A Certain Bidoof's Multi-Language Travel & Friends & Sometimes Study Log 🇯🇵 🇩🇪 🇨🇦 🇵🇱

November 4th, 2025

yeah, im sorry, i only was able to read one chapter today xdd
i spent a few hours drafting and deleting the level 120 post and then i realized it’s pretty late, so this much will have to do for now ^^

but for the ones that have missed it, hey, my Level 120 post is up!

i’ve climbed the peak of the WaniKani mountain for the second time C:

it does have a face reveal, but stay assured, my human assistant will give way to the proper Bidoof pictures after this one xddd

for those that aren’t aware of how it goes, @koichi has written a very heartfelt letter, whose part looks like this:

last time I climbed the tree, I did take the advice of leaving the nest pretty literally, but right now, that I already have so many reviews scheduled for tomorrow? <looks at the widget>, 174??? No leaving the nest will be had today, I’m sorry ^^

i’m really tearing up though, what a journey has it been
and it is
and it will be.

haaaa. wanikani. what a concept, man.

now we wait for @Zakarius to also hit the level 60 mark as well C:

Life

SO TODAY AT THE OFFICE SOMEBODY HAD THE SAME LABUBU AS I DID (BUT BIGGER :eyes:) xddddd

Anyway, you have no idea how hard it is to find candles for cakes in Dublin xxddd
I know there’s a Hallmark on the other side of Liffey, but I’d have to keep going for a bit, otherwise the only other options available are like, AAAA :sob:

I was trying to look for a big “6” and a big “0”, but I didn’t end up finding anything, so I went with the sprinklers you can see in the level 120 post ^^

Our post-work dinner today took place at the Temple Bar, which, yeeeeah, that’s probably among one of the most overrated tourist traps in the world, but the Christmas lights are pretty C:

There’s a term Irish people use for people that go to Dublin to visit the Temple Bar, it’s called a “plastic paddy”? So our conversation at the dinner today drifted that way as well ^^

I had a thing called a “limenade mango”, which felt really weird to me, like what’s a lemonade from a mango??? :eyes:
But then it ended up being really disappointing, it was just a lemonade from a lime with some syrup from mango added in :sob: xddd

One of my favorite places in Dublin, which is pretty close to the Temple Bar, is the Irish Film Institute, I used to subscribe to it even when I moved back to Berlin C:
They do a lot of film festivals and show a lot of the less popular movies ^^

And yeah, after the dinner together, I just skibidid to my hotel room to write the big level 120 celebratory post today C:

Writing is cool, I should be doing that more often. Wait, I do xddd

See you tomorrow either way! ^^

oh yeah…
I keep forgetting that my forum level is not the same as my WaniKani level, but I have been level 60 for ages now (twice, since I didn’t do very well first time through - so also a fellow lv.120-anarian), I did think the level would update itself without having to log out and in again… but that doesn’t seem to be the case, and then I forget.
Though I have become kind of attached to that pinky-purple level colour

Congrats again again on reaching level 60 for a second time!! :tada:

that feels like the hidden reveal you only get at the end of the story when it turns out that one of the characters was overpowered all along but they didn’t reveal it over the whole course of the adventure xddd
wow, i bow before you xddd

on one hand, i already miss it, on the other hand, yellow fits my avatar more, im sorry :sob: xddd

November 5th, 2025

once again, only one chapter today and かぐや to me remains a bit difficult to focus on, so I haven’t done the greatest job on continuing to read today, but I’m still at an event and probably can’t focus as much on Japanese as I’d like to, also, taiyousea opened up a “”““studying””“” Discord server, so of course I had to join it and “”“study”“” xddd

I’m going to be so dead when I wake up tomorrow again ^^

Life

Still work event, still Dublin!

I found a bunch of wacky stores around the town today, like this clothes one, or a music one straight from 気になってる人 if that series had way too many funko pops ^^

Here’s full-sized Taylor! Should I grab her and take her home? :eyes:

Oh and also, I feel threatened xddd

Also, Ireland doesn’t have its manga publishing companies, so they import manga, sometimes British, sometimes American, it’s funny to observe the differences between cheaper UK manga and crazy expensive American one ^^

And I did walk to the Hallmark today! It was still open when I visited it ^^

But yeah, I had an amazing bath today after going to Lush and picked one of those and then just soaked in the bathtub for an hour and a half

Also, most of the places in Ireland are really loud, and we’ve had a dinner together in a loud restaurant today, so I still have some tinnitus in my ears ^^

Aaand we’re doing a team event in less than 8 hours, so I’m just jumping to sleep, I’ll try catching up on the forums more when I have proper time ^^

See you tomorrow!

