A Dictionary of Japanese Grammar [aDoJG] 💮 Reading Club // [Currently reading the Advanced edition]

And… done!
Wow the appendices are actually super useful. Now I have a good grasp of this level of grammar, but wow if I had known about the Appendix 4 “Connection Forms of Important Expressions” earlier in my studies, I think that would have helped me a lot. And probably the Appendix 1 “Basic Conjugations”.
Maybe I will start the reading of the other two dictionaries by the Appendices, to at least try to remember that they are there.
Thanks again @MissDagger for organizing, see you in the next edition

Schedule for the Intermediate Volume

Considering the polls, I felt like the only part we’ll skip in the schedule is appendix 1, aka the one telling you how things got katakana-ized.

I could have gone with only counting the items that had the highest % (100 in this case), but it felt weird to skip something only because 1 less person voted for it or only 2 less. I guess with only 6 people voting, 2 less is a significant amount. But it wasn’t like it took me more than a couple of minutes to put together the three rows for appendices reading. And just as easily I can chop those weeks off again.

I would have put all the appendices reading in one week, since it is mostly one list after another, but it is over 100 pages so that seemed a bit excessive especially since some (all?) of those lists have sentence examples for every item.

Let me know what you think of the schedule. I think all the entries should be right. I had some incorrect counts in my initial values (from my previous post), but I think I found all that as I put together the schedule. But if anyone have some time over and not very much brain power, feel free to double check this 32 week schedule. :joy:

There might also be a small mistake in the dates, page numbers or page count. It is hard to not accidentally typo when putting together something like this.

Unless there are some fixes that several of you think is necessary. This will be the schedule and we’ll get going on January 6th, 2024. I’ll let you know closer to the time if I’ll be able to still lead this club, or if I’ll need someone else to take over.

So see you all after the new year unless something comes up (here) before then :bangbang: :confetti_ball:

Ah, we can’t read 98.23% of the book and then just not read the the remaining thirteen pages. Gotta catch 'em all!

True. xD But I am honestly not sure the appendices will be useful reading (the only reason I included them in the vote was because @Akashelia felt the appendices were useful in the basic volume). I know the appendices will be almost entirely useless for me. So they are only there since other people wanted them on the schedule. :woman_shrugging:

Appendix 1 is perhaps interesting from a language historical setting but not actually helpful for grammar, so cutting that one makes sense, and it only got 3/6 voting for it.

I know you were only joking but maybe someone else was curious about my reasoning.

Important Update

Hey, everyone. We’re getting deeper into December and I can already tell I won’t be ready to read the intermediate volume by January. I hope to finish the basic one now in December, only 3 weeks of entries left personally, but I can tell I’m not up for leading the club come January 6th.

Is there someone else willing to take over? The schedule is done. So it is “only” making the threads. If you’d continue in the vein I did the basic volume for, it is a little more finicky than a normal book club, because of the special participation/finished each week poll in each letter thread. But I think all the data for it should be in the schedule. And for the number of weeks the club covers, it isn’t that many threads.

I might have miscounted the number of entries for a week too, but if you don’t catch it yourself, someone will let you know. But I only did it once for the basic volume, so hopefully it is max the same for this one.

If someone is willing to take it over, I/we can call the mods to change the first post into a wiki. Otherwise I guess the club will be put on hiatus/delayed. But I can’t answer if I’d be available to lead the club later next year, I don’t feel able to make any such promises as of now.

I’ve been giving this some serious thought, but I’m a little unsure. Are there any tools to help plan posts or anything like that? (Beyond, you know, a calendar and text editor.)

Or maybe anyone else with some experience leading a book club can chip in with some pointers?

Somewhere there’s a list of resources for running a book club - I used it when I started running the Spy Family club. This club is slightly different in format due to being a dictionary, but I’m guessing they can be usually modified, and @MissDagger probably has some templates from the basic dictionary.

This is likely what you are referring to. It is pinned in the Book Clubs category also!

I generally don’t use tools. Beyond the tips in the thread @anon99047008 posted, I do know there are some people working on tools to automate some/all of the process of creating posts.

Me? I just go to a previous thread in the same club, usually the previous week (or in this case the previous letter thread), copy all the text, and paste it into a new topic and then make changes.

The first week of the club is usually the one that takes the longest (excluding making the club in the first place). Because that is when you look over the text, maybe make some changes to the boiler plate text that doesn’t make sense, change the cover image to the current volume. Then next time it is thread time, just copy that and tweak the specifics for the new thread such as forward and back links the reading for the week, headline and title, and in the case of this club the poll where you pick which section you’ve finished.

The good thing is that if you make a mistake someone will point it out. It isn’t anything to be ashamed of, we all do it from time to time. I somehow managed to suggest that reading page 1 to 15 was 14 pages despite that clearly being 15 without even needing to calculate it in any way. :joy:

Also, I do plan to still be around the forum, I just don’t have time to participate and leading a club I’m not participating in is not something I enjoy. Yup, tried it, mostly by accident, and can’t recommend. So I can still help as it is getting started. And definitely feel free to just take a thread from the basic volume and adapt it. I’d take one of the last threads because I think I fixed a bit of wording in it that wasn’t important enough to go back and fix in all of them.

I’ve decided to take over leading the club, if no one else has volunteered.

Fantastic!

@Mods could you please make the first post a wiki?

Happy holidays!

So I understand that I’ll need to parse up everything, but are we using this thread still as home base?

Parse? Not sure what you mean by that.

This as the home thread is fine. The first post is now a wiki so you can edit it. You’ll find a schedule for the intermediate volume up there, already worked up and approved by the group. The old schedule for the basic volume is hidden under a detail tag for prosperity.

I plan to semi-follow along for intermediate, aiming to read one grammar point daily.

I also have the supplemental activity of checking for the use of each grammar (especially ones I’m unfamiliar with) in the manga I’ve read or am reading and making web pages showing examples of the grammar used in one or two manga. (Something like this.)

This is a bit time-consuming and thus requires proper time management on my part, but seeing unknown grammar in the material I’ve read helps it stick a bit better. If I cannot find any examples, I probably don’t need to worry if I forget the grammar soon after.

I failed to follow along with the beginner dictionary because I didn’t plan for it properly. I hope to avoid that with intermediate by going through one grammar point after work each day, including checking for grammar usage in manga.

If I can work weekends into my schedule and keep at it every day, I should finish around the same time as the club.

I was totally mistaken! Oops. I see now the schedule is all ready to go. I thought I would have to look through the chapters still and plan out what to read and when. Going to have to come back tomorrow morning when the Christmas libations are completely worn off. Don’t drink and post, kids! Or lead book clubs, for that matter.

JK JK. I’m looking forward to this. I really did like reading along with the beginner volume, even though I ended up reading it out of order. I can already tell reading the intermediate volume will be better alongside the club!
