I’m gonna devote significantly less effort to this one than Chinese and Japanese, but it’s been a series of fortunate/unfortunate consequences that have led me to FINDING A REMOTE FINNISH KOREAN LANGUAGE CENTER DOING REMOTE CLASSES 200KM AWAY FROM HELSINKI
just five days, starting next Monday ^^

I don’t think you need to be academic paper and video essay fluent in one before moving to another but there could be difficulties doing elementary Chinese and Korean at the same time. The writing systems are pretty distinct but I think there’s a lot of vocab overlap. I don’t really know but I’ve heard that there’s cognates between Chinese and Korean so that could help or hinder. Good luck either way though.

I saw on one of the Letterboxd videos that the director was inspired by Portal 2 the video game, aND YOU CAN DEFINITELY TELL

That’s the most compelling way to sell me on this movie. Portal is hype enough that I know a third game would undermine the point and disappoint me but I’d play the hell out of it if valve ever did make it.

I’ve seen a little of the back rooms analog horror stuff and I think I remember the meme when it was fairly new and simple before people felt the need to expand on it with fake lore and worldbuilding. This movie could be good but I just don’t know how necessary it is. Feels like the commercialization and expansion of a fun idea beyond what it was meant to be. But portal being an inspiration for it with large odd and empty spaces just makes sense in a monkey brain way. I might check it out now that I know that.

So humblebundle has a bundle called Yuri in Luck right now that contains yuri visual novels, and since I don’t know that much about Studio Élan games, or the big studios behind the games, so I decided to just get it!

And Fatal Twelve is a good game in the bundle that tackles a bit more mature topics, doesn’t have much fanservice, is in Japanese and has Japanese voice acting!

And look, the protagonist looks like me, she has my haircut!

She even has my jacket too!

(i’m not doing the red contact lenses, I’m sorry xddd)

I’m doing pretty okay with this VN, I understand like 99% of the words and 95% of the sentences on the first pass reading, but still, the remaining 5% make me go like >:[ and I put it down after an hour ^^

Because F/SN tomorrow will have Yomitan, I’m crossing my fingers I’ll get a bit further there ^^

Oh, and I already did tomorrow’s minimums of SRSes to retain streaks and to have a good performance at the marathon ^^

I also finished the Chinese HSK 1 deck on Anki, still have a lot of New Practical Chinese Reader to go though

Today, the temperature in Berlin jumped out of nowhere, from 26 to 35 degrees within a span of a day. Of course, I’ve been made aware, but still, going out was extremely sweaty and I felt like I was cycling much slower than usual just to get to point B

I got stuck in rooms with air conditioning and was trying to catch up on stuff there, including Chinese study that I did at the local library ^^

And hey, one of the guys who attends the German Sprachcafe found me there and surprise surprise, we’re both fluent at English and we finally got to know things about one another faster xdd

Also, went to Manga Mafia and looked at their mysterious queer mangas that they offer, sometimes they give you the tropes through emojis, sometimes just the flag, pretty cute, although I no longer read manga not in Japanese xddd

I also hired cleaning service to come to my flat and help me with the fact I didn’t know how to unpack from Japan (a month later xddd) and I was forming groups of items on the floor, but didn’t know what to do with them, and my floor ended up being a huge mess. I did an introduction to the cleaner and tried to ask her for some advice and maybe organization of things in my flat, and then I left for the city…

…aaaand she just took and combined the groups of items and made towers of them and stacked the towers right next to the bookshelves in a way where they appear like they belong a little more xddd

Like I don’t know what I expected, but I’m still allowed to be disappointed, right? xddd

Anyway, marathon tomorrow! Looking forward to seeing how much I read, off to catch up on the marathon thread and make my OP, and then off to sleep!

I finished my entry at 14:01:11, my PB yet, and although I did sacrifice a big part of my day for that and I wish I had done a few things in the city or with friends more, hey, it was raining today and the weather wasn’t that great

F/SN between day 1-3 was surprisingly easy, until day 4 in Heaven’s Feel that I randomly stumbled upon by clicking a thing I thought would be a bad ending on day 3, and it wasn’t xddd

And Fatal Twelve is much, MUCH easier to read, but also without Yomitan or Google Translate, there are persistently those words that you don’t get the meaning or the reading of, and they sit there awkwardly, understood through the context, but no idea what they actually mean ^^

In Bite Size Japanese: I heard that Japanese people think way more positively of AI than the western world, and Layla has been challenging haters and telling how she’s learning English efficiently thanks to ChatGPT xddd

