A Certain Bidoof's Multi-Language Travel & Friends & Mandarin Learning Arc (🇨🇳) 🇯🇵 🇩🇪 🇨🇦 🇵🇱

DIDN’T YOU JUST GET A NEW SUITCASE?!?

Idk about this exact train, but generally speaking the conductors have a little pouch of coins and a machine that allows you to purchase a reserved seat ticket even while on the train. At least that’s the case with the trains that run by my old house and I have done it many times, including this weekend. Either you can wait for the conductor to check tickets or go find them in the back of the train. Workers will tend to assume foreigners cannot speak Japanese/understand rules and just say something is impossible when it totally is possible, they just don’t want to explain. Not saying that’s what happened here and maybe they don’t have a little machine, but generally speaking I’ve found it to be quite possible (as someone who travels with similar passes from time to time).

That yukata suits you really well! love2

Anyway, you were wise not to bring a book into a full body onsen. I remember I once decided to take a bath while reading a book – and, despite my best efforts, in the end the book was not as dry as it was before…

Anyway, I’m very glad you are having such a nyaaaaaaaaaaaaice time – may nothing spoil it for you!
And thank you again for sharing! love2

:sob:

By there I meant in Japan :sob:

I didn’t know you also had a Garmin watch :eyes: May I ask which one you have? and how happy are you with it? I have the vívomove sports one and it has its ups and downs

Still, anything above 7 hours is “theoretically” good, but yeah, getting more sleep is something I also usually aim for :sob:

See, I wanted to ask exactly about the luggage situation for the trip home, but didn’t manage to convey that correctly  Here’s a Sakura to help you with that endeavor :cherry_blossom:

Now I get it. Thank you for the explanation :folded_hands:

I promise I don’t have many demands :sob:

I like that the sheep can wear a tie way better than me

Congratulations

A random question: May I ask what your healthy walking habits are? and do you wear specific shoes for walking? :folded_hands:

The yukata is really nice :cherry_blossom: but I can’t imagine what would happen if a bear appears and people attempting to run while wearing 下駄  I really hope that never happens :folded_hands:

Oh no :sob: I hope everything is well :folded_hands: Are they allowed to hit and run?

A Sakura to keep you healthy and safe and to keep all those bad people away from you :cherry_blossom:

a lot of cute merchandise :cherry_blossom:

A random question about the onsen: Do they usually say the water temperature somewhere?

I’m really enjoying the adventures you’re taking everyone on  especially the random people you met :cherry_blossom:

Another random question  how much does it usually cost to keep your suitcase in a safelock?

:cherry_blossom: :cherry_blossom: :cherry_blossom: :cherry_blossom: :cherry_blossom:

I didn’t dare to ask this question, but you were braver than me. :cherry_blossom:

:sob:

I don’t trust myself with anything near the water :sob:

Yikes sorry to hear about the mean car

I’m a bit late to the refuelling discussion but -

Yep, that’s a great refuelling :glowing_star:

For future reference - Bidoof only

Sugar / candy - yes terrible, so good job knowing that
Protein - meat, fish, dairy, legumes, nuts - yes important but that is something you need everyday and aside from body builder stunts, these protein rich foods are challenging to ramp up massively because they’re so filling.

Calories are in fats and carbs, so your best bet for refuelling (in your case) is to eat what you normally do but add extra portions of healthy fats and carbs. For example, when you have carbs like rice or potatoes or bread etc with vegetables and protein sources. Just add more of the carbs than you normally would and keep the rest roughly the same. And drizzle a bunch of extra virgin olive on top. And have extra fruit for dessert. And use complex carbs like oat bars with nuts and fruit for snacks. I guess in Japan get onigiri for snacks

Am I brave or do I just not know social rules? :eyes: :eyes: :eyes:

I’ll let Bidoof decide as I disappear like a ninja :dashing_away: :ninja: :fog:

お疲れ様です! it looks like quite the fun journey

HOLY SHIT! That’s awful. Did you report it to the police? People like that shouldn’t be allowed to drive…

Are you still feeling sore?

