A Certain Bidoof's Multi-Language Travel & Friends & Languages Usage Arc 🇯🇵 🇩🇪 🇨🇦 🇵🇱

Wot?!?! WOW!!
Felicitaciones!

LoL sometimes those are the best discoveries

Wow, what an Easter celebration!
Certainly one for the record books
I can’t wait to tell my friend Malgorzata

I think the many national holidays in April are an because of the season of joy and coming back to life (plants and flowers and animals becoming active again etc)

Ah I’m really enjoying the Bidoof’s eye view of this trip

So in my depths of Mokuro-scraped manga, here’s one that I saw a sampler once in Germany and must have thought like “yeah, that does sound like something I might like” half a year ago :eyes:

I think a part of it might have been the cover:

The actual content is a bit different than what I expected though, it’s doing taboo things and trying to overcome shit-life-syndrome, which is an evergreen topic:

I do appreciate the edginess of the first chapter, it was fun ^^

And on the planet WaniKani today, two new lessons!

isn’t that just 盛り上がる? :upside_down_face: xddd
English is a language full of false friends, I know 腫れる is a different kind of a swell, but hey, glad they keep adding new words ^^

Life

keep asking myself all the time smhhh ^^

Each day feels warmer than the previous one, and the sun intensity already feels like deadly lasers!

Today did feel like a indoors-sightseeing day, where if a museum was free, you wouldn’t say no to it, would you? C:

So special highlights to Money Museum, showing the story of Portugese transition from their last currency, Escudo, into Euro :eyes:

And also, the oldest church of the city, The Lisbon Cathedral, that apparently was where the city was being founded in the first place ^^

And murals, all around the city! Shuly, summoning you~

Blue if you look up…

…blue if you look down ^^

Though, those stone people just took my heart, they’re so adorable C:
They were using mostly English names for the stone people, but there was a stone person in there that had a “D” on her and of course it was a German one xdddd

And CANADA MENTIONED (woo C:)

There’s really not that much Polish stuff here, which I’m a bit surprised by, no writing in Polish on things, no stone person for Poland, though there’s plenty of Polish tourists, so who knows, times might be changing ^^

See you tomorrow!

I actually didn’t mention my favorite part of the Boy’s Abyss chapter 1, this card directly between the chapters, very sweet wordplay C: ^^

I think the manga touches on some topics of personal interest to me and has some really tender moments of affection between the protagonists…

…but also is sooo depressive that it’s hard not to feel like you actually are being thrown into the abyss, and it does make me feel a little uncomfortable to read through ^^

On the upside, I found it compelling to push through a few more chapters than I expected today, so it does a pretty good job at selling its premise, I just wish the presentation were handled a little more gracefully ^^

And on the day of my 489 day streak of Bunpro… I ran out of items to review, except for just one? To commemorate that, I’ve decided to add the N1 deck to my pile, I’ll only do 2 items a day, which means it’ll take me 3 months to get through it

But I hope that with the reduced velocity, I’ll be able to focus on the grammar items a bit more, so 如く and たところで, please stay in my head for a bit more!

N1 BUNPRO HAS BEEN STARTED :eyes:

Life

AAAA CALLING RESIDENT TAIYOUSEA SLEEPER AGENTS

Today, we took a bus to a place called Ericeia, an open ocean summer resort at the west coast of Portugal C:

The weather has been absolutely beautiful, but when you get to the ocean, the breeze from the side of the water is just FREEZING COLD, so i needed to wear a coat to cover my sleeveless at 26 degrees and peak sun intensity ^^

And huge, huuuuge waves, way more than if you just look at them in the bay. So much so, I got flooded by one wave today and got rocks and sand all over myself, and the water bounced off of me and went into my eyes too xdddd

A lot of the buildings in the town resemble something you’d associate with Greece more than Portugal, but hey, both countries are Eastern European, right? ^^

also, GERMANY MENTIONED and BERLIN MENTIONED, find out if you can find the desaturated NETT HIER sticker ^^

And then we took it to Sintra, a town that has been in the World Heritage UNESCO catalog for three decades right now, and travellng there over Easter is a blursed experience ^^

On the upside, a lot of things have been set up for tourists to enjoy and the people in service today seemed really kind and friendly today, presumably expecting for today to be one of the most income-heavy days of the year if they play it right ^^

