I’m so impressed you managed an indoor temp of 26 C near the peak of the heat wave? We kept that for a while but the last 2 days of it got up to 28 by the peak and our neighbors 31.
We didn’t open any windows in the evening but rather woke up at 5 or 6am to open everything until about 8am when it got too hot already.
And now… the problem with a well insulated house. The heat wave is over since 2 days and we still have 26 C indoors as soon as we close the windows because the walls just radiate out everything they stored the last 2 weeks.

Also, still in the section for Japanese, but I went to a German sprachcafe today to practice a bit German again, unfortunately, I’m in this place with German already where other people shoosh me and ask me for the meanings of my words and to speak slower, so it’s probably time to mentor other people rather than practice my own instead
But that being said, we’ve had a block today where people were bringing their songs and poems from the cultures they’re familiar with to do a culture exchange with other people, and we’ve had one Farsi, one Turkish, I decided to spice it up, and I brought Japanese today!
So lore drop! Back in 2019-ish or something, I was at a Japanese embassy in Warsaw at a rhetoric competition where people would prepare a short piece of speech to present to Japanese juries and then later have questions asked about it, and my language school I was at back then sent me as one of the participants!
I spoke about a Japanese “poem” that touched me and connected with me on a more spiritual level, and I got to recite it too! Aimer’s 花の唄!
Since back then, I could only do at best, A2 in Japanese, I completely bombed the question section despite prior preparations, but still, all participants got kanji/grammar study books, some snacks and ramen-in-a-cup soups, and it’s a very nice memory to have, I remember I did practice my speech with my mom in a car being driven from Warsaw xddddd
花の唄 is the ending song from the first film of Fate/Stay Night Heaven’s Feel by Ufotable, and now, all those years later, I’m reading the same story as a visual novel. Life rhymes ^^
And yeah, here it is, many years later, I’m surrounded with people in a German sprachcafe and I’m reciting:

I learned today about a music band called Sparks that has been around for decades, and the guys there are ambiguous in terms of sexual and romantic expression, apparently all of the people they’ve inspired are more popular than Sparks by itself, and it’s been so annoying to Edgar Wright that he directed a documentary based on their life - and also they’ve had multiple concerts in Berlin over decades too ^^
It was a really interesting tangent because I’ve known absolutely nothing about them and looking it up, there’s a big rabbit hole to target C:

I’m back to Chinese A1.2 on Monday! But before then, one of the most popular girls’ love dramas in a while comes from Taiwan! It’s called Fragrance of the First Flower and apparently is a cult classic ^^
Today doing Hello Chinese and Lingory alone took me 40 minutes, so damn, other languages also take a ton of time.
And I did finish Extraordinary Attorney Woo! Dong Geu-Ra-Mi is by far the best character of the show and it’s such a joy every time she comes on the screen C:

It’s pretty spook. I can kind of see the way it might be portal inspired. It works well enough but I’m still kind of deciding what I like about it and what my opinion is. I feel like the liminal space part of the backrooms is always at odds with the guy-who-hides-in-the-dark-and-skrungles-around-and-murders-you-in-ways-that-would-look-silly-if-the-camera-got-a-good-look-at-them part of the backrooms. The movie has an idea that does a synthesis of those parts and I don’t hate the second part as much here.
some guys would rather live in the backrooms than meaningfully participate in therapy. Also what I mean by the synthesis is that the skrungle murder guys are all also the memories and self image of the people who get trapped. I think that works well for combining the horrors and appealing to different people who like the backrooms concept for different reasons. Good job movie!