No, it’s a serious offense

Grr, somehow I managed to miss this part…
I’m very sorry this happened to you but glad that you are otherwise alright!
May that driver be HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSed at and scratched and bitten by cats! scratch
And may the rest of your trip be nyaaaaaaaaaaice and safe! love2

i do tend to walk a little. it happens. xddd

thank yoooou C:

Vevo 3, I find it a little sus that it only has half of the sports and support to an Apple Watch, the ones that it does track, it does it well, and I love the numbers, the sync with Apple Health is a bit awkward though

Yes I do, with a lot of sponges, One of my toes is almost permanently black because of how much pressure even walking with them already inflicts, they also keep the geometry of my feet correct, when I switched to げた, my legs started flying out :sob:

THEY DIDNT EVEN SAY すいません OR ANYTHING
But the guy did look pretty stressed and sped up after hitting me to run away

I didn’t notice on the main 6 onsens, but there was one rock from which the springs were flowing and the temperature there was indicated as 82 degrees.

Yes, I burned my legs yesterday xddd

Listen, I did my two pages dekiru today ^^

In today’s Bite Size Japanese, or rather three episodes, Layla was talking about how to pick a dream job, who’s an introvert and who’s an extrovert and misconceptions about Japanese people (though she mostly confirmed them ^^)

I noticed that after a bit of listening here and there in Japan my listening comprehension is significantly stronger, but still there were a few words that were taking me out of this podcast, so I’m not N3 listening immediately just yet xdddd

Life

温泉朝食! I got both the breakfast and dinner because I was genuinely curious how would it taste like, and although today I had a bit of a better idea of how to eat the things in it, I still felt a little lost with the process ^^

Either way, tasty!

Left my ryokan much earlier than on a normal day…

So today started with a very awkward commute ^^

The train that I drove wasn’t just the final train of that day, it was also the only train of the day that went directly, and I went with four slow ones, baring in mind that if I were to miss a single one, I’d probably have to wait two hours or something ^^

Those were the tiny, one-car-long trains that even had a machine for coins, even though you couldn’t buy any tickets there ^^

I decided to get off a bit before 姫路, in a place called 福崎 - known as the yokai town, and there is a good reason for its name ^^

The city is populated by 23 demons that went out of hiding and decided to sit down on the benches and chillax and invite people ^^

They have a special map that I’ll be showing below that contains locations of all of them around the city, and two placed the furthest away from one another are 10 kilometers in a straight line.

Naturally I did the whole yokai hunt xdddd

Walking around the city, you get to see a lot of different types of places, more educational ones, more metropolitan ones, more village ones

…and the most distant one basically asks you to just walk down to the countryside xddd

Walking by, I had plenty of kids say おはよう to me, こんにちは, and even the older people were eager to at least say hi C:

By the halfway point, the weather started spoiling me ^^

Also, slay, by far the best outfit ^^

I know some of you like 田舎, so there’s always more C:

Aaaand, bam, as I arrived at the university, I finished my punch card and found all of the yokais! Was fun ^^

After that, I set off to 姫路 to take photos of the castle in the sunset, but unfortunately, messed up the train and wasted a lot of time again xddd

By the time I arrived (and with the other lens!), it was already dark…

…ish ^^

I walked around the park a bit and looked for fun decorations, but by that time, a lot of things were closed already, so I went back into town!

Somehow, without even realizing it, I booked a really cheap hotel (2800 yen) that ALSO offered breakfast and dinner, so of course I had to try it! It’s not incredible, but the croquette with an egg was a nice change ^^

And since my JR West pass was due, I decided to jump on one last shinkansen destination - 岡山!The shinkansen I rode had a One Piece promo for some reason xddd

But the mirrors were stickered over with One Piece and all the stop announcements were made by Luffy with his special tone, so hey ^^

I had enough time in 岡山 to walk maybe 4-5 kilometers and make it to Harenowa, the performers’ school, I looked at their website and the performances that they have were pretty interesting, the stages are GIGANTIC ^^

Aaand I made it back and I finished my JR West pass! Next one in less than a week, probably ^^

See you tomorrow! ^^

What a name choice for a football club. I’m sure they have no idea what it means?

