as a cool-sounding English title it’s going for like, a traveler who wanders all paths, while also tying into the gameplay), so 八つ当たり conjures the image of like, someone lashing out in all directions, hitting everyone who happens to be nearby. (I didn’t pick a specific source to back this up, but it does seem supported searching a little for “八つ当たり 語源”
It comes up often enough in this story that チヤホヤ is sort of more a special vocabulary for the setting than anything, and I’m a little too tired/tipsy right now / skimming too much through the story to decide whether I think it’s sincerely talking about his good treatment on oni island or ironically his bad treatment or both, but it’s like roughly “you know, just to mention, but on human island there won’t be anything like the kind of special treatment I got on oni island”
五木田くんスローバック (issue 96)
I don’t think you particularly missed anything, I think it’s just not very clear!
As far as I can tell, I think probably it’s meant to be still the mistake of typoing his professor’s name in the presentation. Like the protagonist is in too much of a hurry to heed his friend pointing that out and badgers him into just helping him prepare documents to go do the presentation, and so the cockroach adopts further matters to interrupt it, since I guess screwing up your professor’s name (in what seems like some kind of thesis presentation type of thing?) would be a worse faux pas than freaking out and clonking your head when interrupted by a bug… I guess. So the friend comments that, being aware that it would be a disaster if the presentation went through as-is, and now having seen a cockroach intervene to avert it twice.
Seems like a bit of a stretch but what can you do!