I love Bidoof “not being caught up on the forums” is a longer post than I ever do and commenting all over other people’s logs :joy:

There is a weird muscle in my Japanese that if I listen to audio in Japanese and understand every word, it’ll just flow as if I’m listening in English, but the moment I don’t understand even a single word, my brain is like “WAIT A MINUTE” and I won’t be able to focus on the next few minutes of the recording ^^

That’s both on Satori Reader and Bite Size Japanese, but luckily the Bite Size Japanese listening I did today was one of those where I didn’t need to look up a single word, so it went pretty smoothly… I was a little bored with the content matter though ^^

The material came from the WaniKani Discord server, there’s a bot that tai set up that just sends a notification when studytubers upload something, I decided to give it a shot and it’s pretty good studying material, but I’m curious to find something that’d be personally interesting to me ^^

Anyway, Layla also does journaling and has a ton of journals:

I wonder if I were to print this thread, how many notebooks would I fit in xddd

And manga today, I’m a bit out of the train and wanted to gently get myself back into reading, I picked 最後の夏を人妻と and ugh xdddd

Good news: easy to read and got almost everything, including some words I was surprised by, bad news, it’s just generic forbidden love story heterosexual porn, I’m glad it does have some actual story at least and it’s easy to follow, but ehhhh

But it does have nuance and a few softer panels, so at least this ^^

I’ll be traveling again tomorrow, so I hope to read something a bit harder tomorrow, might be Salam Dunk, we’ll see though ^^

rats with wings asked to say hi C:

European culture pop quiz, what are those two xdd

Being in Newry on Monday, they had a bookshelf that had books anyone can take in there, and they had Intermezzo by Sally Rooney, and although I’ve read her other books, I might not exactly be a fan, so I just left the book behind ^^

Normal People is really hard to read because of the narration style and just sad people being sad, but it’s a really heavy hitter, so if any of you ever want to try to read something a bit harder that explains how Ireland works more or less, that book is an absolute treasure trove ^^

Our team activity today was VR! We went and did some shooty shoots to receive the booty from the pirate ship ^^

The bitrate was really bad though, and there was a lot of interference, so the motion sicknedd kicked in really hard, we still managed to land a ton of treasure though C:

The other group at work did a horror campaign and they actually did scream over the course of it, so good for them I suppose xdddd

After work, I decided to hit one of my favorite places in Ireland that wish were anywhere outside of it: Offbeat Donuts!

What’s so cool about them, you may ask?
They do deals with drinks and donuts for €6, that are a pretty good price, when I was still in a starving student mindset when I moved to Ireland, I’d hit them every second day and just get one of those deals ^^
White moccha is my favorite drink at them C:

The closest place in Berlin that I have right now is Comebuy bubble tea, so consider that to be the Dublin equivalent~

Dublin is huge when it comes to donuts anyway, Rolling Donut, The Hot Donut, Off Beat Donuts, there’s just a lot ^^

(@araigoshi what’s your favorite? :eyes:)

And yeah, today apparently was the biggest full moon of the year, so that’s how it looks like with full zoom, awooo ^^

So the team summit is over now and I’m starting a very slow process of getting back home which will take me until Monday, look forward to the next couple updates!

See you tomorrow!

Literally the only time I’ve bought donuts is from either Lidl because I got tempted while doing groceries, or from the offbeat donut co in heuston station waiting for a train, so I guess offbeat wins by default lol.

I’ll be in Berlin for a work event next week if you have any recommendations

The intercity trains are uhh, not quite as good. They define on time as “within 30 minutes”.

I was on the other side of that building a day earlier fretting about if my bus was actually going to turn up there lol.

Ah yeah I used to do that. I would hear a word I don’t know then loose the rest of the sentence. I think as adults we get used to understanding all the words we hear. One thing I noticed when I started teaching kids, especially elementary kids, is that despite knowing less English than adults they often understand me better. Kids have to guess a lot at what adults are saying in their native languages, so English is just the same and they don’t worry about the meaning and just guess. From an adult perspective it is super fascinating.

