My experience is that the Dictionaries don’t cover everything that’s listed as an N3/N2 “grammar point” – they do the important and complicated ones, and what they do cover they do in a helpful level of detail, but some of the more minor stuff doesn’t have entries (or only gets brief mention in an entry for something else). For instance some lists have 別に~ない and ふりをする as “N3 grammar”, and the Dictionaries don’t have those. This is typically stuff that is more “standard expressions” than grammar, though, and it’s pretty easy to pick up.
I see. I’m going through intermediate now. So I’ll probably see what you’re saying. It’s also good to remember that there is no set list of grammar for the JLPT and it’s all a guesstimate. I’m just focusing on the stuff I’ve seen in materials geared at N(X) level.
Yeah, if you’re also doing reading and so on you’ll probably run into a lot of these anyway as you go along. Then you can just do a quick scan through one of those online lists later on to see if anything jumps out as something you don’t recognize – there’ll probably only be a few.
Thank you so much for this great book club! I’ve intended to read the book from cover to cover for ages. I’ll be reading along with everyone and will gradually catch up with older items on the same time.
And N is here. 8 entries this week:
And second N week:
And third week of N.
And last week of N, 7 entries:
New thread, everyone! O - R! I hope you all excited to start week 20 of this club.
Of course can’t wait for the offshot for the sequels
No need to make it an offshoot, because this is the Dictionary of Japanese Grammar Reading Club, not the Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar Reading Club. Important difference.
Yeah, I already planned reading the whole trilogy from the start. I’m mad, I know.
Awesome! I really do look forward to the next two volumes! I feel like my Japanese skills progress at the same pace as the Dictionary, right now Basic is almost getting too easy, soon ready for the next step!
And week 21, ending O - R, with 7 entries.
I haven’t asked this, and I probably should have considering how long this club is, but are there some of you that needs us to take a break, to have a bit of catch up?
For me personally, I’m fine with catching up on my own! The pace of the club is slow enough, even falling a week or two (or three) behind isn’t the end of the world.
But if there are others who would appreciate a break, I wouldn’t mind taking one, either! I guess I’ve sort of been taking my own breaks as-needed, haha, but my schedule is a bit unpredictable and also inflexible, which isn’t really great for planning with others .
I have had a rather terrible week so I wouldn’t mind taking a break to catch up. It’s not really a need though, the pace is fairly forgiving and I can easily catch up in an afternoon or two.
Having just finished the basic volume yesterday, I would like to report that the intermediate volume fixes one of the most frustrating parts (at least to me) about the basic volume:
no romaji! at last!
The “Special Topics in Japanese Grammar” section also had a ton of good and interesting information in it, for when you start trying to figure out the schedule for this volume, highly recommend taking the time to read it thoroughly
This post made me buy the Intermediate volume, lol. Just waiting for it now! Regardless of whether or not we do a book club, of course. I love this series as a resource.
Edit: the book club is actually for the trilogy, so uh, buckle in I guess!
As someone who has fallen behind after having exactly 1 extra thing on their plate, I don’t mind spending extra time to catch up. Not sure how much input you’ve received but I’m OK keeping with the current pace.
And now we start S! And four weeks of that. This week is 6 entries.
There seems to be a few people that are interested in a break, so I guess I should pull out the polling skills.
I will close the poll next Friday, August 25th, when I’m ready to start the next week (or not as the poll might decide!).