I’m skimming
I was so excited that you went to Kinosaki onsen that was so awesome for me and yet it wasn’t great for you… You slayed in your gorgeous yukata. I think I only did 1 or 2 of the towns onsen… When you “do something”, you do it “to the max” ((hugs))
OMG I’m so excited about the Hiroshima bike trail…
Whoa that was the best castle pic!!
I’m sorry nobody seems to make luggage that can keep up with your pace!
Gtg

:sob: :sob: :sob:

I’m sure there are suitcases made out of titanium that are relatively light and unbreakable, but I’m cheap, what can I say ^^

I really strive for this to be as close to the truth as possible! Staying in the moment and being able to be engaged in life until you finish something up is something I personally really want to be good at ^^

Mixed Life & Study

So funnily enough, I used up all my data on the SIM card, even though I still have more than a week to go. I got really scared because at first, every website was taking a very long to load… but once you get used to the newly capped speed, yes, it takes a few dozen seconds for Google Maps to give you locations, but YouTube will still work (in 144p) and you can still tether your phone’s network to your laptop if there was an emergency, so the company that sold me the SIM card (AlmondSIM, they’re Japanese!) kind of shot itself in the foot by capping the speed at this fast, I’ve already used almost a gigabyte of the data on capped speeds today :sob: xddd

Anyway, saw this ad at the metro station in Kobe and my heart started beating faster, maybe I’m meant for this whole Asian travel ^^

So today I went to Takarazuka!

Takarazuka is known for its elite theater with a gimmick… all the roles, whether male or female, are played by women. I’ve been made familiar of Takarazuka because of かげきしょうじょ I’ve been reading on and off, and that’s as close as one gets without infringing on the IP rights ^^

As with many posts before, the early May is probably one of the best times in the whole year to visit Japan IMO, everything is green, events everywhere, even though it does get pretty expensive ^^

The actual theater is really big and really fancy, it does look like a ballroom if you go there :eyes:

Here’s the most recent bunch of theater plays they have! Including some they’ll only have in the future, but of course, sold out long in advance ^^

Lots of merchandise and being really proud of their craft!

The whole aesthetic to me looks like a combination of French and Italian styles, and very much the vibe that something like Pokemon XY would’ve gone for ^^

In addition to the theater in Takarazuka, there also is a big Osamu Tezuka museum, he’s been a mangaka responsible for bangers such as Astro Boy, Kimba the White, Dororo, and GERMANY/BERLIN MENTIONED, Metropolis ^^

And in the park below the museum, there was a DIY market with workshops! I didn’t end up participating in any, but one of the guys selling cake in there was British and he was down to chat a bit, so EUROPE MENTIONED, woo xddd

And an event themed around Thomas the Tank Engine was going at the same time as the other things were happening!

A lot of things in the art center have been decorated for Thomas ^^

Anyway, the absolute coolest thing about Takarazuka in my opinion was the fact that it had big and open parks with playgrounds that were a bit more advanced than your usual plastic ones, so I imagine it must be great to be a child raised in Takarazuka, and immediately surrounded with art centers, theater, international children cartoon train sensations, etc. C:

So far one of my favorite towns in Kansai! Number one would probably be Kobe, number two, Osaka, number 3, Takarazuka?

And hey, NARUSE WILL HAVE A STAGE PLAY :DDDD

In the evening, I took a train to Kyoto where I’m sleeping today, but of course everything in Kyoto closes down at 4pm, so I was roaming around the city and wishing I were in Osaka instead xddd

Also, something something, third places ^^

The last time I was in Kyoto, I spent even less time there than I did in Okayama this time, but I still think I significantly prefer the vibe of Osaka to Kyoto ^^

Today I ate a 担々麺 without broth, once again I asked for it to be really spicy, once again I walked out not satisfied with the spiciness ^^
But it was VERY umami, it was super tasty to eat C:

Basically the only traditional part of Kyoto I saw today…

And yeah, I got really salty when I walked through it and it was closed. Salty to the point where tomorrow I am meeting up with a friend in Osaka, but before we do, I wanna go and see this museum to have an educated opinion on it xddd

And also, the next ドンキ I see that doesn’t have Miracle Shopping playing inside, what happened???