Germany won 2:1 today, so I heard people cheering even from my flat when I was marathoning ^^

Anyway, marathon day today, so I had a fancy breakfast! C:

One of my plans for today was to go for my book swap outdoors, but it didn’t end up happening because it was raining today, so there was a small meetup at a Vietnamese place, that ALSO was celebrating the world cup xddd

I said hi to people and set off to a bubble tea place to do the marathon instead ^^

Glad I had some physical activity today at least, I cycled over 10 kilometers and then kept on reading ^^

So yeah, it’s almost four, need to reset my brain after 15.5 hours of Japanese and I’ll have better thoughts about my marathon tomorrow ^^

It’s Midsommar! Summer solstice!

I actually woke up today to my half-conscious vision early in the morning turning pure white in a flat that doesn’t have that many windows, and hearing a thunder IMMEDIATELY follow that, through the closed and insulated windows, and immediately hearing two car alarms as well, through the closed and insulated windows ^^
IT WAS SO SCARY

It’s not the 梅雨 yet, but today was another rainy day ^^

I’ve alluded to this in the past, but World Cup is pretty much the only time where you can see German flags anywhere
Similar to the US flag, the German flag feels to carry a very strong meaning around here, and that meaning is not objectively positive to every group in Berlin, so people tend to be a little careful with manifesting those

Anyway, I was pretty tired after the marathon yesterday, so I didn’t leave my flat far, and today was a day when many Open Doors events were happening around the town ^^

I ended up not going, because I had friends at my place and we just devoured a party pack of sushi together ^^

And because today is the Midsommar, I pulled out the only feature western Blu-Ray I have - Midsommar, and we’ve watched the Director’s Cut, perfect for a day like this ^^

The film sparked off a lot of interesting conversations about horror and toxic and doomed yuri and heterofatalism and put three lesbians in a room and you’ll have a lot of directed angst, so we’ve ended up yaaaaappping about everything until midnight xdddd

And then a transplant battery from my 3DS helped one of them be able to set up all the crazy fictional scenarios in Tomodachi Collection on her 3DS, so wooo!

Anyway, I’m starting a new language course later tomorrow, so going to sleep, see you tomorrow ^^

I did Hello Chinese and Anki today?

After I finished the HSK 1 block, I feel much more… familiar with the language? Like looking at the next lessons on Hello Chinese, it feels like both grammar and sentence structure just fits in the sentences, which I’m pretty happy about…

…which unfortunately I can’t say about language yet xddddddd

The course started off pretty innocent:

But yes, immediately seeing that table of hangul on slide 3, we were asked to immediately become familiar with it, and it escalated really, REALLY QUICKLY

Within just two hours, we were immediately by exercises like this:

Which, to give you transparency, we’re doing the Sejong Institute textbook for 1A level and there is an expectation that we will finish THIS ENTIRE TEXTBOOK in just five days, 15 hours.

That’s 4x faster than the Chinese course.

So, immediately after being humbled at the course today, I tried doing the whole http://letslearnhangul.com, and they claim that it’s easy to learn the whole hangul in an hour, which, yes, maybe, perhaps…

…problem being that Korean has a lot of pronunciation rules that come from phonological assimilation, that @javerend taught me in detail about today

Doing the special phonetics rules took me longer than the whole hangul practice, probably, and I was ranting at how difficult the course is with @catwithcookiesandtea as I kept on bashing and bashing exercises xdd

After the lesson today at Dussman I found the textbook that the presentation was made for…

And we have SEEMINGLY done 39 pages of the textbook in a single lesson in a single day. Day 1 of 5. I’m not bought xdddd

Either way, did a lot of studying Korean today, and definitely not enough, we’ll be asked to introduce ourselves with a job, nationality, name tomorrow and I can barely read the name of the country I’m in xddd

Tomorrow will be fun xddd

Also, my mom is in Berlin, and we watched some Extraordinary Attorney Woo (이상한 변호사 우영우) today, I liked the “OBJECTION” phrase, 이의 있습니다!!!

At least I won’t forget that one ^^

So Korean state for today: I already miss Mandarin, like for real xdd
But good news though, Mandarin is coming back pretty soon for A1.2, and I’m still learning it every day ^^

So to celebrate the new and (hopefully) short lived hobby (xddd), I took my mom to a Korean restaurant today! It’s themed after Seoul and has Korean culture references all over the place ^^

I tried reading some text and practicing hangul when I’m there, but man, I definitely need a little more time xddd

Also, Akashelia didn’t tell me that Denmark makes great soft ice cream, grrr >:[ xdd

Today was the very last day of bearable temperatures in Berlin, and it was pleasant C:

But from the next week on, a marathon starts…
And I have never. Ever. Experienced a temperature above 37 degrees.