But everyone is just super nice to us in here and it’s like, aaaa :sob:

And then, we took a train to Lisbon, but as soon as I saw a train, I was just mesmerized by how badly worn out it was and I was like “it must have not been cleaned up since the 60s” or something, imagine my surprise when I found out it has been made in 1993 and modernized in 2013 xddd
WHAT DID YOU DO TO THAT TRAIN? WHO? HOW??? xddd

And over back in Lisbon, found a huuuuge library that was still open on Easter had books in many languages, including ones like Swedish or Mandarin for some (really good) reason. I wonder if this is a book that could be used to teach western speakers mandarin? It has all sorts of comics and short texts with latin furigana inside of it, so hey, @polv, maybe you would find it interesting C:

The weirdest book I’ve found in the library has been this one though, Leonard Maltin’s 1994 guide for movies, over a thousand pages with individual reviews to each of the books and short synopses, sections about directors, and I did look some 1994 movies in there, as it’s often called the best year of all time for movies - didn’t find any big ones though. I did find Back to the Future though!
But it’s such a WILD time capsule to behold and I’m so amazed before the age of internet, someone had enough knowhow and time to just write about EVERY movie they could place their hands on, and immortalize it in the format of a book like this, damn :eyes:

Going back to Berlin tomorrow, won’t be an easy trek and might have an adventure or two, but see you tomorrow, yall ^^

Ahh, like the old good SRS grind with 5 items, party like it’s 2025 ^^

though i genuinely feel much happier with the fact my SRS block shrunk to like, 20-30 minutes now, I really hope that it stays this way, even though genuinely I feel like I’m learning Japanese slower this year than last year, and this is where Pokemon comes in ^^

And ヒナツ, also vulnerable speaking, but growing up, Mars was my favorite character from Sinnoh - it makes me really happy to see her ancestor realize the vision for the character by focusing on her character more than her job C:

I like that ヒナツ has a bit of a non-conformist persona, as opposed to Mars, where Mars was just following the structures of the group, so, hey!

Also, the meta team of Bidoofs can no longer carry me through the fights at levels 27 or something :sob: :sob: :sob:

But today was a pretty bad day for reading in Japanese I felt, maybe because I was on transit knowing I won’t be back home anytime soon, or maybe fatigue of travelling too, but I kept staring at katakana and going like “is this a フ or is that a ワ” and that hasn’t been happening in a while xddd

And 忘却のサチコ is so wholesome, I mean, blursed, I mean, wholesome xddd
It’s such a sweet manga, excavated it from my Mokuro depths earlier today: six volumes have been made for free, it’s unlikely I will read all six of them tho ^^

Writing from a Flixbus to Berlin, yes, this late xddd

It was my last day in Lisbon today, and mom left early, so I just wandered around catching up on the internet on my headphones ^^

Fnac, which is the closest thing to Dussmann in Portugal/France/Spain I can think of, had Zara Larsson’s new album in the featured section! I put it on my headphones and it’s cunty and slay and was funny to listen to xddd

WHY WOULD YOU CALL IT A BANANA CAFE IF YOU DONT SERVE BANANAS

Also, where’s Michael C Jordan, call the guy to Portugal!!!

And not to have it on my bucket list for the next time, I decidd to get Pastel de Bacalhau: it’s a potato pastry with fish and cheese inside of it, I’m a huge fan of cheese and I can confirm that indeed it does double down on the cheesy taste ^^

WHY WOULD YOU CALL IT TAPIOCAS IF IT DOESNT HAVE TAPIOCA

So fun story, my flight back ended up being almost three hours delayed, and the good news is that Ryanair was kind enough to send me a discount coupon for the Duty Free zone food, the bad news is that the coupon was… €4. I ended up getting 0.7 of a sandwich for that price, thank you Ryanair, very sweet of you!

I needed to get another Flixbus, muuuch later, but I didn’t get lost and arrived just on time, and now I’m moving sloooowly towards Berlin again. I wonder when will I go to sleep now :sob: xdd

Also, i’m so crazy about tHE FLOWER BOUQUET VENDING MACHINE AT THE POZNAŃ AIRPORT

This chapter was a bit heavier with 敬語 and it was a bit more difficult to read it, it’s level 28 on Natively and I can see why, I did try to parse the text regardless ^^

And of course there was a food related gag at the end of the chapter, a meal makes her forget after all ^^

I got myself a DSLR! For the first time in my life ^^

It’s a Nikon D5200, and I got it for 1/10th of the price for when it came back 15 years ago. When you think of “15 years ago”, 2011 is not the first thing that comes to your mind, so I am happy to inform it does support SD cards, wifi sync, a lot of different postprocessing tools, HDR, and so on, I couldn’t think of a thing that it doesn’t ^^

The reason why this DSLR is important will reveal itself by the end of the month, I will be progressively louder and louder about it as the month goes on, I just need some time to sit down and Google things ^^

So today, a friend of mine invited me to a creative writing/zine making workshop!

I went for the zines, stayed a bit longer for the writing prompts, and although I don’t do that well with fictional stories, I took one prompt as something of a third-person journaling rant about myself and I just FLEEEWW though that prompt, so maybe non-fiction is my forte, who knows ^^

Either way, I did sign up for the zine-making! We plan on going A5-ish format and 150+ pages across 15+ people. We just started today, and we plan on having it ready in August/September? I’ll try to write some prompts on the topic. The topic for the zine is “Desire & Regret”, so an ever-green one ^^

Also, the cafe where the meetup took place, the owner of the cafe is also the organizer of the zine-making group, and all sorts of other events, and all of them look really fun :eyes:

I genuinely want to start going more to this cafe, we’ll see if I follow through ^^

Book club tomorrow! See you tomorrow!

Will look out for updates!!

Tbh I prefer tech from this period, especially with things like cameras, they’re really good and have all the useful modern things and such that you could need but none of the “we know that you guys love everything online so we made it that your camera uploads all your photos to all your social media directly and straight away as soon as you take the photo!
and you don’t actually buy it, instead it has ads and you pay for it monthly every month forever and it won’t work it you aren’t connected to the internet …okay, I don’t know if there are modern cameras that do exactly that but I wouldn’t but surprised if there was one that did.

Looks a really cool camera though! and since you can change the lens you can get all those cool additional ones for super interesting photos.

I think Fujifilm is doing a really cool job with new smartphone-like features in their new instax digital cameras, when i grow up, i’ll get myself an Instax Wide Evo, but i don’t think i want to blow this much money on every single picture i would take ^^

I really like how tactile it feels ^^

But yes, the 2010s tech is great and I did feel optimistic about the state of the world back then, ahh, I’m already getting nostalgic ^^

I have a Nokia Lumia 1020 somewhere I bought 10 years after it came out and can’t remember where I have it, but it’s my type of a shitty 2010s camera and I need to find it somewhere too xdd

Layla is talking about finding her job and learning English through different sources, it’s funny that Japanese people have a bit of a different approach to the west about AI and they go like “YESSS CHATGPT IS SO COOL”, well Layla has mentioned it as a method to learn English too xdd

Though, if anything, English is probably the best referenced language in the whole database, so if any language is better to learn with it, that language is probably English ^^

And the wonders of this manga, those two panels are four pages apart ^^

And yes, 佐々木 does pull of a crazy excited face this chapter too, but I’m slowly growing to the feeling that it might be a bit of a payoff spoiler to show those, so you’ll have to read the manga to see them, it’s really fun, but really hard xdddd

Life

Book Club was nice today, we talked about body doubling and meeting up to just exist in one another’s presence rather than having to do something specific. We also talked about differences in expectations between what signals you need to submit to neurodivergent and neurotypical people in order to communicate to them that you’d like to be their friend or their partner, and the discussion had a huge range of neurotypical-to-neurodivergent people chime in with thoughts, but a big part of the room agreed that the Berlin approach of “JUST SAY THE DAMN THING” is the best at combatting ambiguity ^^

But, a different tangent today! I don’t think I ever mentioned this, but Berlin has an ice hockey team, Berlin Eisbären, that’s really good at the game on a national level ^^

There are a looot of fans coming for their every game, and I’ve been to a few back in the day, I know what people scream out when they get excited for the games too xdd

Each time before the games, Uber Arena is full, it’s a bit awkward to be showing people’s faces, so I’ll show a gift shop!

My study log has a flag of Canada for English language and I’m so envious of Canadians for their hockey teams and their really cool jerseys, I can’t find any of them on Vinted, but I hope that maybe one day ^^

Either way, today was a big game, a semi-final playoff, and Berlin Eisbären faced off against die Kölner Haie… and wiped the floor with them, 6:3!

All the playoff final games are really expensive and the tickets are sold out well in advance because Berliners really like cheering for their team if it’s doing so well, but, hey.

HEY

WIR WOLLEN DIE EISBÄREN SEHENNNNN

OOOOOO

DENN UNSER LEBEN WÄRE SO LEER OHNE BÄREN

That does actually look pretty cool! I like how it looks similar to older cameras. Perhaps a cool tech retro-future renaissance is looming after the 2020s enshitification-era.

I’m still using a digital camera for my photo needs, I think it’s from 2015/2016 - so at least ten years anyway - it gets done what I need it to, I have been thinking of upgrading at some point probably to a DLSR too but… I’m kind of attached to that 2010s vibe of it

They do add to the review pile for a bit, but for each new WaniKani item, I get a little more mileage of my account, so the lifetime license pays off even further ^^

Also, when I praised さよなら 絵梨 for its cinematography in the panels, that was rookie numbers, A Meal Makes Her Forget is the real deal ^^

YES WE BERLIN EISBÄREN WILL WIN IN THE FINALS AS WEL<voice cracks><starts coughing> xdddd

Yesterday at the book club, one of the guys there invited me to his special board game place in Berlin and we’ve played Troublebot together. Troublebot is an interesting game because you have to play it competitively, but it does feel like an challenge to play the game in the best possible way and both him and me were looking for certified EPIC PLAYS to play with ^^
Unfortunately, he won 2:1 with me xddd

It was my first board game I’ve played in a while, and it was in a place that had a free space to sit down and play board games with people between 10am and 8pm, and their library of games was huge, we hoped to play a few other games too, but Troublebot got us good C:

When there is a game you really like, you can rent it to your place for 7 days for a minimal price, which sounds like a really good deal… if not for the fact that the Berlin libraries ALSO offer board games, for FREE ^^

It’s like they say in Jelly Jelly Radio, Germany really is the place to be if you’re into board games, I wish I was playing them a little more :sob:

Anyway, see you tomorrow!

Life

Here we go C:

I went for a fetch quest around the town to grab a new battery, a new holding strap, a new cap for the lens, a smaller charger for the camera, a memory card that supports V30, and since I was getting things second-hand, I only ended at €50, this camera is significantly cheaper than I was worried it’d be :sob:

We talked on A Durtle’s Refuge today about shooting in raw and different camera types and yup, playing around with RAWs is a ton of fun! And a huge time sink too ^^

Everything feels significantly punchier and shadows seem longer if you take pics this way ^^

I went around the city on a bike with the camera dangling from my neck, luckily, I didn’t hit anything xdd

Went to Dussmann, the big bookstore, as well in the search of Japan-themed things to photograph there too ^^

It’s pretty funny how South Korea is just attaching itself to Japan in terms of far-eastern culture these days ^^

Hire me for portraits, or for magazines, idk, just hire me for a fun photography project xdddd

But yep, it’ll still take me a while to learn all the functions that this camera can pull over ^^

See you tomorrow!

I remember that one of the reasons why fujoshis claim that yaoi is better than yuri is that yuri by nature tends to be pretty unproblematic with the depictions of the characters, and fujoshis project themselves into every character in heated rivalry, but here, we’ve just got… a nurse smoking and riding a bike xdd :sob:

who dis

it’s weird i haven’t even commented on the fact that Artemis 2 mission was a lot of fun and I’ve been following some of the news updates from the crew, including their music that was supposed to assist them on the journey, and since this is NASA, it’s the cool space, so I give a thumbs up to the whole mission and it was great to follow it xddd

But yeah, today was a cinema day again and by the time I got to that Asian-adjacent cinema, Neues Off, there was a LOT of people in front of it, almost every seat for the screening of The Drama was taken, I’ve never seen anything like this at this cinema :eyes:

I really enjoyed the movie btw, very messy subject matter, but very gracefully handled ^^

Also, Berlin mentioned, I didn’t know there was a anime version of Metropolis! Though, embarrassingly enough, Berlin and especially Kino Babylon prides itself on the original Metropolis with live orchestra and I haven’t seen it even once yet, but it exists!

And yeah, always a joy to see this Welt balloon from up close, it’s often airborne ^^

said it before with コミック百合姫, i’ll say it again, this is definitely not a level 18 manga :eyes:

there’s a chasm between this one and よつばと that’s supposed to be just one level easier than this one, it does have less text than a regular manga, but that text doesn’t feel particularly easy when it appears, like this one:

this panel alone contains two words I looked up on Yomitan, 奥歯 and 噛ましめ

In terms of me enjoying the manga though… ehhhh…?
it’s this weird intersection of an author wanting to be edgy and kinky and quirky and you being able to tell that the author’s personality type probably isn’t “edgy” or “kinky” or “quirky”, I do appreciate it as a specific kind of a normie fantasy though xddd

And 日本人の知らない日本語4, yes, a library book, yes, I’m reading it! It’s like a comedic version of one of the books I’ve read for the spring marathon, the one about the atlas of the world for 13-year-olds ^^

There are comics in it, writeups about the culture, quizes, the angle of it is a bit “japanese person commenting on other people being interested in japanese language… liteRALLY WHY???”, and it’s a little snarky to read from my perspective, because I see myself being judged through those pages too ^^

Two of the interesting things in the フランス segments they had was a prose rant about sending post using Air Mail abroad and a manga rant about French language not being phonetic, so a person whose name was Eustache was doomed when he was learning how to write katakana, as he had two ways to write his name, literal one and a phonetic one, I find it pretty funny that my literal and phonetic names are really similar across all languages except for English, and probably French too xddd

Cake!

Got invited by friends to a cakestravaganza today which all the way until 2 hours before it happened, nobody knew whether it was a birthday party or it wasn’t. It wasn’t, but I did end up getting a small gift anyway xddd

I took the DSLR with myself hoping to take some great pictures, but the flow of the conversations got me a bit sidetracked and I didn’t end up taking as many pictures of friends as I’d like ^^

But it was hosted at the photographer friend’s place and she really made it feel like a proper tea party, with so many different things to choose from, we also goofed around and it ended up being a party for a grand total of 10 people! Of course, as it is customary to us, the best conversations happened after the people started getting tired and then it was like “dolphins are scumbags” vs “i hope bats never get caught in my hair” vs “i’m so scared of scorpions for real” vs “SO JASON STATHAM IS LIVING HIS BEST LIFE BEING ON THE PLAN OF THE MEG 1 & 2” (4 stars on letterboxd btw, it’s really bad xddd)

I also learned what barnacles actually are, because I’ve only known them from hearing, but that’s it xddd

She’s a very creative artist though, not just with photography, and I really admire those people ^^

So yeah, my first tea party in a while after me, we should be doing them more often!

See you tomorrow C:

so i’m completely clueless in the world of japanese names of the radicals, but today’s Belgium part of the 知らない日本語 casually mentioned forming kanjis of different characters, and there was one radical in there, こざとへん, which might be the very first time i’ve learned a name of a radical in japanese xdd

Also it was a fun section because I’ve been to Gent before and it’s one of my favorite places in Europe and it’s nice to see the author having taught there too! C:

This was a segment about inventing kanji and how easy it is to smash different radicals into things, and then try to assign it a meaning, like they tried one with 携帯電話, or one with puzzles for puzzles xddd

I didn’t get the joke with ジオン軍, it’s apparently like a light novel series?

Well, not my kind of fiction probably ^^

But yeah, a lot of reviews on the SRS today, study might be slowly ramping up again!

This book though is the exact kind of thing i’m looking for when i’m looking for things in Japanese though, so happy to have found it!

maybe enigmaxprincex would have more context on him ^^

Anyway, had a friend for RuPaul’s today, and the friend is in a Writer’s Block, but like, literally xdd

This is a notebook and has a tiny drawing on each page that if you flip over quick enough, becomes an animated story C:

And yeah, finally caught up on 3 weeks of RuPaul’s today, and uh oh, three controversial episodes back to back :eyes:

I’m happy with some of the outcomes, and two thirds of the finalists are the people I wanted to see, but damn, the showrunners have done a pretty poor job at running this season as a reality TV show in the last few episodes :eyes:

Also, I got a big compliment from that friend I won’t forget for a while: he told me that I know how to provide for guests coming to my place and I can read what guests need at a given point in time before they even ask for it, and it made me feel SO WARM AND WHOLESOME C:

my mom is really good at that and i keep looking at her and stealing bits and pieces, so it seems like a seed of it has fallen on me, and it definitely made my evening tonight ^^