I feel like when I started the Chinese course again, where I look at the characters and I pretend I understand what is being said but I’m like “yees yees good for you” xdd

I was hestitating at first if I wanted to play it in English or Japanese, because I knew it would heavily be inspired by the internet slang and the culture and I might have troubles following it in Japanese, but opted for Japanese eventually…

The good news is that when I tried to change the language to English for one day, I had trouble following the game in English, because of how bizarre it is xddd
But back to Japanese, the protagonist of this game is terminally online and doing VERY NOT WELL (病み度) and it’s our responsibility to try to make her into the best version of herself she can be, whether it’s a super popular streamer, a healthy adult, a person in a relationship, and trust me, it’s very hard xddd
Because it’s a game about a topic of メンヘラ, there is an ending in the game you can arrive on pretty early where アメちゃん recovers and becomes a well functioning human being and i was so happy for her aaaand it’s framed as a bad ending xddd
I found the game interesting as a concept but frustrating as an experience of actually playing it, because, surprise surprise, アメちゃん is very NEEDY and you NEED to provide for her xddd

We had a big picnic in the park today! Around 50 people and yes, I did manage to introduce myself to a few Japanese moms, even though I feel like my vocabulary grew really rusty once again, I need to do more Japanese irl ^^
We had a grill and a lot of people crowdsourced their own food for it C:
And yeah, since I seemingly do well with the kids, Japanese parents left me with some hyperactive kids to play around with and I kept alternating screaming “嬉しい” and “痛い痛い！！！” and “もう帰りましょう” to no avail the whole time xddd
It was pretty fun though C:
I took a decent amount of portraits today and tried developing them as RAWs afterwards and we’ve had a really nice time ^^
And in the evening, I ended up going to the Creepy Crypt through the rain on the bike because they made a late swap for a film they’d be showing today, and instead of showing John Carpenter’s horrors, they ended up showing Nightborn - an advance screening of a horror film that isn’t out yet, and it’s got a lot of SUOMI MAINITTU!!

Recently I’ve been surrounded with Finnish culture and friends and Korean institutes and films, it’s weird xddd
And yeah, I rated it as “good”, it was very gory, very obnoxiously loud and very disgusting, but in a way that still made it entertaining to me ^^
I’m going to two films tomorrow and am way more excited to hang out with friends than to see those movies, spoiler, I’ll be on Backrooms for the third time tomorrow xddd

I guess it’s one of those words like 縁側 or 鴨居 which comes up all the time in anything written about Japanese places with more traditional architecture, or never comes up at all, depending on the material
But make sure to keep it separate from 障子 which I see as often in novels as 襖

Neukölln!
This district of Berlin integrates a lot of immigrants and their culture, and they organized a bunch of art events this weekend under 48 Stunden Neukölln, art galleries, open-air stages, dance and music performances and all C:
And luckily enough the cinema I visited today was in heart of those art performances and presentations!
I’ve already spoiled the surprise yesterday but I saw Backrooms for the THIRD time today, less because I really like the film and more because it’s basically the 2026 version of Barbenheimer where everyone wants to see it and see Obsession at the same time, and since I have an unlimited card, I can get my friends cheaper tickets to see it xddd
But no, it was great, and they were the most neurodivergent friends I bounce off of recently so the after-film conversations involved a lot of theories and interrogations on culture we mutually consume
…aaaand we’ve agreed to watch the amazing digital circus next friday too xddd
And then another group of friends got me over to see another film with them today, really far away from my comfort zone, called The Sheep Detectives. And hey, it was a little better than I was worrying it’d be, yes, it’s a family film that’s really Germany coded despite being British, it had a big budget for a film of its kind and it was cute with how it tried to be your child’s first Knives Out film xddd
In general, today was a lot of yapping, a lot of socializing, and I could say that I can’t wait to get some me-time, but it doesn’t seem to be in the cards for tomorrow xddd
Oh, and speaking of feature films, I listened to the whole 3-hour long video by The Moon Channel on the differences between America’s hard power and Japanese soft power, it later evolves into military interventions, economical meddling with countries, being a police of what they call their free world, very good video, absolutely not inflammatory xddd
But it was released on July 4th, so I thought it’d have merit and it definitely did! C:

hey hey, guess who finished N1 on Bunpro today! And back to finishing the remaining levels too.
As opposed to the N2 study, I have a much weaker opinion about liking/not liking Bunpro for learning at N1 level, mostly because a lot of items just aren’t sticking with me and I prefer to practice for remembering what that grammar meant rather than recalling what should I fit in a missing area.

