When can I read [X]? - WaniKani Level Checker

I made a simple tool for checking passages of text for the kanji they contain and telling you what WK level you’ll be able to read it. You can download it at this link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7v73rx7txv17t6d/WaniKani%20Level%20Checker.xlsx?dl=0

(You have to download it in order to use it. The online preview looks messed up and doesn’t work.)

It’s very simple. Paste text into the box and look at the stats on the right.

A couple notes:
- It ignores kanji that are not taught by WK. These are not included in the total or the level percentages.
- It only handles 512 characters per line. If you have really long text that all pastes on a single line, you might have to break it up. But usually that’s not an issue. (Edit: 256-character version for people who can’t open the 512 one: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9gu6whvlrgrys07/WaniKani%20Level%20Checker%20Lite.xlsx?dl=0)

Enjoy!

Wonderful, thank you.

Sweet, thanks!

Great! Thanks a lot!

I’ll have to try it next time I switch partitions, but I’m already scheming up things to put in it.

Wow, this is actually incredibly useful. Thanks for making this!

What a awesome tool! I hope you get all the gratitude you deserve and that you may continue to find the generosity in improving upon this!!!

ありがとうございます!!

I opened the xlsx with LibreOffice, Mac OS X 10.10.5, but I don’t see the stats on the right.

Instead, I get a grid of numbers, probably showing when each word will be learned.

I also searched the spreadsheet for the word “Known”, and didn’t find it. I’m not sure if the xlsx that is at that dropbox location is the same as the one in your screenshot.

 Hi rodent,

The spreadsheet consists of ~1030 columns, most of which are normally hidden in Microsoft Excel. The statistics are shown at the far right of the sheet in columns 1024+. It sound like you're seeing some of the hidden columns erroneously, and maybe not seeing the output columns at all, possibly because of how many columns your spreadsheet application is able to display.

The tool definitely works in Office, but it seems like other platforms have some problems with it, seemingly on account of needing to use so many columns. For instance, Google Sheets wouldn't load the 512-row version I made. But it works fine with this 256-character version I made: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9gu6whvlrgrys07/WaniKani%20Level%20Checker%20Lite.xlsx?dl=0

Try using that one instead and let me know if LibreOffice accepts it. Otherwise I'll try modifying it in other ways to make it more compatible.

LibreOffice does accept the lite version. For the full spreadsheet, when I first downloaded it, I only saw one column, the column that was supposed to contain the Japanese text. So I autofit the columns and saw the columns that you had hidden. I still didn’t see the statistics columns though. The lite version seems to work.

Question though: I notice a black border in column A. Is that the place where the Japanese text has to be confined to? I tried pasting some text outside the black border, and got divide by 0 errors in the statistics columns. I have a subtitle file of an anime episode, and was trying to take the entire text of the episode and paste it into column A. Each line of dialogue should be less than 256 characters, but it appears that there is a vertical limit to how many lines the spreadsheet will detect also.

Div/0 errors occur when there are no WK kanji in the space outlined by the black box, A2:A42. And yes, the black box around this area determines the space where text is analyzed. If you're dealing with a fairly long block of text, it's usually not too difficult to reformat it to a single column without more than 512 characters per line. But if you're trying to do the script for an entire show or something, I can see how it might exceed that space. If you can't figure out how to analyze the passage you're interested in, let me know how many lines you need and I'll modify the sheet to handle text of that length.

This is pretty neat. It got me interested and I decided to do the same in JavaScript:

It’s a quick hack so don’t expect too much from it. I’m not overly familiar with JS myself. All you have to do is copy+paste the code below, launch the JavaScript console on your browser (press F12), then paste it into the box and press enter. Of course, that’s only if you trust what I just pasted and that it’s not going to steal your first-born baby or something.

I might throw the JS onto a website somewhere later. Maybe.

One small qualm with the spreadsheet: why does Excel consider the Katakana long vowel marker ー to be a level 2 kanji (々)?

This is a sample way you could get rid of the 1000 columns: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2VWHgronI3lR2JlOVkzeWhJY00/view?usp=sharing
This seems to make the spreadsheet a bit slower, though, and I don’t know if this would impact a lower-end machine

Whoa, this looks very useful.
Thank you very much, you awesome people!

I gave this a quick go before i left for work and it looks really good!

Bread, since you mention the volume of columns used, is this all done with formulas or have you used some VBA in there?

I could maybe add in some VBA to make it a bit more flexible but then it probably wouldn’t work in applications other than excel.