You can be cured though! Basically just focus on listening for ANY word you know and try to guess at the meaning through that. This may mean practicing listening to stuff that is above your level. This was a lot easier for me to achieve because I was in Japan and constantly bombarded with above level content, but perhaps you can manage in a study setting too. Basically the whole first year I felt like every sound came through terrible announcement speakers (like the ones where it sounds super garbled and you can kinda understand them). I lived my life on about 20-50% comprehension rate for quite a while lol.

I don’t know what exactly you might be in the market for, so here’s a couple different ideas ^^

Where to eat: most of my favorite places are between Hackescher Markt and Alexanderplatz, especially Angry Chicken (SO SO ANGRY!!) and Avocado Club (they make coffee with avocado. i’m not kidding.)
Also, the coolest food court of the city is called Manifesto!

Where to do window shopping: Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus, the biggest Waterstones equivalent in Berlin, it’s huge and the English speaking section is huge too ^^
Also, Mall of Berlin, the shopping mall has a lot of cute creative shops ^^

Where to find Japanese culture: Bikini Berlin, the whole shopping mall, there also is a mostly-German manga store in Alexa that’s really cool ^^

Where to find Japanese language: you don’t. There’s only one place, Neo Tokyo, that has something like 20 manga volumes, 20 artbooks and 20 issues of magazines in Japanese, but aside from that, there is just nothing

Where to learn something new: Humboldt Forum, exhibition called Berlin Global; Futurium, sick museum!

Also, make sure you check the main station out, it’s really cool! And buy your bubble tea at any Comebuy ^^

in Germany it’s 60 minutes when they finally start apologizing, ehhh xddd

it might be a bit harder for me, because currently I’m not in Japan and I still haven’t found any listening materials I’d really like, so maybe I should spend some time in December when I’m stuck at home to look for fun listening materials in Japanese, we’ll see ^^

…i think today could’ve been my single-day manga reading Personal Best so far, 832 pages xdd
If I look at Mokuro, it claims that a volume of Slam Dunk took me something like 95 minutes, so probably something like 6-7 hours of reading today (plus the regular SRSes), I had a long flight though (-2 hour timezone difference), so I could afford to read a little longer, but yeah, I should think of how to do it more sustainably or I might burn out xdd

Anyway, it was pretty fun C:

SO

Slam Dunk, I got peer-pressured to read this one and yeah, it was great xddd

I love the absolute dork character designs, whether it’s 桜木 or ハルコ xdd

There was a lot of slapstick comedy and a lot of people making fun of the others in a hilarious way, and because I could follow the story just fine, I was snorting through my nose when things were happening xdd

I think the manga might be a bit harder to me than the level 24 rating on Natively because of a TON of derogatory expressions I’m not familiar with and I feel like I had to look up stuff every few pages just not to lose the expressions, but the main thread of the story felt really easy to follow, so, Slam Dunk Fridays is real, we judo club now. Wait, it’s not a judo manga???

Also, new content update was added few days for WaniKani and it had this word:

and I was like “i’ll never remember that, this is a weird reading”, well it showed up in Slam Dunk today, so :eyes: xddd

Second up, サターンリターン:

it’s GREAT. I was so surprised by how much I enjoyed it: they baited me with a lot of long, meandering shots, which I thought would make the manga easier, but then they started shifting into really hard vocab about physiology, funerals, sexuality and all, and I was like “damn, let’s keep going” ^^

I found it doable to follow, which was pretty neat, but the illustrations were just BEAUTIFUL

it does a really, really good job at making you identify with the character emotions, especially sadness, because it does meander in a way I found similar to Sally Rooney, but I was in for the meandering, that was a very refreshing change of pace from Slam Dunk IMO ^^

I had a blast with this manga, and it’s currently free on Bookwalker for the first three volumes, I only read two so far ^^

Life

I took a short hike around the DART line in Ireland today ^^

Getting out of the train in Dún Laoghaire, it was raining the whole day, so I was stopping when I was getting too wet and going to cafes (to read Slam Dunk) xddd

Both of the places are in the metro area of Dublin, but they have their own independent culture and markings, they worship gulls for some reason as well xdd

The water levels in places were so high, that the stairs leading into a lower level were flooded already :eyes:

It’s not something that’s unheard of when it comes to Dublin though, that’s the cons of having a city right next to the seaocean ^^

Dalkey is really pretty, even if it’s tiny~

Apparently this is the place that Matt Damon settled on and bought his property in ^^

And then, had some food, went to the airport… WHATS THE DEAL WITH THIS CARROT FROM ALDI, I THOUGHT IT WAS A JOKE ON MONDAY XDDD

and set it out for…

Helsinki!

