ことり文書 was too cute this time

spoilers that I couldn't help capturing because it was just so cute

⭐️ 夜の名前を呼んで

I have been reading 夜の名前を呼んで with the club, so I’m far ahead of this point by now, but here’s a two-page illustration that was fun to revisit.

₊ ⋱ 新連載 ⋰₊ キラキラとギラギラ

At last, I get to experience this series that I’ve been seeing mentioned over and over again for a while now!

THIS FONT!
I really appreciated this font. (Might need to zoom in to get the full experience.)

XDDD

Intriguing!! This one feels somehow like it could become a comfort read …

恋の絶望進行曲

It dawned on me that the title of this one sort of indicates it might not have a happy ending? I don’t know, but somehow the tone and art style seem like they are saying it will have a happy ending? I admit I did read this chapter less attentively than the previous one.

Okay, cute:

✧ — ✧読切✧— ✧1.79

This one was beautifully moody. All the facial expressions and the scenery felt really significant. It just felt … masterfully done. (And I hesitate to use such strong language but honestly can’t bring myself to say anything “weaker” than that.)

₊ ⋱ 新連載 ⋰₊ 八百万黒猫速報

Eep! I almost skipped this thinking it was the 陰物語 one (there’s two more kanji in there that I can’t remember which).

COOL ↓

I like how it’s all dramatic and cool … and then sometimes just goofy. :joy:

spoilery stuff

So wait, do those eyes mean this person is also a 妖魔!?? (Or is it just like “FYI, this person is kind of a crazy person”?) Also, what’s the difference between a 妖魔 and a 妖怪? It seems like they are maybe synonyms but the former is more “Meiji era coded” or something?

↑ So cool!!

↑ This is how I feel too. I’m definitely gonna post this in my study log at some point.

COOL ↓

Finding this one definitely hard to follow, but hanging in there. Also this first chapter was really long. It took me several days, and even then by the time I got close to the end I was running out of steam. But, as you can probably gather from the fact that I took a gazillion screenshots, I really like the art! And the main character.

猫のまにまに

Ehehe. This one was fun. I like the new character.

So … do regular cats turn into nekomata? How does that process go, I wonder …

Some general Harta musings

I got a bit antsy and read ナッちゃんのテンション and 猫のまにまに in one go. It’s like the only way I can exist in relation to Harta is to be incredibly impatient to move forward or to move at an absolutely glacial pace. If I’ve tasted the sweet nectar of finishing an issue recently then I desperately want another taste. But my reading is not so strong that I can zoom through hundreds of manga pages in a day like a certain Bidoof I know of … Augh!

⚡📚 鬼はよく燃えているか

So I guess the grand prize winner of the 八咫烏杯 gets printed alongside the regulars in the magazine! That’s cool. This one definitely felt like it was at a professional level, and I thought the concept and execution were interesting. I still skimmed a lot though. :see_no_evil_monkey: It was a little above my level for a yomikiri. I still managed to mine a few kanji from it though!

Making :high_voltage::books: my symbol for “would reread”. xddd

魔法少年マモル始まらない!

Weird one! By the same person as Hinamatsuri? Which I think is quite popular? Didn’t do much for me one way or the other so far, but I did think this panel was funny.

✧ — ✧読切✧— ✧母と呼ばないで (lots of spoilers)

Another 八咫烏杯 winner! This one was short and … odd. Due (partly) to the font used in the class list, everyone thinks/wants おかはじめ's name to be pronounced おか, thus making her おかあさん. She is drawn throughout the story to look like a child version of the mom from あたしンち.

But she wants to be seen as a *.'✦ Girl -: ✧, so she makes a secret instagram account and posts sexy pictures.

Bunny does not approve.

Then her classmates find out that she is the one behind the sexy pictures! They don’t shame her for it, but at first they can’t believe it’s her because basically “mom’s can’t be sexy”. But then one nice boy is like “I believe it!” And the main character transforms into her regular girl self.