And for the first time ever I saw 百合姫 comics in Book-Off, that was really fun to see, even though used volumnes were almost the same price as the new ones ^^

HMMM SOUNDS CURSED BUT YOU DO YOU

So, hear from you from Niigata tomorrow! Gonna miss Kansai, it was a lot of fun here ^^

See you tomorrow!

May 10th, 2026

Damn, so close…

…and yet so far away xddd

and this one made me laugh when i was putting it in, good sentences on bunpro ^^

N1 is sloooowly coming together…

Life

No worries guys, I had the noise-cancelling headphones, I’m glad you had a great night xdddd

I did see a fancy building in Kyoto today, that’s something ^^

That was around 河原町 to which I went to send my broken-ish suitcase directly to my destination on the 12th in the afternoon! Yamato Transport, I love their stickers ^^

And yet again I feel like I didn’t give Kyoto a honest chance, even though I walked around a bit, it just felt like I barely scratched the surface of what it has to offer…

Well, a part of it luckily was the International Manga Museum! POLAND MENTIONED!

Also, as a small tangent, in many places in Japan, like museums and restaurants, they keep statistics asking people where they come from, and knowing I can answer both ドイツ and ポーランド, I have a feeling I’ve been getting more “すげぇぇ” from ポーランド, so I’m sticking to it for now xddd

Anyway, manga museum! In some places, it was restricted to take pictures inside, so I was trying to respect their wishes, even though for example at the hand forms of mangakas that came to the museum to leave their hand prints I’m like “WHY WOULDN’T YOU WANT FOR THEM TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED?”

The museum felt a little academical, mostly like “here’s a bookshelf” and “here’s a manga”, “do your own thing with them”, the only interactive exhibit was an index computer you could try to type a name of a manga in so that it’d tell you which floor they have it on

But they also had an exhibit on different manga from 2025 that won different kinds of manga of the year awards, and hey, I read some of them!

And if after leaving the museum you go to a cafe nearby, you can see autographs and drawings of mangakas that came there! Pretty sweet C:

…and then I arrived in Osaka and I’m immediately like “so why was I wasting time with Kyoto if it’s so cool here” xdddd

Much closer to my idea of what I’d want from a city xddddd

Me and a Japanese friend from Berlin went over to Hoshino Cafe for a small breakfast and to chat! She was a mother, so Happy Mother’s Day to her ^^

(tangent, why is mother’s day the same day everywhere BUT in Poland? grrrr xddd)

We went over to a Small Animals Cafe, and played together with all the animals they had on display!

suuuuper adorable C:

And a fun way to practice Japanese as well, because everyone at the cafe was just throwing 柔らかい!すごい!あああかわいい!!! ああ痛い痛い and those kind of things left and right ^^

But my favorite has been this adorable little boar, I’m sorry ^^
It was pretty heavy too, but I’d definitely adopt him ^^

Btw, all the animals were really cheap to buy, starting at just €10 for some mice, of course, you can’t get them to EU for sanitary reasons, but if you want to grab a cute animal, that cafe is your best bet!

And then I took a shinkansen and briefly arrived in Tokyo, just enough time to witness a train from the busiest train line in the world arrive at the station…

^^

Then jumped on another shinkansen and had an 駅弁!

aaaand i hade it halfway through the country! Greetings from 新潟! The more avid readers of the study log will understand why I’m here and how it all started ^^

(I exposed this picture for 5 seconds, it turned out really cool!)