The city is already slowly getting decorated for Christmas and there’s a lot of lights around ^^

Unfortunately, I don’t have much time here, so I have to make it count, but I’ve been here before, so I’ll grab a cool breakfast tomorrow, go to a Fazer cafe and see what else I can make, before I set out to Tallinn!

So see you tomorrow~

They get better a bit further in as well when they start doing more of the funny faces and different characters like rukawa having anthropomorthic versions as animals and stuff
Does your version have the chapter intros with the little windows with drawings? They’re always great too

It’s a very nose-snorty manga
It’s just fun and then sometimes turns serious and does serious well and sometimes goes all hype sports action and does hype sports action well

The hardest part is probably Sakuragi coming up with new creative insults for every person he considers a “rival”, but the good news is that he’s not very inventive and reuses them each time, so once you look it up once you can remember it
Other characters they tend to use the same stuff over and over so I’m sure you’d probably get used to it, it’s the kind of thing which probably feels hard at the start, but if you read 15 volumes, you would think that it’s super easy

Sakuragi really loves 自ら
In multiple ways

Listening is one of those areas I keep wanting to improve and not making the routine to do it though. If I could snap my fingers and be good at listening my two go to podcasts would be そこ⭐️あに (a digest podcast about anime) and COTEN radio (multi part history podcast that covers a lot of topics). I’m sure there’s more and those might not be the best for you because tastes will vary and everything but I think they’re interesting. Though maybe I project the enjoyment of novelty for listening in Japanese and wouldn’t enjoy them as much if I understood more.

…aha. Speaking of burning out xddd

Nothing scheduled yet in terms of burning out, but I’ll probably significantly slow down next week again, the goal was supposed to be one chapter of a manga a day, so I’ll see if I can uphold it xddd

So, rapid fire:

I took a shot with そこあに, because I’m a little out of the anime market and I was curious what they’d be talking about, Zombieland Saga I was at least familiar with the premise so I checked on the episode:

It was about the movie coming to the cinemas now, and I learned a few things, but one thing I like about JELLY JELLY RADIO is even if I’m zoning out and I have no idea what they’re talking about, the hosts have a great chemistry and they bounce off of each other and it’s always fun, this episode felt like a readout of a Public Service Announcement xdd
Two guests have been invited, one would just go like うん、うん the whole episode, the other said a few sentences, but the main host absolutely was driving the show xddd

The other episode about the seasonal anime:

had a bit of a better chemistry, but I couldn’t focus on the contents because I didn’t have a reference point of what was being discussed, so I only listened to a few recommendations and nodded my head like うん、うん, at the rest of the episode xdd
Gnosia section I was a bit more in-depth in ^^

But in general, what queenofthegods said, 20-50% comprehension rate and a wide grin on my face xddd

So, 化物語!

It’s among my absolute favorite weeb intellectual properties from Japan next to Fate and 響け, I knew the manga existed and that it was drawn by a very skilled mangaka and you can see the heart in the illustrations, and some jokes are still there! This one made me snort ^^

But, I think that it’s a bit of a disservice to the series to try to condense it and to create a lore digest, especially since this is this one series that’s interesting as you go, but then when you get back to the very beginning, you can see the foreshadowing was EVERYWHERE, every few pages, and this manga doesn’t have it as much ^^

Then, 宇宙兄弟, where did that come from?
I was walking in Tallinn today and I found a manga/k-pop store that had exactly ~10 volumes of manga in Japanese, so I just decided to buy one, and I have Estonian manga (in Japanese) now xddd