So I guess my main question is … is this … realistic? Because if so, it’s kind of sexually liberated? Or maybe this is just the way the mangaka would like the world to be? I don’t know, but it certainly made me wonder. So, good job, weird short yomikiri!

先生、今月どうですか (spoilers)

Wow, okay, all of a sudden I have SO MANY thoughts about this one! I thought I kept reading it mostly because I like the fashion bits, but I realized that the way Murasaki is growing up is very similar to the way that I grew up. Although I wasn’t so much providing child labor the way that Murasaki is. But I grew up in a house with many rooms which were rented out to various tenants. Our tenants/housemates weren’t quite as glamorous as these ones, but fulfilled comparable roles at times. Like, there was one really cool lesbian couple who stayed a while, one of whom taught me some guitar and gifted me a guitar she found in a dumpster or something. It had a hemp leaf plastered onto it with packing tape.

Also, there was our equivalent of Suwa-san – the grandmotherly older woman with a lot of hobbies (painting, cycling, yoga, theater) who, when she was younger, ran with a rough crowd and went to jail and had (which is how I found out of course) prison tattoos on her hands. Her past never caught up to her and tried to strongarm her into anything though, so I never had the opportunity to face down the yakuza. :joy:

But also … I had the experience of being the teenage landlord’s daughter who ended up dating the older man tenant too, and let me tell you that is NOT as empowered an experience as this manga wants you to think it is. Of course, this relationship is being portrayed with Murasaki as the pursuer, and the tenant as being clueless (and Therefore Not a Predator). … It’s just that I find that extremely hard to buy. No amount of predestination, or admiration, or anything can convince me that their relationship wouldn’t be highly problematic.

But at the same time, I do really appreciate how much character building is being put into how strong-willed and brave and adult Murasaki is.

So, I’ve come up with a solution. :joy: I’m just headcanoning that Murasaki is in her third year at college. Scratch that, the third year of her PHD program. Yeah, that feels okay. He probably moved in when she was working on her Master’s degree. This is fine. Everything is fine now.

↑ Had to save this adorable moment.

ホテル

Very sweet chapter with regards to Jun’s growth and confidence. ^^

I think it actually requires an insane amount of strength to do this. I’m pretty sure I tried once.

Me taking a picture of a drawing of a picture being taken.

Cute.

クプルムの花嫁

Aww! Another slice of life series with a sweet chapter with lovely character growth in this issue! Rock on, issue 91.

あかねさす柘榴の都

Wow! I love the art in this one more and more all the time.

This chapter’s educational moment:

ようこそうにんげん

This one is super silly and cute. But sometimes it gets a little tooo silly, even for me. This issue’s chapter lost me partway through.

But this was cute. I like the heart-dakutens.

✧ — ✧読切✧— ✧まさるくんの言う通り

Cute ショートショート from the maker of ことり文書.

Entering the final chapters of this issue ...

I just have two regular chapters left, then 4 Yatagarasuhai chapters! I looked ahead and scoped out the previews for next issue and looks like there are four more interesting-looking series starting! I should develop some symbols for yomikiris and 新連載 …

Gave it a shot … not sure it makes things more readable though … Maybe it would be better if it went after the title? That’s an experiment for another day though.

Aaaah! Just making the post as a draft and then commenting again when it’s done is even better than my notion thing, I will probably steal that idea from you! :star_struck:

 I stole it from the genius @soggyboy! Hehehe.

Oh, then thank you @soggyboy for the original idea! I must’ve missed it (or forgot!) when you posted it because I know I already enjoyed reading through your Harta impressions.

Oh man, I can’t even start thinking about Harta Alta right now because I have enough to do if I ever want to catch up to the publishing schedule of regular Harta :joy:

:joy: I hope my reactions don’t disappoint. I do enjoy coming across wild series or series that I would hate, just adds a little spice and extra flavor to the exploration.

I also hope to get there later this year! You’re making some good progress!