I have no idea how to survive this. I don’t have air conditioning at my place. I will be crying. Please help xddd

What the hell?

I think back to the week or so when I was interested in Korean last year and I took a week to do the let’s learn Hangul page as correctly as I could (it says a couple hours but that’s lies to make it more palatable). I’ve forgotten it all but still, a new writing system with new sounds takes time and repetition for getting used to.

I’m all for challenging yourself but a 5 day textbook sounds mental. Maybe if you’ve already learned the basics and are stuck in a rut trying to advance from beginner to intermediate stuff that kind of pace can help, but for a complete from zero introduction that’s just sabotage.

Do the one that’s not crazy paced, come back for Korean Hangul when you get more better at the Chinese. That’s my two cents at least. If one feels way easier and you’re looking forward to it, do that one.

fate scenes

I have mixed opinions on the h scenes, they get made fun of a lot and if the creators were brave enough to defy the way the medium was at the time they might have gotten away with not including them at all. But they did include them and I think it’s more appropriate to include them when reading. I think they matter more to heavens feel than the other routes. Heavens feel also has more of them than the other routes. The toggle is there for a reason so it’s up to you if you want to see those or not but they serve more of a purpose in heavens feel.

People on the internet have been preparing me for the fact that seemingly the demo version of Rhythm Heaven is really hard and that they had to repeat some levels a few times in order to advance, but maybe rhythm games is where I have a bit of an advantage, because I cleared all of the maps on the first try

but i pride myself on being able to count to 4, 5 and 7, i’m so good at this entire math thingy

Also, this part of the Heaven’s Feel browser engine has a weird bug where Sakura’s sprite doesn’t disappear from the screen at one section and I was like “well it’s heaven’s feel those things happen here”, but now I’m not exactly sure xddd

Chinese Korean corner

I did my Chinese Anki, a few lessons on Hello Chinese and I still keep at it xddd

Today’s lessons in Korean were a bit less intense than yesterday’s, though the pace was still pretty off

I could’ve sworn we were thrown like 300 nouns at us today alone, and I was being made fun (in a playful way xdd) of for not remembering the word for teacher and student, wHICH ARE ONLY 2 OUT OF 198 WORDS I DIDN’T REMEMBER FROM THE 300 WORDS YESTERDAY XDDD

But we did numbers, and I was carried really strongly both through the fact Korean numbers are similar to Japanese and that I know how numericals work ^^

Our classes are down to only two people from three yesterday, me and a Filipino person (xddd), and with our Korean teacher and his Hungarian assistant who was helping us out doing pair work with us, we form the best Finnish team in Tampere the world has ever seen ^^

And more Extraordinary Attorney Woo with my mom before sleep tonight, and a bit of grinding Korean on my tablet again, and I’ve started doing Ligory, I probably can’t keep up learning as much and many languages as much as I do right now, because, yyy, LIFE, but for now I’ll carry a bit more ^^

Final walks around Berlin with still a bearable temperature ^^

Speaking of languages, and Berlin being a gold mine for them, reperations for World War II make it so that there are just randomly street signs like this in the city, and because there are so many of those, somehow I never noticed until today xddd

But yeah, I made up for Saturday and met up with a friend of mine at She Said, a feminist bookstore for a proper bookswap, and a bookswap it was, people were bringing really high quality and effort books, including this HAND-HIGHLIGHTED COPY OF SHE GETS THE GIRL WITH SPICY SECTIONS LABELED xddd

The meeting today was a bit crowded, but when people were parting their ways with books, it wasn’t just one or two as on a regular book swap, it was LIKE A TEN

Even my mom managed to land one! C:

Chinese Just any language corner

…I had another classes in Korean today and I went to a Sprachcafe for German as well

It’s always a great conversation starter in German when you go like “ah yeah, I’m also learning Korean right now and did some Chinese less than a month ago”, and I feel really cool being able to finally have some time to express my mind in German!

I continue to do Hello Chinese, Chinese Anki (took me 25 minutes today), I started doing Lingory for Korean and I’m really finding it hard to find time for languages, and Extraordinary Attorney Woo’s third episode today, but I’m still having a lot of fun!

