I’m confused by this comment - isn’t she appreciating the oven (in America) precisely because of the lack of ovens in many Japanese kitchens?

Oh yeah, I’m just saying it’s funny that within days of each other I went from hearing CDawgVA complaining about the lack of ovens in Japanese apartments to Utaco being appreciative of having an oven in her American home. Makes me think someone should start promoting them more in Japan :stuck_out_tongue:

In the meantime, maybe look at the timestamps posts and listen to the easier sections of some of the more recent podcasts, maybe that is more motivating to stay with the club (on some sections) even if you still want to listen to all of the earlier episodes in full.

Oh I’ve been brutal to myself and trying to get through every single section of every episode lol

Won’t do a big summary except to say that I really enjoyed her grumbling about the uselessness of pencils with the eraser on the end & how she resents people borrowing her preciously guarded Japanese-made stationery. Is she being a けちん坊?

Also, agreed with her assessment that her Japanese has become mixed up with English and there are times for her when she can’t immediately think of the Japanese expression - talking to the visiting cousin she unthinkingly uses the English word “comfortable” in regards to the bed only to have the cousin go “huh?”I noticed in an earlier episode she stumbled over 和風, saying initially 日本風 before correcting herself. I guess that’s inevitable when you’re living between two languages.

She uses 「子」when she’s talking about the cousin & according to YUYU in his most recent podcast #337 [17:20~] this kind of 呼び方 indicates affection & that the speaker is older (or in certain cases, the same age) as the person they’re speaking about

Wonder how she’s experiencing the wildfires. Know she’s probably not in the area, but it must be concerning

Listened to this again a few days ago, but don’t really have anything significant that I want to add to the short summary I made last year as part of a listening challenge.

summary of #10

In this episode she talks mainly about a recent trip with her husband to San Diego to stay with friends - a couple, Matt and Harry. Her husband met Matt at university and they’ve all since become close friends. She feels comfortable speaking English with them and even if she can’t always participate in all the conversations, enjoys listening, finding their conversation broad & educative. On the way there, they stop in L.A.and catch up with one of her friends who she met originally at an ESL class. At both places, they meet and interact with the relatives of their friends and she comments that this socialising with friends’ families is less common in Japan.
Later in the episode, she talks about her ongoing difficulty with remembering people’s names - if the names are short & simple, she has less of a problem, but America being a multicultural country means that often she’s never heard the name before & doesn’t know how to write it. Have to say, I have the same problem less common Japanese names….

I am very behind on this, mostly due with me getting ill but also being a perfectionist when listening. I want to use it as N2 listening practice. I intend to get going again this week.

I’m very sorry to hear that you are ill!
I hope it’s nothing serious.

That’s a problem I have with reading (wanting to understand what I’m looking at, feeling compelled to look up every unknown word, ugh), but somehow not with listening.

I am very happy to do masses of extensive listening, lazily letting the sounds wash over me and enjoying the magic of increasing comprehension as patterns of meaning gradually emerge and reel me in. It feels practically effortless.

Reading is another story. Tolerance of ambiguity becomes impossible when I’m trying to read a book.

@Cathm2 I am in awe of your progress in reading over the past 5 years!

Thank you very much! I feel I could have made more progress than I did, but that’s life. My reading has progressed faster than other areas, which I’m now trying to address!

I just had flu A, so nothing too bad, but it knocked me for a few days. Unfortunately that came off the back of a cold over Xmas, and a mystery illness that was probably mild pneumonia in November! I’m better now but work is slightly busy.