Really, really engaging, heavy hitter C:
I was flipping the pages and going like “awww” C:
Biggest part is probably me being surprised at the fact that this is supposed to be level 28 manga, a physical one, and I’m like “yep, that looks like a level 28 manga, let’s read it physically regardless” xddd

Read the whole volume without a single lookup: I’m sure I must have missed a lot of things, but the BRING HER HOME storyline was getting me gripped xddd

Good stuff, it seems like me branching out to new genres is getting me into interesting places, I was really happy I found something of this caliber accidentally in Tallinn xddd

And final one,

額に角が生えるような錯覚。
背に羽が生えるような錯覚。
手に鱗が生えるような錯覚。
踝に水が満ちるような感覚。

……汗が滲む。
ザクン、ザクン、と体中に剣が突き刺さる

Now I get it why it’s level 40+ according to akatsukinoluna. it simply doesn’t make any sense xddddd

Also, @sanshoo introduced me to a banger track today:

I was walking with a suitcase today and bopping my head to this one, だよねぇぇぇ xddd

Life

Anyway, banger update today! I walked 43k steps and burnt 3900 calories today, so it was a pretty neat day C:

Hellinn… I mean, Talsinki… I mean, Helsinki and Tallinn xddd

It’s really dark in Helsinki this time of the year, I woke up and it felt like a really rainy, really dark day, even thugh it was just the usual weather outside

I found the Fazer cafe and had my Dumle bar, as promised ^^

Walked a bit, hit the city center, went to the Moomins shop, the city center malls, I think I did everything I wanted to do in Helsinki regardless ^^

I found an amusement park that’s functioning mostly over the course of the year, but as the darkness proceeds and it gets closer, the opening hours become weirder, and the final few months had opening hours between 1pm and 5pm, which is pretty unusual xdd

It closed down for winter at the end of October.

And then, I took a plane to Tallinn and wHAT IS THIS TINY AIRPLANE I CANT AAA xddd

The flight took 20 minutes apparently, Helsinki and Tallinn are really close to one another, so that warranted the small flight. I only arrived at the airport 40 minutes before the flight, so, hey, didn’t waste that much time ^^

Bit of an unpaid product placement, but I have something wild to say about the airport: they had a dispensing machine that was handing over free Revolut payment cards.
As my previous card expired and I didn’t get any new one before, I just decided to get a new one, €0.00, doesn’t have any name on it, it can be paired with an account effortlessly and… it just works???

Never seen a vending machine like this one before :eyes:

Aaand, Tallinn!

First thing to occur to me, the city acknowledges the Russian state figures that helped them regain independence… but outside of that, there are Ukrainian flags EVERYWHERE xddd

Here’s the state of the embassy of Russia, if anyone was curious xdd

There was one Ukrainian shop right next to the Russian embassy I decided to hit and buy myself a pin from, Odessa, some of the merch they prepare has been AI-generated, but hey, at least it’s something.

So back to the topic of Estonia then!

Tallinn does remind me of Poznań if it were in western Europe ^^

I found a sharky bubble tea place!

And one really cool thing: in supermarkets, they label Estonian foods, so you know you’re buying local when you’re buying things ^^

Apple of my eye, huh? ^^

I found a bookstore chain and looked at the Estonian books in there, and there haven’t been as much as I thought there would, the bookstore was split three ways, Estonian, English and Russian

Also, Russian Naruto goes hard, cc @taiyousea xddd

But there’s just no manga in Estonian at all, apparently there’s zero publishing company, so pick your poison: overpriced English or less overpriced Russian ^^

There’s a lot of lights in Tallinn at night, and it’s really pretty decorated C:

Aaand, here’s the Baltic sea! Welcome to the Baltic states!

I jumped on a bus at 8pm, after a whole day of walking and made it all the way toooo… Rīga! I’ll try to spend my whole tomorrow in there ^^

Only Rīga and Vilnius to go and I’m back to Berlin, I promise xddd

I’ll cut down on the size of the posts after I return significantly xddd

So good night and take care everyone ^^

Ofc the kanji here is hard, I had to look up 踝 because I didn’t recognise it, but the structure and grammar doesn’t seem that hard? Just kanji wall, I don’t think this bit seems like level 40+ or anything
I feel like 滲む and 鱗 and stuff are very VN-heavy kanji which you see in them much more than in other stuff, but maybe that’s just from ひぐらし tbf