I don’t think I announced it, I just started posting half finished drafts because I was impatient and wanted my comments to be in the thread right away :face_with_steam_from_nose: Then I reply when I’m done with an issue so anyone who might have read my first couple of impressions can check the rest, or people can also just wait until I’m done and read the whole thing at once. Maybe I’ll add an ‘in progress’ line to my draft posts from now on, much to think about

And thanks! I’m reading all of your posts when I finish an issue too, it’s nice that there are comments already in the club to read back on :slightly_smiling_face:

Waver(s) started today

Pretty strong first chapter, very interested to see where it goes so I intend to follow it as it comes out. The main character’s power should be pretty interesting for a murder mystery story

Would anyone else be interested in following it and discussing as the chapters come out? If so I can make a thread or something (since I imagine people might not want it all going in this thread)

I’ll be reading it of course, and I think it’s a very promising start!
I probably won’t have anything in particular to say about it on a chapter to chapter basis though, and I wouldn’t say that I have a strong feeling at all about this thread vs. another thread, etc.
The kind of unique situation of the Harta Alta structure in terms of it being free and easy to follow if you get in from the start and keep up with it, but otherwise being all but exclusively necessitating getting the collected volumes, certainly makes it tempting to want to push anyone at all curious into reading it when there’s a nice on ramp like this, and maybe informs how exactly to handle it if you do want to read it with people in one way or another, I dunno.
Which I guess is just to say that if you do rally some people into reading it one way or another, I think that’s cool!

Thanks for the reminder! I’d be happy to follow it here or in a new thread, whatever you prefer!

希釈王

Currently my favorite series and a new heart breaker for not having a translation I could gift my mother in law :joy:

首のすわらない大人たち

Safe to say this one wasn’t very popular? Couldn’t find much about it… Neither about the author. Seems like they only do shorts for Harta? It didn’t fully land with me, but it stood out, so I was interested in other works by the author. I think they do make an reappearance in Harta again in later issues, so I am keen to see how the author will evolve.

生き残った6人によると

Now that there’s an offshoot for the new series of this author, I wonder if it fixes the issues I have with 生き残った6人によると? There’s nothing wrong with it, but it is just somehow boring to me and I can’t really put my finger onto why. It often ends with a plot twist and/or cliffhangers but I am never really interested how those will unfold. It’s slice of life parts are not really as heartwarming or touching as for example ホテルメッツァペウラへようこそ and the plot twists aren’t making me go “woah, I wonder how this will unfold!” like アビスアジュールの罪人 does. I am also not huge on zombie settings, so maybe that also plays into it. I love all the characters and the art style, but outside of the first chapter there hasn’t been a chapter that really grabbed me after that one.

ビンタ屋さん

This left a knot in my stomach. But in a good way. I am not okay with how it resolved, but I like sometimes reading things about stuff that just make me feel bad. Kinda reminded me of how I felt when I first watched 惡の華, but I thought ビンタ屋さん somehow did it better.

general musings

skipping / skimming more series

I decided to skip and skim read more things, even though it feels a bit like a waste, but there’s no reason to force myself through stuff that doesn’t really grab me. In this volume for example 生き残った6人によると suffered the skim read and アンリの靴 suffered from a straight skip. There’s nothing wrong with both of those and both had, in my opinion, very strong first chapter(s). Which is why it’s probably a bit harder to let go. I guess if my Japanese comprehension level was as good as my English / German I would still read through them, but when there’s some greater mental effort needed to get through them, it’s honestly nicer to just skim / skip them completely, in my opinion. I hope at some point when Japanese will feel more effortless, I can get back to my Hartas and rediscover some of those series!

finding balance / going low effort

From now on I also will add way less notes than before. I stopped commenting every chapter that I read a while ago, but I still tried to comment most I read. There are always a few chapters that are really good and moved me but I just don’t have anything to say about them, but I still wanted to write something to show my appreciation, like in this Harta it was probably stuff like 夜の名前を呼んで or あかねさす柘榴の都. But now I rather wanna focus on the few that I have something to say about and stop forcing me to squeeze out a more focused impressions list, because that is just not sustainable for me. (And surprisingly, kind of what lead to my long Harta break! Writing the comments started to feel like homework and now I think I found a good balance with keeping my post so low effort it is fun to write down my Harta impressions again.)

