A Certain Bidoof's Multi-Language Travel & Friends & I'm A German Citizen Arc 🇯🇵 🇩🇪 🇨🇦 🇵🇱 🇨🇳

This is a weird question, but do you feel like you’re being a different person when you’re speaking German as opposed to when you speak English? Do you feel any difference in personality, way of thinking, mentality and how you approach different things? or is it all the same regardless of the language?

I love this, and his general speech style… But also his yapping is 長すぎるわ

So I had this issue with manga comprehension for a while too, but it’s interesting to me that y’all see it as specific to yuri… I felt like it was just kinda everything… But also I got myself past it by reading a ton of yuri

I actually had way more trouble with ホリミヤ in this regard tbh… Was shocked when (without knowing anything about ABBC) I learned it was an ABBC pick… Still kinda surprised it’s “only” L22

I didn’t think the “fewer words” thing is so specific to yuri though.

Exactly! :sob::joy::sweat_smile:

I still find manga to just be hard. Even if it’s easy manga. I think the only manga that feels easy to me is something that’s sub level 20 on Natively (and honestly, sometimes even then..). I sometimes wonder if it would be better if more people graded manga vs novels bc a L25 manga without lookups is brutal for me, but I can usually vibe up to a L30 novel (as long as it’s not too genre heavy) without lookups.

i think it’s a stylistic thing that can come up in a lot of yuri which tends towards more introspective/wistful stuff. but of course yuri can have eg comedy blunt romance, gag manga etc.

i dont really read a lot of introspective het/shoujo etc is all

I’m a “look everything up” gal 90% of the time anyway… But I do vibe through manga more these days. Not sure I could do that with L30 LN tho

What would grading against novels illustrate/achieve exactly? I just don’t think about cross-medium difficulty. Required skills are too different. (Personally I’d almost always grade the manga as easier, if I did).

Of the few manga adaptations of LNs I’ve read, I can’t think of an example where the manga felt harder

That makes sense

Ahh gotcha. I’d say I’ve read a good amount of both/all

I just think the scales are entirely unrelated. Meanwhile, I think the TV/book scales are fairly consistent. My TV show levels are about the same as my audiobook levels. But manga at a given level has nothing to do with a novel at that level, imo.

Yeah, that’s right!

Otoh TV and manga also seem to be mostly identical. At least the ones on my profile. :woman_shrugging:

i’ve never seen this level of activity under my post for a day, thank you everyone, was fun to read xdddd

YESSS AND THAT’S MY BIGGEST PROBLEM SPEAKING GERMAN

In Polish I’ve already noticed that I’m missing vocab for a lot of queer-related experiences, and also things related to Betriebsrat, things related to nerd culture, so I just make up for it by being very formal and while attempting to lighten up the tone, I just insert an untranslated English/German word in my Polish sentence hoping that somebody would be able to understand me :sob:

English is my main language, so this is the default ^^

In German I feel a bit more stupid, because sometimes Konjunktiv II won’t come to me automatically, so I will try to simplify the sentence as much as I can to get the general idea across even though the details will not be understood easily. I also feel less outgoing and less willing to be your friend, because I don’t know how to say it in a pleasant and friendly way that wouldn’t be too over-the-top and wouldn’t deter people away xddd
I NEED TO LEARN THE PHATIC EXPRESSIONS

In Japanese I’m mostly relying on making weird noises like “そうか” or “やばい!”, hoping that it’ll make my listener not ask me the questions and make me not have to follow up, but I did have a Japanese experience today where I was able to construct like three pretty decent sentences xdd

And in Chinese, eeee,

xddd

Same here, absolutely <3

outside of yuri, I think I tend to lean seinen and josei, those have way longer dialogue boxes and tend to be a little more readable, at least from my perspective ^^

Same, but Happiness absolutely does not deserve to be rated as the easiest manga on Natively, just because there’s one word every two pages doesn’t mean that the word will be EASY xdddd

I had to do a few lookups reading over Happiness :sob:

Yep, absolutely, can relate to that. I have a widget on my desktop that shows me that 気になってる人 dropped to Level 21:

and yeah, good luck to read it when you only feel familiar with Level 21, welcome to the world of pain xdddd

My singers, where you at ^^

Also, EXCUSE ME, WHAT’S THAT LAST DEFINITION???

