I was “just slow” for a while too, until I got four weeks behind and decided to be realistic.
Good luck catching up!

For anyone who is behind, if you’re despairing too much about not being able to catch up, you could always just jump in right where we’re at now in the alphabet even if you haven’t read all the A-J entries! It’s not like it’s necessary or even intended to read this book in alphabetical order, anyway, so there’s no harm at all in skipping ahead. You can gradually catch up on the past stuff over time if you want without missing out on the current discussions.
But then how would we know who all the characters are?
I know this is a joke, but I’ve brought up so many examples of speech from pro wrestlers to provide native examples which illustrate the grammar points that regular readers of the book club posts probably do have a slight familiarity with those characters now .
This inspires me to doodle wrestlers for all the grammar points …
You are perfectly right, of course!
Still, I hope I will have caught up before I am despairing too much.
The nice thing about trying to catch up is that I have a goal I am aiming to reach.
And the start of a new week. Week 13. 8 entries this week, we’re finishing K. Next week we move on to M!
First week of the two week M is here:
7 entries this week.
It’ been awhile but I managed to catch up with the first 60 pages, the introductory part, of the dictionary and will now join the weekly threads.
I don’t know when I’ll find the time to read all the entries from “A” to “K”, but I’ll get to it eventually.
For now, though, I’ll focus on making it through the weekly assignments, ideally until the end of the book.
For anyone who have voted in the “I’ve finished these parts” of the letter threads will find that only one of their votes remains per poll. There seems to be a bug that happened with polls that all multi-vote polls (even closed ones, so all historical polls on the whole forum) have had their vote per person reduced to just 1 vote. Whether this is a displaying error so the data still exist (and can be restored) or the data is gone is currently not known (the bug struck this forum only in the last day).
So be advised that if you had finished 2/4 sections in A-E for example and was using the poll to remember what parts you had finished, currently only one of those votes will show, and I don’t know if the other vote is gone forever (so you should just go ahead and reapply it) or if it will reappear by itself when the bug is fixed.
Do note that it is still possible to lay multiple votes in polls, so it isn’t that multi-vote polls are broken (at least not all the time, who knows if this bug will keep striking…?). Which makes me suspect that the data might be lost, but that is speculation on my part.
I’ll update with new information if I get any. (Anyone else also feel free to update about it.)
We saw this on the Natively forums as well. Do you know if anyone reported it to Discourse?
WK is doing it. ABBC is currently having a vote so they let the mods know.
Brandon reported it for Natively too. Let’s hope it will be addressed.
Thanks a lot for the information! I am using the polls to track my process of catching up after having fallen way behind, and the bug would certainly have left me wondering.
Should not really matter to me here anymore, though, since I am already close. I am about to finish the last „K“ week, so will hopefully be reading along (again) next week or the week after that.
Hey everyone. Just wanted to throw in there that the shared deck for this series is SUPER nice as a companion to the book. I find myself going back and looking at grammar points I have read through but maybe missed the nuance of and just find myself really trying to understand grammar a lot more thuroughly. Anyways, keep up the good work!
We’ve gotten an update in the ABBC on polls from a mod:
Therefore, if you have voted in any polls for this club since the votes disappeared, you’ll need to go back and re-apply the votes. (Say if you finished a new section in a progress poll.)
Hopefully, this was a weird one time thing, aka that the Discourse team (the forum software if you aren’t aware) have fixed whatever bug caused the initial data to disappear.
So from now on we can expect that polls will be as reliable as usual, but I expect I won’t be the only one who’ll be keeping a closer eye for a while.
I just discovered this group and saw your reply- I am in a similar situation in that my Russian is far better than my Japanese. Studied Russian for 8 years - and now after about 30 years, have a real reason to get back to using it. Will check out the Russian grammar reference book! (and ordered the basic Japanese grammar book as well).
Second and last week of M. 8 entries this week!
“Finished” the book (I finished the flashcards and read what I needed to more in depth). I was surprised how much “N3/N2 level” grammar there was in here. Makes me contemplate even bothering with the materials for those tests since these seem to go beyond those levels. Pretty cool.
There were some grammar points I eiter needed or still need to brush up on so it was definitely worth the read through! Started the Intermediate Dictionary and while I skimmed the first part of Basic, Intermediates introduction has a lot more useful information for learners (basic covered mostly how to use and understand terms in the book). This intro seems to cover different forms (which I consider grammar) like causative, passive, etc. This one might actually have some mental roadblocks I have been trying to get through in it. Pretty excited.
Oh yeah, you mentioned having a flashcard deck for this book. Is that public somewhere that you could share?
Congrats on finishing the first volume though! I’ve also been surprised by how much harder jlpt grammar is in there though, it definitely hasn’t all been freebies.