The difficulty level keeps on spiking and being harder than I can keep up with:

But on the more uplifting news, we’re slowly getting to the section where my knowledge of Japanese is paying off and both the grammar and expressions we learn are really reminiscent to Japanese, which makes the workload just a tiny bit easier

Still, reading hangul remains the most difficult challenge for me, easily followed by the fact I often mix up one syllable to make a word sound more Japanese, like 선생님 - teacher, in my head it’s always せんせいよ for some reason and I’m having it hard to get it out of my head xdd

I will probably never get 가방 wrong, because カバン is just helping me too much ^^

…but man. Prioritization is a nightmare.

So in addition to a good few hours of language study today, Deltarune Ch5 came out today!

And I’m extremely excited for it… and because of languages, I’ve only played half an hour of it, got the fountain created and then it was time to do something else

I really hope that with the heat tomorrow, I’ll be able to sit in and FINALLY CONSUME CHAPTER 5 PROPERLY

(anyway, the festival events in Chapter 5 were INCREDIBLE. C:)

Me and my mom are trying to fight the heat with ice cream and kumpirs, and while it was still possible today, will only get worse from now ^^

It’s so hot that the concrete is just radiating hot, at barely 32 ^^

And the Sprachcafe didn’t have good AC today either, so I was sweating there too

We ended up going some swimming and it was a great relief C:

I still have problem reading Hangul, maybe studying not strictly enough. But it’s -Nim.

I can’t blame you for messing Japanese reading and Korean reading, though. (tho this word is repeated far early and long enough for me to remember.) _{It’s also sometimes somewhat similar to Thai, loan words through Teochew I believe.}

Not Chinese? corner?

I blame it all on Korean xdd

When we were shown a clip of -ます form in Korean today, it was presented in a way where I was convinced it was a joke, because there were so many exceptions and so many rules of how to form the present tense form in Korean ^^

The tl;dr is that there are three groups, 아요, 어요 and 해요, and even out of them, there are exceptions like 마시다 to 마셔요, and sometimes, letters get smashed together creating new forms, like 배우다 to 배워요

On a bit of an uplifting note, it does feel understandable from the perspective of う, る verbs and する/くる, so it wasn’t the end of the world, but seeing the polite forms being created in real time has been an Adventure when you only get five classes in a module xdd

But it’s so bizarre to think that tomorrow is the final class of this module, and that there isn’t A1.2 anywhere xddd

And a new anime store in Manifesto! But man, what’s the deal with that writing style for the logo? Right-to-left and top-to-bottom on a 2x2 grid? Man, what the heck xddd

And once it started becoming livable at 31 at 8pm, we went for a walk just to find out what Potsdamer Platz had a HUUUUGE fan area, where the line would loop around the whole Platz just to let people in

It Definitely Is A Chinese corner

Finished the Korean classes today! It was an interesting block, and definitely too condensed xddd

But I feel like I learned how to learn Korean (with just hangul, by prioritizing vocab, as grammar is mostly similar to Japanese), so I might keep it for a little longer

I found an Anki deck for the textbook we were using:

and it’s high effort, it has all of the words with readings for all of the early levels, I might look at it ^^

I was wrong about finishing the textbook:

We only did five lessons out of 10 from it, though the first one already required for us to be proficient with hangul, which was the biggest difficulty spike. I did some self-study though, and now even when I was walking around Berlin and finding Korean texts I was trying to read them, so hey, worth it ^^

And Chinese returns in a week and a half on Monday ^^

it was hot, hot, hot, unbelievably hot, and yet it was the coldest day of the week remaining xddd

Out of concern for the people in Berlin, this weekend’s Berlin’s Book Festival that I wanted to take my mom to, got cancelled:

…but it wasn’t all doomed, because another book festival, for more artistic books, Miss Read, that was happening in the underground, did take place ^^

And let me tell you, it was super cool! Both in terms of air conditioning and the selections ^^

They had a decent few exhibitors from China, Korea and Japan, which are some of the recent languages I care about, so, hey ^^

And since all of them were indie-ish, I managed to talk to the actual authors, ask them about their works and get some text in native languages to read, which isn’t easy in Berlin ^^

I read half of the zine about asexuality and it is a bit academic, but nice to be reminded of things regardless ^^

And on the topic of heat, I finally found my favorite Japanese milk tea in a Asian convenience store in East Side Mall!

