[Userscript] WaniKani Super Burn Happy Script - Celebrate your burns!

Hi everyone! I’ve been burning a few items lately and half of the time I don’t even realize I’ve burnt something in the moment. That’s why I made this userscript, because each burn is a reason to celebrate!

http://toemat.com/wanikani/wanikani.sbhs.user.js (Updated to 1.4 / Mar 19 2024)

Here’s a video of it in action: http://youtu.be/PzYcDWJWLhY

When you burn an item during a review you’ll be cheered on and celebrated with confetti!

Let me know what you think!

Edit: added video link

Edit (Jan 2015): Updated to fix some issues like only getting a single sad confetti! Also VOLUME parameter added (you’ll have to edit the script)

Edit (Jul 2023): Updated to work again at last!

Edit (Mar 2024): Fixed to work with today’s update.

Heh, cool idea! Could you post a screenshot of what it looks like please?

Well it should maybe be a surprise (and the screenshot doesn’t do it justice) but here’s what it looks like if you’d like: http://i.imgur.com/Prenshz.jpg

The confetti is neatly animated and a celebratory audio clip I designed goes along with it.

I think it looks good on the screenshot!
I'll try it on my next reviews. :p

Disappointed this isn’t in by default.

[snip don’t know how to user script]

Thanks!

It’s not a full on browser extension so you’ll have to have a userscript extension installed to use this script.

Chrome users: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tampermonkey/dhdgffkkebhmkfjojejmpbldmpobfkfo?hl=en
Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/

Once you have that when you go to http://toemat.com/wanikani/wanikani.sbhs.user.js you’ll get an install button and you should be good to go!

Installed, thanks. I do agree that this is kind of something that should’ve been there by default.

I’ve still got a ways to go before I see this in action, though. lol

Bahaha, this is too naff to not install. Cheers toemat!

awesome!!

Haha, I love that you used ‘dead body’ for the video, that with the dry read is hilarious.

Edit: Just burned and worked great! Thanks!

Haha I wish that was planned. It just happened to be the first burn while I had the screen capture rolling.

> Enter the reading for 上
> Almost have a heart-attack from that horn sound

But nice work.

The greatest script known to man

Hmmm.  I can’t get it to install properly.  :(

I love this script!
It’s been a very long day for me, and I was considering skipping my Japanese practice altogether.  Something made me at least begin to attempt it, despite having over 100 reviews piled up.   Imagine my surprise when, a few items in, I correctly answered an old radical and was greeted with horns, confetti, and a cheering crowd!  Yes, I had burned my first item!
Although I had a lot of items to review, and I was so very tired, the cheering crowd and cheery confetti kept me going, and I finished them all in one sitting, burning 23 radicals in the process!
Thanks for making a great script to mark these milestones, which could SO easily have slipped entirely past my tired brain’s attention otherwise.

Thank you so much for writing this script!  I had begun to burn items the past couple of days, but I only noticed it once, maybe, while skimming down my ever-large review queue.  The confetti and applause really brightened my day and made me feel that I had just won a small victory over the Crabigator.  Keep up the good work!

I feel sad when I burn an item. It is like saying goodbye to an old friend that I won’t see again.

Could you add an option where the burned item gets all tearful and gives me a hug as it leaves.

I don’t know if you still plan on updating this, but if so, I’d like to request an option to turn down the volume. It’s significantly louder than anything else, which makes it hard to listen to the pronunciations and also experience the celebration.

Haha this is awesome! Btw…
1) What’s the other script you’re using to have the kanji read out when you answer?
2) Would this script work with safari??