Summary

サバイバルお見合い

TIL 金魚のフン. What a word! I don’t think we have anything as drastic for the same thing in German. And is there even one that comes close in English?

アンリの靴

This chapter pulled me right back in. :sob:

Glad to see some love for 希釈王! I love that weird little series.
If you want any more from them to not be able to share, The author under another name (オイル富) has a cute essay comic about adopting a beefy stray cat coming out in February,
野良猫ごんた、家猫になる. They posted a lot of material along that line on twitter and bluesky and it’s pretty fun.

The cover to 87 stands out in my memory since I had a bookwalker tab open to it for ages when I was translating 海はいかない to share, and was planning to maybe translate ビンタ屋さん the same way for a long time (but I think I never quite got around to it)…

Ooof that’s right up my alley too, thank you for sharing that! I immediately also followed them on bluesky and am delighted to have already spotted a picture of the cat that is featured in the mentioned essay comic on there.

I also liked that one quite a bit, btw! How was translating it?

It was my first time doing something like that (this would have been around 4 years ago), and I remember it being difficult and deceptively super time-consuming, but I enjoyed it a lot! And it was certainly rewarding - the people I thought would like it who I wanted to share it with all liked it, and it contributed to being especially interested in the author’s work, which worked out when she quickly followed it with another short and an ongoing series.
At the time I went as far as to use my tablet to erase the original dialogue in the balloons and write my translation into them, which was pretty fun. But now when I want to translate something to share (which is not actually that often, but I did do it the other day to share a story I liked in a different magazine for a friend’s birthday) I just make a .txt file with the translation ordered out by page, panel etc. which seems to be readable enough and saves a lot of time and trouble.
I do recommend it in general as an activity to do, incidentally! It’s fun and rewarding.

You’re really motivating me to start translating as well! Although I am pretty sure I don’t understand everything that’s going on 希釈王, but I guess translating could solve that in that I had to really start digging into the source material to create a translation

I’m very happy to hear that! Please do feel free to ask any questions or raise any tricky bits here! I arguably have kind of a lot of translation editing experience at this point from the pro wrestling thread  and there’s no kind of question I like better trying to answer!

I will mention just in case - if I remember right, 希釈王 later on does get a little more intense in its subject matter than you might expect, in a way involving animals (a multi-part story involves dog abuse via neglect is the closest I can phrase a warning not remembering the details that well). Probably nothing really requiring a warning, but I’m only mentioning since I know some animal lovers want to avoid any depictions like that at all, or at least not be taken by surprise by them, and if that’s the case for you I’d hate if it came as a shock after sinking a lot of time into translating the early chapters.

Just finished with Harta 75 - added impressions/thoughts for everything I read (I only skipped maybe 2). I’m trying not to be too picky with the early issues to get a wider impression of what’s going on and then as I continue I can see about whittling down to the stuff I like the most

I’ll make a new post later for 76

鬼はよく燃えているか (non-spoiler reply to Mara's post about 91 which I peeked at)

Small correction - I believe that badge is conveying that the author (of this new piece) previously was one of the winners of the first 八咫烏杯 (with a different piece), as can be verified here. So this is a full-fledged 読み切り, not a contest entry. (In the years that follow of course, many more stories and series from contest-winners of the various 八咫烏杯 iterations will be advertised this same way).

Same, you read more than me though, nice! Enjoyed reading your reactions.

Fun notes! I like your standouts section :star_struck: I’m more and more inspired to just read the whole thing. Although I’ll probably go back to do that when I’m a faster reader.

昴とスーさん Subaru and Su-san

This chapter of Subaru is a tricky one to start. Interesting you had the same misunderstanding as soggy. I think I can even send the same response :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

From my Harta 75 post I link to all my notes catching up on it. I’m glad I did!