And yep, a 4x markup applies to drink prices as well, though at this point it’s not just about convenience, it’s about it even existing ^^

…but man. on the topic of temperature.

…i opened a window overnight.

…i messed up. i warmed the flat and now I’m BEGGING for it to cool down, because i will be physically unable to bring the temperature down for the next 48 hours at least.

I’m scared and I’m wondering if I should go to sleep or wait for the temperature to go down even a tiny bit to try to make it feel livable for the next 2 days under a strict window lockdown.

i don’t do well with sleeping at 26 degrees, so send help, if anyone has any xdddd

I was kinda pitying you until I saw the number… 26°C is still fresh. I have the lowest of the day at 27.5°C (it’s 8AM30) and reaching 33°C inside during the day. Now I’m just jealous of the temp you have XD

It’s always sad when you have an Expert 2 grammar and then you don’t pass it on Bunpro, so here’s my sentence of shame I’ll be beating myself up over not remembering right now, 飽くまでも, I thought it was such an easy grammar when I was learning it ^^

The hottest day of my life - so far! C:

Having temperatures this high just robs you of an ability to think clearly, do many productive things or even sleep well, so today has been a day of me zooming in and out ^^

Me and my mom took a train outside of Berlin that hasn’t been air conditioned at all, and we were dripping sweat the whole time in there ^^

look how nicely the sweat formed on the phone’s camera xdddd

But we went to Brand Tropical Islands today - it’s an artificial water resort that has a small tropical forest and simulates the whole environment of an island when you get there!

Might sound like a weird thing, but the air conditioning wasn’t keeping up

over a tropical island xddd

It looks a little dystopian, but if you squint just enough not to see the dome, it really has all of the amenities of a tropical environment in there, nice music, people enjoying themselves, it really sells a fantasy ^^

You can buy Spongebob magnets or fly a balloon over the dome, and a LOOOT of slides down ^^

There was an outdoors area with a lot of pools too, but the surfing activity was cancelled because of the temperatures ^^

As the day kept going, I was getting more and more bought on the idea of swimming and using water to beat the heat and since the AC inside was getting stronger and stronger, I actually started enjoying it??? xddd

Oh, and they had a pretty big indoors rainforest in there, with actual plants from the rainforests of South America and some animals as well ^^

We left at like 7pm, after the temperature started getting a tiny bit down, but the air was unbearably hot all the way through anyway

One more day and night and the temperature should start getting down ^^

Also, I didn’t know Berlin was hosting Women’s Basketball World Cup this year, this is pretty cool, I’ll look into it ^^

I read some Everlove by Tanya Byrne, since I wanted to test how good my German is right now and the pride month is running out, and it went pretty quickly? As said before, I read 100 pages in 60 minutes, so I can only dream of that reading speed in Japanese (yet alone Chinese or Korean) xdd

Either way, I enjoyed how much it referenced the culture of the protagonist and the UK as a backdrop, so that was sweet C:

…the ten books in Japanese and ten books in German goal for the year is still active? 4 books in Japanese and 0 books in German so far.

(My mom took her laptop to the Silent Reading Hour and then participated in conversations in English afterwards, I’m so proud of her trying!! C:
It was her first time in a casual book-centric environment in English ever, and she had her own time window to talk about Ken Follett too ^^)

Anyway, then we went out of the building into 38 degrees and…

…zero respite.

If at any point I left any impression of me enjoying the temperatures this high, I’M NOT

Public transit was a bit of a hit or a miss, the trains that have been going for a while have been really decently air conditioned, the ones that just started their lines not so much sadly

But, around 7pm the wind started blowing, and even though it was still 35… it felt much more bearable?

And when around the sunset we dropped below 30 degrees, I was SO HAPPY

Actually, a quick update today, I didn’t do the Chinese Anki decks today and I probably won’t attempt to, I’m still keeping the apps for Chinese and Korean though ^^

And two episodes of Woo today!

And my mom left back for Poland today! It was a fun adventure to force her to endure the heatwave in Berlin, but spoiler, now there’s a heatwave in Poland as well, for two more days xddd

The temperatures went back to perfectly normal 26 today and a lot of trains were still delayed, in part because of the rail system not keeping up after all the temperature damages…

…like this one ^^

A lot of places were still really hot today, between bakeries, train stations, underground stations…

I got my bike fixed and paid not that much money for it, I got a good specialist that only wanted to have money for parts and he did all the remaining things, even the things that would require some skilled labor ^^

And yes, not very productive day today, but those happen too ^^