So funny thing, I think I might have completely lost my voice over being on shinkansen. A weird combination of JAPANESE PEOPLE NOT COVERING THEIR MOUTHS WHEN THEY COUGH and ACS BLASTING STRAIGHT AT YOUR FACE REGARDLESS and when I arrived in 新潟, my voice was just, not outputting what I asked of it to output xdd

Thanks to the friend I’m meeting tomorrow I was able to get some cough drops and I’m bringing a mask to her, hopefully I won’t spread any hantaviruses left and right ^^
She also has a funny infection, so let’s exchange the database of viruses together, awww C:

And yeah, I’m really looking forward to meeting up with her, so fingers crossed and good night! See you tomorrow ^^

Confession time: If I have previously read about that, I have completely forgotten, so as a homework project I will have to searsh through this topic to figure it out.

But inasmuch as I’ve been considering stopping in Niigata sometime this summer, either on my way from Tokyo to Sapporo or during my later return trip (by train), I will definitely be paying attention to whatever you may choose to document here.

Hope your voice recovers quickly…

Hold up, you mean buy buy? Kinda wondering if I should switch from crickets to entertain my cat once they finally die of old age…

Ok. Now I’m no longer surprised  It’s still wild that they’ll do that though :sob:

It looks similar to the one I have, but maybe with more functions? I’m glad you’re happy with it. Yeah, the sports it has might not be a lot, but I guess they’re trying to offer some variety?

I’m not sure about syncing it with other apps, as I only sync it with the Garmin app, per se.

Does the battery last long? or did it also become worse with time?

That’s not quite nice nor polite from the げた to do that to your feet :sob:

Do you have a specific brand you’d recommend? I’m assuming you’re always looking for shoes with cushioning :sob:

The problem I have with shoes is they only last for about 3 months when I wear them
Due to the way I walk (and the same foot being bent like 3 times over the years) either the outside sole (outsole) or the inside sole (insole) won’t survive for long, depending on which is stronger, more durable and made of better material. This has been something I’ve been struggling with for a lot of time without finding a satisfying solution :sob:

How dare they :sob: No Sakura for such people :sob: Only for you :cherry_blossom:

I would be worried if he slowed down and turned back to finish the job

Oh god. They’re really that hot  I guess that’s one more thing to strike off of the list :smiling_face_with_tear: Better be on the safe side, I guess

The room looks really nice, but I’m guessing those doors are very thin

Why would I expect anything other than that

Congratulations and thank you for the photos

These are stunning photos

That’s way better than the Aldi experience when you’re out of data  BTW, how did you get the SIM card?

Also, for a second I thought the SD card was full and I got scared :sob:

Two weird questions: Why does everything in Kyoto close at 4 p.m.? :scream: and are you allowed to tip the person singing or performing on the street?

This shot :sob:

A lot of places have been visited, but a lot to still add to the list

What a small nightmare  At least they apologized

Are you flying back to Berlin with this?

It seems you went shortly to paradise

The reflection of the lights in the “lake” is amazing

I like the clothes  and good luck to both of you meeting up tomorrow

I, again, shall apologize for the long post, but I had to catch up on your adventures :sob:

A Sakura to give your voice back :cherry_blossom:

Unfortunately the prayers didn’t reach through, thanks for keeping me in your prayers though xddd :sob:

Buy buy DIO-Berry, the place is in Denden Town if you were curious of ever going in there and grabbing one ^^

The it lasting shorter with time is my conspiracy theory that I can’t really back, because there’s another aspect that came into my life between me buying it and now: it incentivized me to become way more physically active, so yes, it does last shorter (5-ish days?), but there’s a good reason for it lasting shorter now ;___; xddd

If you consider hiking in the Alps, I think an obvious answer is going to be Salomon, I think I’m pretty much the same as you when I consider that I wear the same shoes every day and that they don’t stick for that long and are not very reliable, those ones have a lot of sponges, insulating and great insoles, and they do wear out, but luckily not as quickly as my previous ones, I have them since November-ish of last year and I can see myself using them for at least the next few months every day ^^

Yep, and you can hear people in the streets pretty loud, thank you noise cancelling headphones ^^

Online website I found as I was sitting in the plane from Frankfurt and waiting for it to set off ^^

That one will safely make it through the trip ^^
image

because it channels the vibe of being a random german countryside village that has the final bus of the day at 8PM and then you’re stranded I don’t know xdddd

No, Kyoto has some district that are open for a bit longer and you can see the lights and eat some cool food in there, but I think the implication is that in the day you hang out in Kyoto, and in the evening you go over to Osaka, and since I’m a bit of a nocturnal animal, I’m team Osaka I believe ^^

Mixed Life & Study

Exciting~

Today was the day I met up with another friend in Japan, and we spent a whole day together ^^

Ever since starting in this garden, she’s been a tour guide taking me through the city

Pretty quickly though we’ve decided to pivot away and she rented us a real car and we grabbed some snacks and food and went away from Niigata city!