It’s a lesbian series I found on a weird streaming platform whose name is GagaOOLala, it has a lot of BL and GL series and you can filter by countries, and this one was supposed to be popular and supposed to have taken Japan by storm xddd
It’s a story of a Japanese 会社員 who used to be friends with a Chinese woman, who later outgirlbossed herself, had a husband, made a child, and then started regretting it, and now the Chinese woman kind of wants to ruin her life to be with the Japanese 会社員 but the 会社員 has to go first and embarrass herself, even though the 会社員 is really torn whether this is a good decision in the first place xddd
Watched it without any subs, just with Japanese, because the dialogues had some breaks between them, I still followed on the story, but I’d be lying if I said I understood everything xddd
Pretty toxic, pretty かぐや様は告らせたい, but most importantly, CHINA MENTIONED :DDDD

Fufufu, now we’re really speeding up, as if it wasn’t fast enough the last time already ^^
The A1.2 group has people who have either had classes before or have done apps, which means that there’s less explaining of 汉子 to do and we can focus on the 汉语 part, but one person getting progressively more tired with reading tones as the time went on made me realize that I don’t really remember what was at the beginning of the lesson earlier today, so yes, there is a lot of self-study in the classes as well
Towards the end, as I realized my brain was frying, I started grilling the teacher about breakfast-adjacent vocabulary, because she told us that in China the breakfasts in hotels end at like, 8:30 or maybe 9:00, and I’m a huge fan of breakfasts, so we tried different grammars and words by complaining about Chinese breakfasts xdddd

But on the upside, I was really happy with my German today and was able to speak my mind clearly in classes, so hey, practice pays off!

It does use 汉语, so I was interested how much I’d be able to tell, and surprise surprise, words like 什么 and 名字 come to me automatically now! Same with the 吗 and 吧 particles, and halfway through the first episode, one of the characters wrote 你好吗 and I was immediately like “OMG I KNOW THAT ONE” xddd
In general, even with picking individual words, I don’t remember picking this many words from listening at A1 in Japanese, but this was forever ago, so I’m pretty happy with my listening today, and it’s a pretty cute series too C:

So remember how I mentioned the no-me-time yesterday? I got invited to karaoke by a friend today xdd
It had a pretty fun system, where you pay €5 for the entrance and then you can go to any small booth and scream on top of your lungs with any group, or ask them for a permission to request your own songs, so me and my friend were looking for small booths to have as many of our songs as possible xddd
They definitely doubled on the aesthetic and luckily on the scale of Berlin, they didn’t allow any smoking indoors and had a special punishment area for smokers xdddd
And yeah, got my first Stateside on karaoke, got my first Bangaranga, smashed Bring Me To Life and Cranberries - Linger, Paramore - Decode, Sabrina Carpenter’s Please Please Please, High School Musical 2, K-Pop Demon Hunters, tons of singing today ^^
They had exactly one song in Japanese (guess which one xddd)
…and I kind of decided to make Bôa - Duvet a honorary member of Japanese song collection, even though nobody’s Spotify playlist in our karaoke booth had gotten it in the sad girl 90s playlists yet xdddd

Also, something something, Chinese century, had a Vietnamese Bánh mì today to celebrate the start of the course, delicious and stan Vietnam xddd
And managed to hack my Playstation Vita today because I was bored and damn, the community support for the console is really impressive and there’s a lot of things one can play with ^^

I really should bother to learn the Evangelion song. It’s freaking everywhere.
Carefull with the last screenshot. I think I started it 2 years ago, restarted it at least twice, have 60 hours total in it but still didn’t finish it…
Though to be fair, this time around I’m actually making measureable progress being in day 4 at least.
The strange words without having a hooking setup destroyed me the first two times around.