Final block of day 9 tomorrow!

And today on MaruMori, an article on 本音 vs 建前, I’m happy they wrote it, but I wonder how applicable is this at N2 level, considering we’re beaten up with this ever since you go to like, Genki 2 or something xddd

And I read an entire manga volume today! Been a while coming ^^

It’s another one of the mangas that only me and @akatsukinoluna read on Natively, it’s an anthology of small coming-of-age stories going out of high school and into college, the characters in it are appear a little confused by the adult world, reading the room, leaving the school, and the manga for a big part of it is platonic exclusively, which I very much appreciate ^^

It did not knock my socks off or anything though ^^

Life

So today my lower iron finally caught up with me xddd

It’s day three of a heatwave in Berlin, forecast had 33 degrees each day, none of the days reached as high, but still, the heat building up over the last three days, me putting less attention to supplements have led me to feel really groggy and bloated today. Still, it wasn’t a wasted day though!

When I was reading the manga in an air-conditioned shopping mall to get my head to spin less (xddd), a Japanese person saw me in public reading! He asked me how is it possible that I’m reading in Japanese and I’m like… 10年間日本語を勉強します, and he’s like “WOWOWOOW” xddd

I didn’t get a 日本語上手 though xddd

Went to the queer book club as usual today, people were just melting on the sofas today and I genuinely feel like I said less in English than I did in German yesterday :eyes:

But also, one of the people in the group wants to organize a skateboard group that would be a spinoff of the book club and I find it really cool, I’m probably not going to attend it for a while, but I appreciate the incentive ^^

And yeah, I didn’t feel sleepy for a long time today because of the temperature, opened up the windows like an hour ago and AHHHHHHHHHHH

Iron supplements taken though, I don’t know how long does it take for the levels to even out, but I can imagine the next few days will be a bit groggy.

See you tomorrow!

the more I read the more I think the rating of natively is more like, how fast/easily can I feel like i’ve read a complete ‘unit’ of something… volume, book, whatever… and in that respect I think Happiness is almost perfect, because it’s a pretty ‘serious’ story (or at least bloody/dark/unsettling, which signifies ‘serious story’ sometimes) that uses barely any words and focuses a lot on the visual storytelling, so it’s an incredible confidence booster. Even if the words need lookups, I feel like (at least based on that first volume) you could figure out the intended meaning after looking it up based on context; with a lot of other manga, even if you lookup the meaning you might still be like ‘uh what does that sentence actually mean tho’

Like, I feel like a lot of what has been building confidence for me over my reading journey so far has been like, ‘Oh, I have actually managed to read a volume of X, a story about [ethics/complicated emotions/some murder mystery which had a convoluted plot etc], I guess I can do this.’

(The other part is being like ‘fuck it we ball’ and just reading on even when you don’t get something)

Yay!! I’m still on day 5. It’s so far probably the most interesting route so far… But also wow they turned Ilya’s horniness up to 11… Playing so much Fate got me to pick up プリズマ☆イリヤ again… It finally feels doable

It does help that you get to skip all the tedious common route parts

It’s been a while since I read it, but I thought it was the same two characters the whole time? Or did the physical have bonus stories?

Yeah I think the author is probably on the aroace spectrum 知らんけど

Yeah. I thought it was a bit awkwardly done, and definitely not her best writing

Yeah, that’s one of the exceptions that I found harder than expected at first, between the slang, short scenes, short/contracted speech, etc.

Your language confusion at its peak.

I shall keep my thoughts and jokes to myself , but this did make me laugh and forget the heat for a bit

This is absolutely normal and I would’ve been surprised if this didn’t happen  Don’t be too hard on yourself

The less you use a language (or certain words from it) over time, the more challenging it becomes to recall it/them, because your brain doesn’t think you require them that often. Hence, they’ll be moved towards the dark corners of the brain, where they’ll be stored until you present your brain with a consistent need for them. Only after that will you start recalling them easily  That’s something expected when you have a lot of languages and terms stored in your brain  “Priorities” would be the thing that your brain always keeps in its mind (don’t laugh at this pun :sob: I’m not proud of it)

Also, don’t be surprised when you’re like a completely different person in another language or while using that language. That’s also totally normal  and part of learning and interacting with any language  Each language has its own way of forming thoughts and, in turn, forming your personality  I’d like to think that’s at least how it works for me with different languages

Whenever you feel things not going your way, think of/look at this special Sakura :cherry_blossom: and everything will get better and it’ll help you with all your problems

A little frustration is expected while trying to speak German, as there are many rules of grammar you need to always keep in mind to try and express what you want to express  It’s just part of the language (and the thing that makes a lot of people hate the language) but practicing a certain structure over and over again would help with the process

I would also like to recommend you this nice website, which would help you with Kunjugation if that’s ever needed

Things will get better with time and practice  and this other special Sakura will make sure of that :cherry_blossom:

A sign that you’re truly 上手 now

DAY 10 GIVE IT UP FOR DAY 10 :DDDD

I’m always starting to worry when F/SN starts playing this weird and eerie song and I have to go and check being like “did i 100% sure turn off the h-scenes in the settings”, the end of day 9 was a weird block and if anything, I was surprised that it was attempting to fetishisize an interaction that wasn’t that kinky,

like,

but still, I’m aware it’s only getting worse from now on ^^

also, new words on WaniKani, and wow, this one really is tough :sob:

they’re just adding retention for engagement for people that are level 60 and would’ve burnt everything already :sob: xdd

And MaruMori, mmm, rage slowly building up C:

Unfortunately, also I’m currently doing a trial, and I didn’t expect you can run out of a trial, and it seems like I did :eyes:

The lifetime discount can’t come quickly enough ^^

Life

Still feeling pretty meh, so took it slower adventuring today ^^

Has anyone heard of Valentina? This is my favorite hot sauce, and they brought it over to Rewes now :eyes:
It’s insane in terms of umami, everything with it gets devoured immediately because you’re addicted to just wanting more ^^

Also, from a Mexican friend I’ve heard about the black sticker that they attach on products that don’t even have that much salt, because the measure is not per serving, it’s per bottle, and hot sauces apparently take pride in Mexico from having that black sticker on them ^^

More streets renamed in Berlin, this one close to Zoologischer Garten! Still on the roll of giving names of the streets back to people that have been erased a few decades ago :eyes:

And yeah, did you knOW THAT THERE IS AN OFFICIAL BIDOOF LEGO SET NOW???
And they even programmed extra functionality for that Bidoof with a smart brick, aaa :sob:

Not very interested in the Bulbasaur though xddd

And hey, love those walls with markers and all C:

And a banger piece of clothing, give me that lobster, I don’t care about that t-shirt xddd

Oh, and I found a really cool creepypasta based on Deltarune’s weird route on the internet today, FRLG.ips:

I watched the entire longplay of it, and then small videos on the swaps of saves, alternate endings, TVTropes and so on, it was SO GOOD AAAA

There is a new rock by the water.

See you tomorrow! ^^

It’s interesting to see that they now added that “one lesson a day” unlock feature! I don’t think it was a thing when I tried out marumori - which was one of the reasons why I decided not to use them further. I had already studied with Genki & Quartet at that point, so those unlocked trial lessons were only stuff I already knew, so it was hard to judge how helpful/good the explanations would be for grammar I didn’t already know.

I do sometimes wish marumori would offer ‘partial’ subscriptions – I think I would like to use the grammar bits, but I definitely wouldn’t be using the vocab and kanji srs (just too invested on other apps/platforms), and then that high high high price just becomes unjustifiable. (Which is sad! That lil panda is so cute!)

All these Pokemon sets are SOOO cute but sooooo expensive. (Did you see the Arcanine one???)
If I ever win the lottery, I won’t tell anyone, but there will be signs…

I feel like I need to comment on something I saw written on there.

ahem

YES! STOP TOM NOOK HATE!! I don’t know if people are just joking or do people really mean it, but I am so tired of people hating on him. Nook is actually extremely generous about your housing upgrades. The upgrades are finished the very next day, you aren’t charged interest, there’s no time limit for paying off your loans, and after you finish paying off the last upgrade (depending on the game) he will paint the roof and the exterior for free, forever. Now, tell me where in the real world you can get that good of a deal on housing? Nowhere! I really don’t understand why people make him out to be such a villain!