Still hopeful, I bought a lot of drinks to try to get my vocal folds to start playing around and as the time in the car went on, I slowly started realizing I scream through my injured vocal folds faster than I’m regenerating them with the moisture and ehhhhhh xddddd

But my friend was such a yapper and it was such an amazing experience to listen to her continuing one story after another, and it was very easy to identify the spots to come in and start yapping on Topic B and introducing Topic C so that she could later yap on Topic C and introduce Topic D so that I could yap on Topic D and introduce Topic E and ahhh  :folded_hands:

We went over to 村上 in the Niigata prefecture to try some tea from a tea ceremony and she did complain at how difficult it is to do the tea drinking ceremony wearing a kimono, and yep, definitely can see that xddd

Then we pulled over at a roadside station to look at some souvenirs, even though I ended up grabbing none xddd

We had some food together and basically yapped there almost until the closing of that station xddd

And as we kept on doing the roadtrip more north, we arrived at 桑川 station, at the very strict north part of the prefecture!

As it turns out, my friend was pretty familiar with that place and a couple of people recognized her there, and I was side eyeing it and going like “damn thats so cool” C:

We went to 夕日会館, a booth where people would stop over and grab something to eat before gazing at the sun or taking the train to wherever their home would be, and I ended up getting a 村上市 manhole card with a quick survey of “where are you from, how old are you, what gender are you”, probably to track demographic stats xddd

So right next to the station there is a 笹川流れ beach where we were trying to get the best sunset out of while collecting NOT AMBER, she called it pirate glass, and it made me start questioning if the things we call at the Baltic Sea actually are ambers or have I been catching pirate glass all along ^^

And ahhh, the ambiance has been so cool C:

On the way back we hooked by a car wash and funnily enough, this was my first time seeing a proper car wash in action in Japan, so it involved a lot of making sounds and lights and pouring water around and I do remember clapping when it was going through and thinking of a solid good 8/10 score xddd

And I have finally seen the woman, the legend, the one you might know from my friend’s study log, おばあちゃん!!!!

I also was able to feed her and give her pet pets, its been great C:

But yeah, as the time went on today and I kept screaming through my already heavily damaged vocal folds and doing the math of like “do i want to enjoy myself in the moment hating on german tourists taking every outdoor adventure opportunity in japan” vs “should i be able to use my voice tomorrow” i kept on mostly prioritizing the former one, and eeeh, i arrived at the hotel and i can’t make a single sound at all xddd

It’s been fantastic though :sob: :sob: :sob:
I’m always so enthralled with people that just have interesting stories to tell and know how to deliver them in an exciting way, so even when we were collecting the rocks at the beach, I was constantly thinking of what we’ve already been chatting about and what will come after that ^^

So thank you @queenofthegods and you’ve been a real one and it was such a pleasure to be driven by you across the prefecture today. She did use the word “chaos” to refer to herself, possibly unaware that the adventures we’ve had today are basically how i plan all of my trips and travels, so hey, she matched up the adventuring velocity really well C:

IT WAS SO COOL AAAAA

Definitely would recommend taking package holiday day trips with her ^^

Thank you so much queenofthegods and hopefully see you again if i manage to get back to Japan one day ^^

See you tomorrow!

トトロ!

トトロ!!

The ambiance looks so amazing! So calm, to contrast your day I imagine - I can’t begin to guess how much chaotic energy you both meeting radiated

Another Wanikanian added to the Pokedex!

WAHHHHHHH おばあちゃん appearance in a Bidoof post??? Easily the best thing I’ve seen all day :sob:
